Top 3 public are Falconhead, Avery Ranch and WolfDancer

Second 3 would be Teravista, Star Ranch and Grey Rock

Economic 3, and still pretty good, are Shadowglen, Roy Kizer and Crystal Falls.

If you have the time...I'll call these the Travel 3, are Vaaler Creek, The Bandit and Cowan Creek

all these courses are on Golfnow...so be sure to check it out.

Cool twist to driving range would be TopGolf at the Domain. You should definitely check that out. The only 2 regular ranges, not at a course, are Mr. Tee at FM20/Parmer Lane (north austin) and the Oak Hill range on US290 W (southwest Austin)

PM me if you want some company...I might be able to sneak out Thursday....Friday afternoon for sure.

Scott, I would recommend Falconhead for sure. After this rain we get, that course is going to be in great shape. Also, Avery Ranch is awesome. Price points are about the same. If you want to dig deep, Wolfdancer is by far the best, but you'll pay for it.

Let me know what time you're going out there. I may be able to join as well.

thanks guys...

my plans basically are arrive tomorrow at 519pm...

then i leave the 29th and head home to scotland... been in Calgary last 3 weeks but only golfed once due to the flooding and stampede...

i certainly need to head to range wednesday to practice!!! last 2 rounds i played - Pine hills in mountains here 85 and Gleneagles back in scotland 91 have been my worst rounds this year...

thanks for the others to play might take you up on that...

not liking the sound of rain... get enough of that at home!!! guess it will freshen up the courses though...

You might try Barton Creek....about 15 minutes from you. It's private, but call them & tell them you're in from Canada & they'll probably get you on. about $100.

Avery Ranch is 45 minutes, so is Vaaler Creek. Basically, everything is 45 minutes away because of where you are staying.

Did you enjoy Falconhead? Hot down here, isn't it?

i am actually from Scotland - so yes much hotter than there!! i actually love humidity...

falconhead was fun although i have lost my swing right now... rhythm is terrible and only hit 35% fairways and i normally hit 68... and the fairways there are wide!!!

since i am so close will definitely play there again next week...

friend says 100 is too steep for him so dunno now...

You won't be able to play Barton Creek for $100. I paid much more than that the day I got married there.

Played Star Ranch on 7/19...and it was in great condition....as usual. First time I ever played there with no wind....makes things quite a bit easier.

Will be at Falconhead today....will post an update on the greens. Hopefully, all the rain has helped.

sad to report that the greens at Falconhead are still in shambles. The rest of the course is really good though.

Anybody know what they are doing? They are light brown, have verticuts all over, and the grass is super thin. They might lose 7 and 8 this summer.

Shadow Glen is playing excellent right now. Course is in very good shape and the greens are rolling smooth. Very nice test of golf - especially for the price and the fact that the course is not crowded. The Bronze tees at ~6600 yds and the white tees at ~6000 yds allow practicing a wide range of approach shots.

well avery ranch was fun today - shot 84... i am still scoring bad but can actually hit the ball now...

well except my 3 wood... hit it 4 times today and lost 3 balls... lost another with my driver... so if it wasn't for that i would have played well enough...

so looking for recommendations for wednesday? cheaper round 30-40 as friend doesn't have much cash...

playing falconhead thursday for my last round here....

I received a direct answer from Falconhead...

The greens had a good deal of thatch as a result of improper verti-cutting the past 2-3 years. The current superintendent is working to correct that condition using a process called 'Planet Air' which is similar to verti-cutting to significantly reduce the thatch and to re-direct the grass to grow vertically instead of horizontally. In doing this, his goal is improve the long-term health of the greens while keeping them rolling well although they may not look as good as they have. He could make them look great; but, this would be of short-term benefit.

I guess in fairness they do still roll fairly well....much better than aerated greens.

More info on #7 and #8 greens:

The previous superintendent used too much winter seed which choked out some of the bermuda on several greens and #7 was affected more than others. On #8, the back left quarter was 'scalped' by a bad mower setting a couple years ago and past recovery efforts were inadequate. The new superintendent has removed some trees that shaded that area which will help; and in the next several weeks, he's is going to replace the bad turf and the base the turf sets on.

You should do Vaaler Creek in Blanco...about same distance (timewise) away as Avery Ranch...just the other direction.
