New to Austin, looking for people to play with on weekends. Float from 0-5. If anyone wants to play shoot me a PM!

Not sure what part of Austin you live in but we usually have room for a 4th during our rounds.. We typically play Grey Rock or Falconhead the most, but definitely branch out and find the good deals around town on GN. PM me your number - happy to extend an invite the next time we play.

We're definitely not 0-5 indexes but we wouldn't mind playing with one :)

Played Grey Rock yesterday and apparently they "paint" their greens or they'd just fertilized them or something?

Is that a common thing in the winter around here? I've not experienced it before and didn't really cop on until seeing the bits of green coating on the ball.

More and more courses down here now do not overseed. They use a paint and/or fertilizer to cover the greens thru the dormant season. It is really better than the 2-4 weeks of soft/wet conditions in Oct/Nov to get rye to start growing and the patchiness in the spring when that same rye dies and the native grasses can start growing.

Played ShadowGlen today - first time since July. It is in great shape, they have really improved the fairways over last year. (I was a member and played everyday last year.) The grass in the fairways is setting the ball up very nicely - makes hitting good shots much easier and more fun. Also, along the sides of many of the fairways they have let the wispy grass go natural and it really looks good.

Greens were very nice, fast and smooth. A small issue on #9 where there was some mold (I understand) - they took out a couple of trees to improve sun and circulation and it is catching up with the other greens.

I have to say it seems they are doing an excellent job - I see it getting better every year. It is a tough course but if you can control where you hit the ball then it is a very playable course. If not - then bring plenty of balls with you. It may very well be the best bang for the buck in Austin.

clay/kizer complex...new food vendor...food is not good...at all...remember those incredible cheeseburgers? horrible now...with the first bite the cheap bun disintegrates like it's 90% air...the meat is without beef flavor....kinda like cardboard...the 'lemonade' they now have is water that had a lemon waved over it from 2 feet elevation...zero flavor...

and the prices went up like it's gourmet food theyre serving...

i eat at the carneceria up the street on stassney toward the freeway...they've got GREAT food! i can get 3 great tacos for the same price as one lousy taco at the new vendors...

oh, and a dr pepper was $2...they aint gittin' a dang dime from me again... lol

also: the hot dogs are bad...and the 'sausage' is just an oversized hot dog....tastes identical...digusting...

Ok, Austin next week for a few days.

Thursday I'll hopefully be in the car heading to a course by noon for my first round in about a month:

Riverside

Kizer

Grey Rock

???

Not expecting much so just looking at this as my shake off the rust round.

Will likely play Avery or something further north on Friday

I heard Riverside is looking better, not my favorite course.

Grey Rock, meh, i guess its fine

With the demise of the I35 GS, I've been wondering which is the best driving range option for places North of say the 183/I35/290 triangle, to as far as Round Rock or Cedar Park?

Avery Ranch has a deal going on for monthly practice facility access and I went up there to check it out yesterday and I think I may need to dial back my expectations from NorCal levels. As all the places I've been to so far have been pretty darn sandy.

I've been to the ranges at:

Woodlands

Avery Ranch

Bluebonnet

Harvey Pennick

I've not been to the Leadbetter range, the one day I went out there, they'd closed cause it'd been a bit wet and I am guessing Balcones is fully private.

TBH, I'm not normally a range guy - unless I've bought new clubs and want to get used to them - but my iron play has fallen off a cliff and I'm actually go to take a lesson or two and work on fixing things and maybe even take a few months off from playing, so a decent range can help keep me interested.

Ledbetter on Greenlawn is the best option north. It is pricey at $16, but it is all you can hit, plus they have shortgame and mid range areas. I normally use Morris Williams in the AM's and Bluebonnet in the PM's because they are $6, and face away from the sun at those times. Mo Willy has the best short game areas of the two. I gave up on Avery a couple of years back....way too much traffic at all times during the day. Teravista is their sister course, and has better conditions, short game, and a far superior putting green than Avery.

In January, I start the PD program at Star Ranch, which is balls, short game, and greatly reduced green fees at decent times. PM me if you want to hookup sometime...Friday afternoon is my usual time to play.

Thanks for the info :)

The Star Ranch $49/month deal looks solid, but since I am a weekend golfer, it'd turn into pretty much a range pass for me. That said I may need to pop out there and have a look anyways. Thanks again!

Just my luck I am going to Austin and the cold weather is coming with me :angry22:

Still, I have tee times for Avery, Falconhead and Shadow Glen which should get me my winter golf fix.

I seem to have an ability to fly somewhere thinking it will be warm and be there for the only frost delays of the year.......

Oh man...30's in the bright sun is about as cold as it gets in Austin...sorry about that. You might even find it pleasant, if you're accustomed to Boston this time of year.

You have some solid choices in that lineup. Be sure to post what you think about Shadowglen after you play it...it gets mixed reviews. FYI...Star Ranch is in the same general area, and is a much better track.

Great Hills is pretty nice...private, so it has that going for it. It's an older, hill country course, so you will probably find it on the shorter side. Has a few quirky holes, but you should enjoy it.

I played Falconhead this morning. The pro thought I was nuts but I told him I'm here, if you're open I'm playing. I then got him to skip the cart and carried and walked instead hoping it would keep me warmer. Felt like I was climbing Mt Washington at times, never got above 31* and the wind was howling. I had every piece of clothing I had on but I had the entire course to myself. I managed one birdie and finished with the same two balls I started with which I considered a minor miracle. I figure I am all set for Scotland golf now.

Well done getting a round in! And for the course being open.

I'd have thought those balls would have for sure ran and hid somewhere ;)

I tried to go to the range after work last night, and the muppets at Leadbetter were shutting down because it was getting a bit windy and said they'd be opening back up next Tues :-S

Snowed in, should have played today. Settled for Topgolf thinking I didn't have time. There could be a hungover masshole scrounging around Kizer tomorrow morning.

LOL! Well on the plus side it should be a quick round.

Just whatever you do, once you are back in New England, do not look at our weather forecast next week.

I will be in Austin from March 21-25 from the Chicago area. Going with a buddy for golf and bbq.

Based on the discussion in this thread, I will be looking most closely at the following courses. Anything I'm missing? I don't think we will golf at them all so which two are a must? Would love to play the Coore Crenshaw at Barton but won't be staying at the resort.

  • Falconhead
  • Avery Ranch
  • Star Ranch
  • Roy Kizer
  • ShadowGlen

The most challenging course I think is ShadowGlen and is in great shape right now. Falconhead is nice but I haven't played it in a long time so don't know if it is in good condition - but it usually is pretty good.

But depending on your time and travel - you can't beat driving down to Blanco and playing Vaaler Creek - one of the best courses in the hill country. And on your drive back to Austin you can visit the world famous Salt Lick restaurant in Dripping Springs for the best BBQ in the Hill Country. Win/Win situation for golf/BBQ.
