My SGI Experiment

There have been a few posts on here lately about switching to a GI iron from a "players" iron, with the posters having great success.

 

I am playing Mizuno JPX 800 Pro's, 5-PW. I have been struggling all year with my game. No time to practice...9-18 holes per week, if i'm lucky....and NO confidence! Only 2 rounds in the 70's ths year, and an 88 last time out, hitting only 5 GIR!

 

So.....I don't have any GI irons laying around, so I took my son's Maltby MHS / SGI irons and put them in the bag. First round 79. Second round 76. Third round 80. Fourth round 78... w/39 putts!

 

What do I do now??? Do I keep the Maltby's in the bag??? I have to admitt, I am a bit embarrassed playing the Maltby MHS's. If they said Ping or Titleist on the clubhead, I wouldn't care.

 

This is a mental game, and this is making me mental!!

To me it's all about the results. It doesn't matter what you use to get there.

Here's what you do...if it will keep bugging you if you do not find a solid replacement for the Maltby's....trade your JPX 800s in for some Taylormade Burner 2.0s

burners and cobra s3s are cheap right now. JPX800HDs are pretty awesome as well.

Play the Maltby's. Seriously......
nobody cares about your clubs. I always think it's cool when someone throws down a low number with some junk I've never heard of. Just proves it's the Indian not the arrow, unless you're using the wrong clubs.

It's all about confidence and commitment. You need to just try to practice and play as much as possible. The 800 Pro's aren't bad irons. Just stick with them.

One of my playing partners palys Burner 2.0's. He hits them well. I would just need to reshaft!

An SGI head with some PX 5.5's might be the ticket!!

Results are the thing! if you don't like Maltby's go try out other brands and get them in your bag!

I think people are missing the point of the OPs post. If he is embarrased about the Maltbys he probably doesn't want to play them. No matter how well you play clubs, if YOU are embarrased, that can mess with your game. If you want the affirmation of the WRXers, go with what you play best. If you want to truly like what you are gaming...

If you are looking for alternatives the Burner 2.0s are great. I also like the Adams CB2s.

Exactly why I suggested just trying to find a good set of SGI from a big brand name

If you like Maltby's the first OEM clubs you should be looking at is Callaway. When you look at the Playability ratings of golf clubs on the Golfworks.com site it is apparent Malltby and Callaway share the same club design philosophy.

c'mon man. don't be THAT guy. be the other guy. the cooler, above-it-all guy who plays component clubs and kicks everyone else's a$$.

Seemed like his original question pretty much answer that, don't you think? He ain't gonna play 'em long term if they don't have a cool and expensive name on them.

For my part, if I stumbled on a set of component clubs that "did it for me" I wouldn't mind playing them long term. But I'm just not willing to venture spending several hundred bucks having a set custom made, hoping I'll like them. I'm just too fickle to spend much money on something I can't turn around and sell off if/when I decide to try something different.
