MoWilly - I heard December from a buddy of mine that works there and I don't think Lions is scheduled to close until 2019.

I'd love to meet up with some of you guys to play, but I'm a hacker and by what's been posted in this thread, most are scratch players and want to avoid playing with guys like me, oh well...

anyone know when MoWilly will reopen? I read that the club house will only get done early next year, but I was hoping that the course would open earlier.

you probably need to specify your preference, North or South Austin?

check out GolfNow, you can find some pretty decent courses at good prices. I live in SW Austin and like Grey Rock, but I would recommend Crystal Falls in Cedar Park.

I wouldn't recommend Crystal Falls to my worst enemy. It's the only course I've ever played where I hit a tee shot so well that I began to pick up my tee and walk to my cart only to watch the ball split the fairway and end up in the trees. It's been a while since I played the course (10 years at least), but a friend recently played it and had a similar outcome.

Best semi-private choices in Austin area are Falconhead, Avery Ranch or Wolf Dancer. Second tier...and not by much.....would be Teravista, Star Ranch or Grey Rock.

On any given day, these six have the best course conditions and pace of play. First three are just slighly better layouts, in my opinion.

I will second that. I live 2 minutes from Falconhead so I definitely have a bias, but I think it is hands down the best public course in the Austin area. Avery Ranch is another solid course and pretty tough if you play the gold tees (haven't even tried playing tips there). If you stick to the list he gave, you will have a good time on a solid course. They are usually all in great shape.

Avery Ranch is not semi-private. It's very much a public course and last I heard is for sale. I have trouble with this course. Teravista and Star Ranch are two of the easier courses, IMO. I don't remember Grey Rock's layout very well. Last I played there was when it was called Circle C and it was relatively new, mid to late 90's.

thanks fellas - i think falconhead might be the spot.
[/quote]

If you play on your birthday week, you only have to pay cart fee (falcon head, crystal falls, forest creek and shadow glen).

Last I heard, shadow glen was in bad shape as they were closed for a while (since they city cut off their water supply).

I like crystal falls. It is challenging, but you need to have some course knowledge to shoot a good score.

Is 11 the par 4 where the green is uphill and there is that bunker of death below? That is a tough hole.. you need to hit 2 really good shots to have a chance for birdie.

Yep...that be the one. And you forgot to mention usually into a 1 to 2 club wind.

Bunker of death is right....and in my experience, second in deepness only to the bunker surrounding that Par 5 at PGA West Stadium course. They provide stairs to get in/out of that one.

Are you talking about the greenside bunker on 11 to the left of the green? The one that is about 15 feet below the green? Yea I was in it this past weekend. Fluffed a perfect bunker shot to a gimme haha

Playing Forest Creek in the AM and White Wing on Thursday for my fiancés first ever round of golf. She's been practicing here and there and yesterday had a good range session, so she should be rewarded. 10 seconds after letting her know via text that I made the tee time she responded "I'm nervous".....LOL!

Austin golf is at its best right now. The last 2 years have been tough on us with the heat but the rain the past 4 weeks has been well received.

I thought wolf dancer was in as good a shape as I have seen it.

Forest Creek is in great shape overall, but started off drenched this morning. It was matts only on the range, so I got an unwelcome surprise when I took my first swing. It'd be nice if they didn't leave the matts out when watering. The fringe around the practice green and short game area was also really soggy. If I knew it was going to be this wet, I wouldn't have worn the shoes I wore. Greens were a little firm, but they held the ball well.

Today was my first round with the new AP2's. I was very pleased!

Yeah I played Falconhead this past weekend and it was soaked as well. I think a lot of courses overseeded recently and are just soaking the greens. I had one ball dig completely into the ground in front of the green because the ground was so wet. Ridiculous!

Nice. I'd recommend Harvey penick (51st and 183N) if she is starting off. This is where I started playing, and there is ample opportunity to practice and it is not intimidating or very crowded. Good practice facilities as well.
