Tour Action 588 wedges

I currently play some Nike wedges and am reasonably happy with them but would like to change it up. I love the look of oil can or rusty wedges. I've been looking on eBay and seems like I can pick up a couple of rusty TA 588's for well under $100. I take pretty significant divots with my current wedges 52/10 and 60/6 and get

a good amount of spin when I play with a tour ball (typically play Bridgestone e6).

My questions are:

Are the TA 588's still a viable option?

How can I tell if a wedge still has life left in it?

I like to hit my wedges on the range and

typically practice not less than 2 times per week often times 4 range sessions in 1 week.

Will forged wedges wear out too quickly for me?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I'm new to the world of buying used clubs, but am incredibly happy with the forged black Adams idea pro golds I bought used off of here so it will be tough for me to buy anything new again.

The old TA 588 wedges are great clubs. The only issue concerns the usga's 2010 conforming grooves rule. The grooves do not conform (which is only an issue if you play Omg tournaments where the conditions of competition are in play).

Thanks for the heads up.
I am somewhere between a 6 and an 8 so a long way from playing competitively. I have no concerns about the new wedge rules. If I didn't think that it would make me look like a total dork, I would probably buy one of those old school infomercial wedges that will spin your ball back 50 feet.

I've been using a raw RC grind (Roger Cleveland) 588 for a couple of years now and I love it. I will probably be playing it until the grooves are gone.

Anyone else out there still using the old school Cleveland wedges?

Does this answer your question?

Wedges are really the clubs that you should replace most. Personally i wouldn't feel confident grabbing an old wore down wedge that could date back to the 80s. All that being said the 588s are fantastic wedges and its always possible that you can find a couple that sat in some dudes closet and are in great shape.

Yes forge wedges are softer and a little more prone to wear down, and abuse.

You can pick up a couple of floor sample 2012 588s on ebay right now for 79 shipped so i cant really come up with a reason why you would want a wedge that can be older then rickie fowler.

What could the age of a wedge possibly have to do with performance?

I love the 588's so much I picked up some tour 588's with conforming grooves. I am so mad I missed out on a couple that were on the BST in gunmetal last night. They're so hard to find these days. I consider the 588's the most traditional wedge there is and in the same boat as the Ping Anser or a Ping Hoofer. Instant Classics.

Great thread by Howard Jones about renovating old wedges. It's not just the grooves, it's the whole face that goes smooth. I've been using some Neilsen CT1607 diamond needle files, 150 grit, to file down the face - diagonally as explained. Works a charm. I'm no longer afraid of old wedges!

Agree with this. The grooves on cast wedges — which the vast majority of wedges are — don’t wear down that fast. I have a Cally Mack Daddy 2 tour grind that stops great and I have practiced with it quite a bit.

A good way to tell if a 588 is used up is the word "Cleveland" on the sole. If it's blurred, it's probably toast.

I always keep an old Cleveland 588 Tour Action 56* wedge around for bunker practice.

I was friends with Errie Ball, who passed at age 103, but he could play wonderful bunker shots with an old Cleveland TA 56*. His wedge had worn down grooves, but he could spin the ball out of the bunker with no problem.

Fun to watch.
