Byron Putters Thread

Thanks LaMont and Drew. I will post some more pics in a few days. Right now I'm up to my A*& in alligators. LOL!

Byron is great. I love this putter, and I think he's pretty proud of it too. A Dalehead is not easy to handmake. Byron was wonderful about sending the "progress" pics as he went. Very interesting to see.

Happy New Year to all!

John

Geo,

The first models which started in 1989 were the TourAngle M029, which was cast with a milled faces. There were versions in carbon steel, gun blued and hand finished, manganese bronze and later stainless. Longneck versions too. They were hand-finished some were bead blasted, etc. There was a big demand for dale heads at that time and there were a few people making copies.

The handmade I have dates from around 1992 and was an early one. Byron hung onto that one for about 10 years until he sold it to a collector.

Model Name: DR-1 High Beam Proto

Year Made: Approx. 1996

Material (e.g., 303 stainless, carbon steel, etc.): 303 Stainless, I believe

Grip: John Byron Lamkin

Neck Style: High Beam, milled out long neck

Face Stampings: None, just milled

Back Stampings: John Byron, Huntington Beach

Sole Stampings: None, that I remember

General Description: Sweet rolling mallet that was one of a kind.

Interesting story, history, etc.: On my first ever visit to John Byron Golf, I got to spend some time with John in the shop part of the business. The test strip was in the corner with putters from one end to the other. I saw this one and just had to have it. Turns out it was just something they put together to see how it looked and felt. I think they let me take it on the promise that I would send payment when I got home to Arizona. Both John and Byron were very nice guys and it all took off from there, for me. Sorry for the quality of the pic, but it was before the digital camera made its way into the Mann household.

Thanks for checking this one out.

Model Name: Byron No. 2 handmade

Year Made: 2005

Material (e.g., 303 stainless, carbon steel, etc.): Carbon Steel

Grip: Leather with a gold weave throughout

Neck Style: Plumber's neck, 3/4 shaft offset

Face Stampings: "BYRON NO.2"

Back Stampings: none

Sole Stampings: none

General Description: Sort of a carbon steel MyDay, with a Byron personal touch

Interesting story, history, etc.: My very first handmade putter and it is a gem. I ordered it raw and then applied a gun blue to it, myself. I went with minimal stampings (made up for it on my second custom putter). I'll get some better pics, this weekend.

Thanks,

Model Name: Dale Head 2, Copper Proto '98

Year Made: 1998

Material (e.g., 303 stainless, carbon steel, etc.): Carbon steel with copper plating

Grip: Not original, but a classy Winn Heritage model

Neck Style: Long Neck, plumbers' style

Face Stampings: Hand stamped "JOHN BYRON"

Back Stampings: None

Sole Stampings: Hand stamped "PROTO TYPE 98"

General Description: Super-sweet long neck DaleHead 2 Proto, done in copper with a gorgeous long neck hosel. All handstamped and the patina is unreal! The cavity looks like a darned rainbow.

Interesting story, history, etc.: This putter was given to me by a Cameron Collector that saw it on eBay, couldn't let it sell for such a price, and then decided that it didnt' fit in his collection. I offered to buy it, but he refused. It wound up on my porch a short time later. I rolled it for a while, as a gamer, but it is still mint. I hope you enjoy the pics.

Russ..glad to see I'm influencing others to buy putters. I can live vicariously through them instead of satisfying my own "needs". :) Sterling Dales are definitely cool and IMO one of the harder to find models especially in pristine shape. I'll have to get mine cleaned up as well as my "few" other Byrons to join this thread. :)

Reid- That is a FANTASTIC collection!

This one below is a Hand-Crafted Dale Head in carbon steel and gun blued.

I thought that was a special DH which caused me to email Byron. Byron told me it was just one of the few Dale Heads he did in a different finish. It's really a different finish that amazingly needs zero care. I'm not positive but I think Byron told me it was a version of Black Oxide but gloss. I hate to admit but I've really have done barely nothing to keep this putter looking good. Nothing close to the Camerons I've had. :drinks:

drew...what I really think I need to do is send one of those pics to Byron to double check everything on it. When I first asked him...I just used a simple description but that Dale Head feels really soft compared to other's I've had. :D

Reid -

Definitely follow-up with Byron. It looks exactly like the Hand-Crafted Dale Head from the old JB brochure (when the shop was at 411 Main Street).

Here's what the brochure says about it:"HAND-CRAFTED DALE HEAD: The ultimate in the Dale Head series is the hand-cracfted putter. This version offers a precision milled face and beautiful hand-finish unequaled by any other." Those are carbon steel and have the gold paintfill over a hand-finish.

There was also a version in melonite finish, which is very durable, but that version had white paintfill.

Whatever it is, it looks great. Now about one of those Sterling Dales :drinks:

Drew,

Do you still have the Black Byron Handmade from 2006?

Dan

Model Name: Byron Morgan un-named early handmade. I will call it the MO-Daddy, as the ancestor to the MO.

Year Made: circa 1991

Material (e.g., 303 stainless, carbon steel, etc.): Carbon Steel

Grip: Black Lamkin John Byron embossed leather stitch-back (still in plastic).

Neck Style: a beautiful welded goose neck that is round at the hosel and transitions to square to match the top line and tail. The weld is hand-filed flush.

Face Stampings: None

Back Stampings: BYRON MORGAN

Sole Stampings: None

General Description: This is one of Byron's very first handmade putters and a museum piece. The pictures don't do it justice at all. Somewhat reminiscent of TP Mills model 1 with a softtail and ferrule. The sole is hand sanded and highly polished with a flat portion in the middle back and trailing edge relief.

Interesting story, history, etc.: Byron made this in his old shop at 411 Main Street. Byron had this putter with him at the 1992 PGA show in Anaheim, CA, where his friend Scott C. held it and "seemed very impressed with it," according to Byron. Byron kept it for years but sold it 4-5 years ago to a private collector. I was lucky enough to win it on eBay (by far my best purchase ever).

Model Name: Byron 006
Year Made: 2010
Material: Carbon Steel, Black Oxide finish
Grip: IOmic Black Midsize
Neck Style: Plummers Neck
Face Stampings: Byron Morgan Vertically near the heel
Back Stampings: Three 4-leaf clovers in the cavity
Sole Stampings: None
General Description: Just a really clean and simple 006. This was my first Byron, and it's also my gamer. I've dropped more birdies with this putter than any other. the finish is starting to fade a touch on the sole, but it still looks great. Probably the one putter I'll never get rid of.
