NEWRX Outings

Recommended Posts

Alright guys, the plans for the outing have been finalized and booked. The details are as follows:

Where: The Pines course (the private one) at the International in Bolton, MA
http://www.theinternational.com/best-boston-ma-golf-courses/the-pines-boston-private-courses/
When: Sunday, October 28th - first tee time at 1:00PM
Cost: $79 which covers greens fee and cart

There are a limited number of spots, so please send a PM my way to RSVP by Wednesday (10/24) at the latest to make sure your name will be on the tee sheet. Regardless of whether you committed through the survey, I still need a PM from everyone planning on attending.

I look forward to hearing from everyone, and enjoying a great day of golf on a phenomenal course.

This will also give me an excuse to check out the TaylorMade performance lab while there.

You'll need an appointment to do that. You need to call Steve Tolpa.

Just want to see the setup if posible for future fitting. :)
[/quote]

Probably unlikely. it's a private facility and only available for appointments. If Steve Tolpa is around that day and not busy, I'll try to arrange for a quick tour of the facility.

Edit: I just emailed Steve to see if he'll be around & if it's possible to get a quick tour of the TM Lab. Please don't count on it, but I asked.

OK, here's the deal for anyone who's coming to The International next Sunday and wants to see the TaylorMade Performance Center.

There's going to be a fitting going on from 11:00 to 1:30. Steve has offered anyone who's interested, about a 15 minute window during that fitting (around 11:45 or so), for a quick look at the facility.

If you're playing, make sure you coordinate with twtolley ... he's in charge, I'm merely the enabler.

Here in CT, the meteorologists are watching Sandy to see whether the storm turns Northeast or Northwest later this week. Right now, they're calling for a cloudy and breezy Sunday, rain Monday. But that all could change if Sandy heads for New England.

A few things, gentlemen:

- If you haven't already, I need a PM with your info in order to get you on the tee sheet for this Sunday - I'd really like to have all confirmations by this evening to have an accurate idea of our turnout.

- As BrianL mentioned, there might be the possibility of a brief look at the Taylormade lab at 11:45. If you're planning on checking that out, make sure to plan your travel time accordingly.

- In addition, make sure to arrive 30 minutes ahead of the 1:00 tee times if you aren't showing up earlier to check out the Taylormade lab.

- The weather looks like it'll be chillier than initially expected, but the forecast is steadily improving. Cross your fingers that it continues to trend in that direction!

I'll be sure to send any additional pertinent info via text message/PM, should it be required, so keep an eye out! Also, if anyone has any questions, feel free to reach out over PM. I'm getting excited as Sunday's round nears - I look forward to seeing everyone this Sunday!

- Taylor

I was perusing at the course layout and distances. Any thoughts as to tees that those attending should play from? Is anyone going to try the Tiger tees? (Not I, that's for certain). But either Blues or Whites would work for this 14.3 Indexer.

Seeing as it's forcasted to be mid 50's, I'm thinking whites for myself.

The Tiger Tees are not available for play.

Unless we have a very low single digit, playing the Blues would not be a fun event. I doubt anyone with a double digit handicap will break 90 from the Whites ... I'd be surprised if a double-digit breaks 100.

Unfortunately, the TaylorMade Performance Lab is not going to be available. I don't know whether I messed up the date and confused Steve or he did ... but Sundays are out. Sorry.

Thank you Brian - you confirmed my first thoughts, which was to play the whites. My home course is pretty short (5900 yards); even without the degree of difficulty, 6500 should be plenty long enough for me. It does have me thinking if I should I drop my 60* wedge and add another hybrid, given the course's length.

Anyone else getting a little concerned about Sandy? I'll need to batten down the hatches Fri/Sat before heading off for this outing.

According to the latest weather report, the rain isn't scheduled to start until after 6:00 p.m. .... fast play will be the key. I've set the groups up with 3somes, to keep things moving along. The course should be fairly empty, so there's no reason to take more than about 3:45 minutes to play 18, which should get the last group in before 5:00 pm or so.

Just a word of advice ...

With the low winter sun & the length of the rough, bring plenty of golf balls if your'e not a straight hitter ... you'll need them! When you hit a ball in the rough and finally find it ... mark it with a hat or something or you'll lose it again!

Tee boxes & aprons were punched last week ... I won't know the condition of them, until I play later today.

Greens should be running around 10.5 or so.

White Tees will be playing around 6550 yards. This should be more than sufficient to provide a good test. The course slopes out at 132 from the whites, but will probably play harder.

The 5th Hole is the longest hole in the world (or at least it was) from the back Tees ... 715 Yards, Par 6.

The 5th Hole also has the largest Green in the world, at about 24,000 Square Feet.

There is GPS in all the carts ... pay attention to it, you'll need it for distances ... especially for the Tee Shot on #8. On the Par 4 8th, the Green is drivable from the front of the White Tee box, if you can carry it 275-285 with a Draw. Normal shot from the front of the white tee box on 8, is a 180-195 carry, right of the water.

I suppose I should just give everyone all the dope, now ...

1st hole: Correct Tee Shot is 200 yards to center of fairway. Hourglass Fairway narrows to 20 yards. You need to be on the RIGHT side.
2nd hole: You need to be on the right side of the fairway.
3rd hole: You should be on the left side of the fairway
4th hole: Par 3, don't go pin-seeking.
5th hole. Anywhere in the fairway. Pin should be in front quadrant ... 30-40 yards up from "center of green".
6th hole: Correct approach is right side of the fairway.
7th hole: DO NOT go long, short is way better
8th hole: Play it safe
9th hole: It doesn't matter what you try to do, you'll end up left, at the bottom of the hill. Short is better than long on approach.
10th hole: Hit the fairway
11th hole: Reachable Par 5, but don't try it. Play it safe, well to the right & have 140 yards to the green.
12th hole: Left side of the fairway is the place to be.
13th hole: Par 3
14th hole: Left side is better
15th hole: 220 yards to center
16th hole: Plays the yardage on the card. Front is better than back
17th hole: Hug the right tree line as much as possible.
18th hole: Par 5 and you need your Tee Shot to be farther left than you think you do.

There are Yardage Book available in the Pro Shop, that will give you more insight into how to play each hole.

Thanks for all this again. Can't wait.

When we arrive, where do we go and who do we say we're with (having never been there before)?

I still plan on being there an hour or so before to get warmed up. I like the google maps view of the practice area near the driving range. :)

Thanks for the update and the tips. How many threesomes are we talking about? If we're talking 4+ groups, I've got a 2:15 hour drive each way, so if there's any chance, may I request to get out in the first group? (not looking forward to the drive home).

I plan to be on the range around noon as well. I'll be the 51 year old Titleist fan boy.

I should have a dozen balls in the bag, so hopefully that will be enough. Maybe I'll grab two more sleeves.
Can't wait for Sunday!!
