oOOo lawdy. that back nine is going to be hott! really liked the quarry when i went some years back. the front nine was pretty boring but the back nine made up for it. i really liked the republic in SA also. played with a group in a buddies bachelor party so didn't get to play my score but was a nice looking course i thought.

you may want to try Olympia Hills and your way back. It a nice course and lots of elevation changes and great views. easy on the pocket if you can find a good deal.

Anyone play Landa Park Golf Course in New Braunfels? The greens were fantastic.. better than any country club I've played in Austin. Rest of the course was in great shape as well.. and interesting layout with water and bunkers that can make it challenging on bad misses.

Did I mention their fantastic greens?? It was 10/10.. not a bad spot on any of the 18 greens.. In the 50+ different of courses that I've played their greens would rank as #1 (at their current conditions)

Played there and it's in amazing shape as you say. It's fantastic since the reno my coworkers say.

Yep, heard they did a renovation 3 years ago. Wish some of the ATX course green keepers can go there and get some tips..

Yeah man, outside of Falconhead I don't think I have yet to play an Austin course I would consider "in great shape", a ton are in good shape for sure. After the spring rains every course here in SA just went into amazing shape, including the low-level city courses. It's definitely a mystery to me why the courses aren't in better shape up there when I go play.

If you're playing city courses I can see them as less desirable because they are on strict watering guidelines. Avery Ranch and Teravista are in better than good shape. If you want spectacular conditions, check out Cimarron Hills. It's private, but it's by far the nicest course as far as conditions that I've ever played in Texas.

Let me just forewarn you about Top Golf. Top Golf is fun to hang out and drink with friends while playing a giant arcade golf game, but the price adds up quickly. You can play a round of golf for the same price and probably even save a few bucks. I guess everyone has to go at least once though to determine if they'd enjoy it, but I don't ever recommend an avid golfer go there if they're visiting Austin and looking for something to do.

Topgolf replaced all their authentic Callaway balls with some Topgolf knock off balls that aren't anywhere near a real Surlyn ball. It's hard plastic. They're literally worse than range rocks now. It's why I cancelled my sub to TG. When they were Surlyn Callaway balls it was actually a legitimately good range and practice.

I can't even hit my 6i 160yards with the new balls when I normally hit my 6i 185-190. Seriously their new balls suck so much. I'm bitter.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. I too was shocked to see the results of my 6i smash going a whopping 145yds.

well, that settled that! maybe sneak in 9 somewhere....wednesday we have a dinner mtg, so i'll be looking fwd to thu....i can handle the heat...just requires a lot of water to stay hydrated (lived in phoenix 25 yrs, and play here 100+ rounds a yr, many in the heat of summer...maybe half of those 100+...)

guess where i'm playing today just before noon? go ahead...guess! lol

yeah i agree on top golf. it was cool being both times were with a bachelor party group and some girls we met. their clubs suck as do the cheap grips and we were hitting rocks. to the avid golfer like most of the people on this board, it's not that fun to hit. for a friday or saturday night get together, it's decent but expensive. i'd rather take my clubs to a lighted range and buy my $3 miller lites to work on my game.

What's the best condition public access course in Austin that I can walk with my push cart? Looking to play Saturday but I ain't feeling a motor cart this weekend, I wanna hoof it.

I enjoy walking on Lions.. but I like to play early or twilight.. else you are looking at 4.5-5+ hour rounds.. Not sure about the shape thou.

Also, not sure if you are aware that the green fee on Austin city courses (clay/kizer/lions/mowilly etc) are valid for all day. So you can plan in the morning and walk on again in the evening with the same receipt. Or pay for a cart and ride in the evening..

That answer would probably be Star Ranch.

I braved Blackhawk last week....and that course has really turned the corner. It still has some rough spots in fairways...but tee boxes and greens are solid. If you haven't played it in awhile...you should check it out.

Shadowglen also is on the upswing. It will always have those goofy holes (3, 7, 13)...but conditions are really good right now. They actually added a lake at the bend in 18 to toughen up that easy Par 5.

Speaking of Lions, I heard that they have filed paperwork in attempt to make it a historical landmark, meaning it will be very difficult for UT to sell the property to the highest bidder for condos.

Used to play @twilight there quite a bit, since it was close to work. i like their layout.. and if they have grass on the fairways its a fun course to play.
