Peter Broadbent handmade drivers

I am lucky enough to own 7 examples of Peters craft including a matched set of 3 woods. The majority are 'A' clubs. They are, in my opinion, some of the best woods made.

The issue with them is that most were custom order and so the chances of them matching your build and swing are remote. My way of saying I don't play them well! The exception is a fairway wood - guessing 4 wood - which sits just right for me and is a lovely solid block, I game that one quite regularly.

On the inserts, none of mine are Keysights which some seem to regard as Peter's signature. Three have red/white eye o matic style inserts similar to the Wilson inserts debated by Stixman and Jiggered above. I have no doubt mine are original Peter Broadbents as they are purchased from the original customer.

The matched set have black / white eye o matic inserts and my favoured 4 wood has a red insert.

Great clubs which don't attract the money they deserve.

Am new to this golf forum. I found you while searching for Peter Broadbent - Club Maker. Recently moved house and found Peters club, again.

I ordered this direct with Peter and he asked for a fade or draw and a Suntech Super Boron R shaft - this was very new at the time - have attached some photos. It shows Peter Broadbent and a 1 and my initials RC - plus 1 2 3. I have used this once a year. I play off 12 now, though when I was a 5 it could drive a Dunlop 65 220 yards with this club.

I'm open to suggestions re this lovely club, perhaps a Golf Museum, or a serious collector of golf memorabilia Golf kit.

Please come back to me with your thoughts.

My name is Simon - I live in the UK.

 

When I was a junior 30 years ago, a 2nd hand Peter Broadbent driver came into my local pro-shop - I am not sure why, but I had to have it (despite metal woods firmly being in vogue)..

 

Being inquisitive (and remembering an article in golf world) I wrote a letter to Prter Broadbent asking for information.

 

 Peter actually called me and explained the history of the club - it was one of two exactly the same made for a tour pro (I think Des Smyth but need to think back).  They chose the other driver and this one was given away for charity.

 

I will post the code later - happy for you to contact me if as Pete’s son, you would be interested in getting it back?

I have a Peter Broadbent driver - code C15 (driver)

 

It has an interesting history - I bought it @35 years ago.  I spoke to Peter Broadbent about it and he told me the following:

 

”I made 2 drivers for tour pro Des Smyth that were the same - the C15 is the one Des chose not to keep”

Lovely club Aspidistra. I don't think I have seen an "L" before? This must be among the very last clubs Peter produced.

I have 4 "A's", a "B", a "C" and a "K". This set is interesting as it is made up of an "A" a"B" and a "C" which i assume means the original customer couldn't afford to order all three at once and so but up the set over 3 years.

That is not entirely surprising as i believe they cost around £250 each in the mid '80's. Putting that in context, i paid £50 for a MacGregor SEOM driver in 1985 and am pretty sure a set of high end irons was around £250 at that time. In today's money that must be well into four figures per club?!

They should really command better prices but like Aspidistra I have picked mine up for quite modest prices.

Peter made two for Des Smyth - Des chose the other one and gave this one away and eventually - 30 years ago - I managed to buy it for £5 from my local pro-shop.

This is a bit of a long story, but I used to be in the golf business and bought a "job lot" of drivers off Peter at the Muirfield Open 1992. Originally they should have been sold in my shop, but for one reason and another it didn't happen and 5 drivers got put into storage. They are

Limited Edition 4/10

Limited Edition 6/10

Limited Edition 9/10

K119 (the 9 isn't too clear)

 

4 don't look like they were ever used and three still have the price on. The lacquer on all needs renewing and I'd not want to sell them unless they were seen before purchase, for fear the purchaser was in anyway disappointed.

Since I last posted on this thread, Peter Broadbent's A1 has found its way into my collection.

Obviously not the first persimmon he made but the first he gave a serial number to / catalogued. 

Given my interest in, and wider collection of, his craft, I am very pleased to own this club.

Mrs Foozle must never know just how keen I was to acquire this....

The club is discussed on the first page of this thread, back in Sept / Oct 2012. The owner at that time believed it was unplayed which is my view also. It has picked up a mark on the sole plate which is surprising as it lives in a fully protected whole club sleeve. I have read elsewhere that Peter used these when sending clubs out so probably also original. 

Sadly no knowledge on who it was originally made for. Peters son confirms the date as 1984 which is where I took my understanding from when we discussed this recently.
