True Aim: A Driver Accuracy Aid Review

Recommended Posts

True Aim is a product designed to help the golfer hit more fairways by applying a decal to the crown of the driver club head, which helps the golfer better aim his or her tee shots. The golfer has a choice of seven decals, that can be used in 14 different ways, depending upon which the golfer prefers.

Here is what the decals look like.

The kit comes with a set of temporary decals, permanent decals that mirror the temporary ones, and a scorecard. When you receive your kit, you take it to the range, warm up a bit, lay an alignment rod on the ground (or golf club), apply a temporary decal (the scorecard will show you in which order), and hit three balls with each temporary decal, and keep score. You start with no decal. Scoring is done as follows:

--Zero points for 21 plus yards right or left of target

--Five points for 11 to 20 yards right or left of target

--Ten points for 1 to 10 yards right or left of target, and

--Fifteen points for right on target.

You then total your points with each decal. The maximum number of points with each decal is 45 and the minimum is 0. The decals are easy to apply and remove, but care must be taken when you do remove them. Your driver should be clean and dry during this process.

After you have determined which decal has given you the highest total, you then reapply that decal and hit three more shots to confirm the results. Overall the process was easy. The True Aim kit is well put together and comes with simple, easy to follow instructions.

Here are some pictures of what the temporary decals look like on the club head.

Frankly, I was a bit dubious about True Aim. I didn't think a simple decal could help me find more fairways, but I was willing to give it a shot (pun intended). The entire process took 75 minutes, but your mileage may vary. I went through every decal iteration.

Does True Aim work? For me it did. While I scored better on some decals than others, I scored better with any decal than with no decal at all. Was it the decal itself? Was it the bit more confidence it inspired while I stood over the ball? I can't say. What I can say was that with the True Aim decal I hit my target much more often than with no decal at all. That translates to more fairways, which translates to lower scores.

Would I recommend True Aim? Yes.

The cost of the True Aim kit is $19.95, plus shipping and handling. Their website is: http://www.mytrueaim.com/index.html

Please note that the permanent decal conforms to the Rules of Golf, however the temporary one does not.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Sean

Dscvrr, the one in the upper right in the decal picture worked best for me...scored a perfect 45 with it..I also really liked the look of that one too. That said there were a few other I scored very high on as well. The one that was the worst, relatively speaking, was the first picture on my driver (the simple straight line, where I only scored 20 points).

So the ABSOUTE MOST BUSY of the decals had you hitting it the straightest--per se!!!

WOW....so much for subtle alignment aids!

I think these look pretty interesting. I have an Edel and have experienced how different lines etc can make a person aim differently. I can't aim a heel shafted blade putter straight to save my life. Anything that helps with aim would help my game quite a bit since I do not get to practice or play as much as I used to and the first thing that gets "off" is my alignment.

Thanks for the simple review.

How much more 'permanent' is the permanent over the temporary to make it legal?

I wonder how statistically valid 3 shots is to determine which is best or if it even works...
[/quote]
The permanent sticker really sticks. To remove it takes some work. According to True Aim you'd need to use a credit card and your finger nails to get it off.

Actually, you'd need more than three shots. Once you determine which decal scores best for you, your hit more shots with that decal to validate those findings.

Guys,

Just thought I would add to this topic as I tried this out as well. When the contest first popped up, I checked out the product and went ahead and purchased the system as I felt the cost to be very reasonable.

I would agree with both of Huntser and Sean2's findings. I too have found my driving accuracy to be far more improved. Whether its simply getting lined up or being more aware of how I am lined up, but I have found that my driving has substantially improved with the use of this product. Many of the guys I golf with have noticed as well.

I also want to comment that the support and feedback from the guys at True Aim have been great. Jason Goldsmith has always responded to my emails and commentary as well.

My only disagreement with the comments about is that this is only for your driver. I fully plan to try this product with my other woods and hyrbids and to see if it can help improve my accuracy with those as well.

Best of luck.

This is way overdue, but I wanted to echo the OP's comments about this system. Like him, I signed up for the contest, but ended up purchasing it within minutes of signing up (I never win anyway). I felt really strongly at the time that this could help me. I am very visual, and I need to see the driver look a certain way at address. With today's drivers, I swear that the "alignment aid" is rarely square to the target. This also appears to be true for fairway woods. I think at times the paint break on the top line, as well as the curvature of the top line, can cause some deception with my eyes. I started to notice that on certain shots, the driver/fairway wood would look "correct" and on others, it would appear square, but I would have the shaft leaning backwards to accomplish that. This led to a variety of swing manipulations, or at least this was my theory.

So, now to the data....as a caveat, I did not due the full blown study as recommended by the instructions. I took the club out with the temporary decals that suited my eye, and played several rounds. I did this with the driver only. I'm still collecting data on the FW, as I don't hit it as often. All this data is from GolfShot (a great app for the iPhone, BTW).

5 rounds prior to using True Aim:

57.1% hit, 42.9% left, 0% right
42.9% hit, 42.9% left, 14.3% right
42.9% hit, 28.6% left, 28.6% right
35.7% hit, 32.1% left, 32.1% right
42.9% hit, 21.4% left, 35.7% right

Not great....what was interesting is that I had a lot of left misses, though a high fade/slice is my usual "miss" with respect to a swing flaw.

My last 9 rounds, all with True Aim:

71.4%, 7.1% left, 21.4% right
71.4%, 0%, left, 28.6% right
71.4%, 14.3% left, 14.3% right
57.1%, 0% left, 42.9% right
64.3%, 0% left, 35.7% right
69.2%, 0% left, 30.8% right
57.1%, 21.4% left, 21.4% right
100% (yeah!!!, though only 12 holes, had to stop due to weather)
85.7%, 0% left, 14.3% right (only 9 holes, and was 6/6 before coming to the last par 4, grrrr....)

To me, the data doesn't lie. I am looking down my line, then lining up the club, taking my stance, and firing away. No more guessing if the club is aimed where I want it to, and then making a swing compensation. It is interesting to me that the "misses" also seem to point in the direction that I normally miss (right). With the original data, I had a lot of left misses. Those have gone away for the most part, leaving only the rights, which are mostly attributed to my swing.

I am a believer.

Now, to answer a couple questions that were posed earlier. The temporary decals hold OK, but I found that under the heat wave we've had recently, they will peel, especially if exposed to water. I haven't had any issues with the permanent ones though.

The system appears to work for fairway woods too. I don't hit mine too often, but I do find myself losing these left or right less than before. It is nice to be able to have some confidence at address with these. The bracket shape is ultimately what I picked for my fairway wood, as I like the solid line that I can line up square to the target....this masks the paint break curvature that I mentioned earlier.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that their customer service is awesome! I placed the order originally, and discovered that my order had gotten lost in the mail (could have been my wife who tossed it, for all I know). Anyway, I sent Jason an e-mail letting him know, and had a new packet 2 days later! Have also gotten a few e-mails from him checking back on my progress with these alignment decals. :ok:

A few pics so that you can see what it looks like on a driver with an "alignment aid".

Save the $17 and just pickup a $3 roll of White 1/8" automotive pinstriping and make whatever alignment design you want. Right now I have 2 strips of Frogger masking tape (green color looks pretty sweet) on for the range. If I see a noticeable improvement off to Walmart to pick up the pinstriping. And it comes in whatever color you want to match the driver better.

Interesting.
I find that I sometimes the line on the club helps me with putting or on chipping
Off the tee, I have been confident using the line on the ball to align to the target and either cutting or hooking across the ball without regard to the markings on the clubhead.
This seems to work when I have to go against my natural shot for that day.
For example if I fading my driver and I need a hook, I use the line and make sure I bring my club from the inside.
or if I have a par 3 and Im drawing my irons, and the pin is tight to right side of the green with trouble then I will use the line on the ball and try a cut shot.
Off the fairway I just have to go with my natural shot .

So I just got back from a 60 hole in 40 hour trip to Streamsong. My buddy and I had Tim Tucker for our caddy for three rounds, he's one of the founders of this product. He gave us the TrueAim kit and I'm really excited to begin using it. I fight (off and on) a bad hook with my driver, and occasionally 3-wood if I hit it off the tee; I can usually tell at address when I'm going to hit it, but sometimes I just can't find my alignment. When I'm hitting straight shots, I feel comfortable at address and everything is aligned. I feel that this product might be the perfect aid to help always find alignment at address. The reviews in this thread are encouraging as well. I'll keep everyone posted on the results from my fitting.
