I played Kizer this weekend while in Austin and it was a 5.75 hour round and the conditions are not good. Just a heads up

yikes!

hopefully i'll be able to play Jimmy Clay this Sunday. depending on how out of hand the festivities get on Saturday night, i may not wake up early enough (or eager enough) to play.

so we played Clay sunday morning after only 3hrs of sleep. nice course, nice layout. have to re-think your shots at times and the greens were fast as hell. really nice course for a muni. played with a couple of guys who used to work there so that helped.

Played Jimmy Clay today. Interesting layout but a little too much hard-pan. For $31 including cart, can't complain. We booked a 12:12 tomorrow at Plum Creek if anyone is up for being our 4th. Thinking of either ShadowGlen or Bluebonnet for Sunday. Our fllight is at 7, so we're thinking of teeing off around 11 or so. I'll post here when I book it. The pro at Jimmy Clay was iffy on ShadowGlen, so I'm leaning to Bluebonnet. Both look to be wide open as of now.

Thoughts?

Let me add. The whole Kizer-Clay complex is great. You don't know how lucky you are to have facilities like this at muni rates. And cute cart girls too.

I think the Kizer Clay complex is amazing too, it's just too bad they don't keep the courses themselves in good shape. I really like the different styles of the courses, the variety, but three times (2 clay, 1 kizer) I found the conditions to be not worth $35

I wish you'd posted that earlier. We hated, hated, hated Shadow Glen. Too many tricked up holes, blind shots, fairways that ran off into hazards. Really a pain in the neck for guys with no course knowledge. Plus, the maintenance wasn't at the level of the other courses we played (and I'm including Jimmy Clay in this). Shabby tee boxes covered with broken tees, unraked and unmaintained bunkers, greens with 10 or more poorly repaired hole locations. Not to mention the paper printout scorecards.

But all-in-all we had a great trip. You Austin guys are lucky to have so many great courses around that are good deals too.

The whole Austin/San Antonio corridor is rife with excellent courses in excellent shape at excellent prices that when I venture out to other ares I am always somewhat disappointed at the condition/price ratio. We are definitely spoiled in CTX/SATX.

yeah, unfortunately you gotta play it several times before you figure it out...i don't play it often because of the tricked up holes...course design is an art, not the construction of a torture test, lol...

and i DID mentionn bluebonnet, lol...

Anyone have recommendations for a good practice facility in the Buda/Kyle area?

I had this exact question because I spend a lot of time in that exact suburb and the answer I got was there is nothing except private clubs.

So I take it you can't use the range at plum creek unless you're a member?

Plum is open to the public. It's managed by Foresight, the same company that has the Bandit and the Republic. They have a excellent short game area and range. Call them to verify before you go but I can't imagine that it'd be a problem.

I was told by the pro shop that the official policy is the practice tee and green was for paying golfers of the day. It's literally an unenforceable rule and Plum is where I go to roll putts and hit chips when bored in Buda but being told that's the official rule always makes me a little uncomfortable when I'm there haha

Another gem in the area that you need to try out if you haven't done so already - Lakecliff Country Club in Spicewood

Groupon has a deal "18-Hole Round of Golf with Cart and Range Ball for Two or Four at Lakecliff Country Club " for $

This course has bentgrass greens and a very nice layout..

Played here 4-5 times and loved it every time. Arnold Palrmer design..

https://www.groupon....ff-country-club

Use TAKE25 to get 25% off.. only valid till 3/10

Someone buy the 4some and we can have a WRX outing...

Yup. 3+ inches...

Was planning to play yesterday and had an afternoon tee time at Star Ranch.. course was closed due to the rain and flooding. Most courses in the area were closed I believe.. the rain should be good for the course.. so no complaints.. but sad that I won't have any more 300 yard drives (no more hard-pan fairways..)

headed to Bastrop to visit the in-laws this weekend. Hoping to get a round in Saturday or Sunday at one of the local courses....any word on if they will be open or not? I know many parts up in the area have gotten 5+ inches of rain with more possible coming today and tomm...
