"Really? True Tempers web site says tipping for a steel driver shaft is zero inches."

Zero tip trim is for a bore-thru head. Standard bore tip trim for a DG in a driver is 1 1/4". Trust me. I've been building clubs for a long time.
I'm not doubting that is what it said at one time, what I said though is TT's web site CURRENTLY says that for standard wood tipping on a driver is "zero" inches.

I ADMITTEDLY haven't built a ton of steel shafted drivers up until this point. I also found / read the same info that PT did. ZERO tipping for standard bore - True Temper says that / Golfworks (where I buy my stuff) says that / Golfsmith said that. I did tip the classic an inch - but my other 2 are ZERO tip X100s and they are MONEY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a chart that they don't have on their website showing the proper amounts to tip trim DG's for different bore types. If you just go to the PDF on TT's website, it only lists trimming amounts for bore-thru heads, whereas there should be three different lengths to trim if that chart were giving you all the info. You can call or email True Temper if you're not in agreement with me about this, but I assure you I'm right. They haven't changed Dynamic Gold shafts for as as long as they've been making them.

Nah I'm good, I tipped mine an inch and a half anyway and it works awesome. Thanks for the info though. It does sound dumb for them to have tipping chart for bore thru on their web site when there are exactly..........zero.......bore thru heads being made now days, doesn't it? BUT, on the other hand if someone screws one up they are only $14 to replace! Lol

Played Lost Key in Perdido Fri & Sat ... Tore it up ... Barely left the fairway ... I'm sold

Β

Found out my AMP 3 wood / TX95X YSQ+ is a CANNON there too

Wow. I played there last year with my son and his buddy. They say the locals call it "Lost Ball." That thing is narrow. I probably didn't hit driver more than 2 times per round. That is impressive.

drum .. Thanks a TON for that 411 !!!!!!!!

So If I installed an X100 UNTIPPED in a 205g head - I am really playing a soft S flex at this point. The 2 UNTIPPED do feel a slightly looser than the tipped Classic

Good thing I ordered 10 shafts huh ... For the cost of 1 modern graphite driver

Are you in the states drum ??

Yep, I reside in northern Misery, I mean Missouri. Even without trimming the tip on an X100, it will still play stiffer than an S300. You're about halfway between an S300 and an X100 without tipping. Plenty stiff for most people. Too many guys let their ego get in the way and play shafts that are too stiff for them. Then they wonder why they can't hit worth a crap. So you really didn't hurt anything by not tipping, IMHO.

Well if someone (ROBOPTI) would have rigged the lefty contest a few month back this is exactly how I would have ordered my Classic, but NOOOOOOOOO he had to be all fair an stuff :)

I am currently sending out cruise missiles via a steel shafted 983k so this would be so fun to try.

Well guys, it is sort of bitter sweet with this club. I have drank a TON of Koolaide over my years on WRX, some sort of worked but for the most part with my hi spin, high launch, and higher swing speed alot didn't work that worked for hundreds of other WRX'ers. This steel shaft thing is ROCKING THE HOUSE! Now the bad part, I am sitting here thinking how much money I have spent over the years on graphite shafts!!! :russian_roulette:

OK !!!!!!!!! ... I think I have solved this one ...

So I couldn't stop thinking about this - so I called True Temper. Got a VERY cool guy on the phone. I explained why I was calling & thread etc and the confusion on the tipping issue - and that we are confused as to what the real answer is.

When I asked "How much do you tip a STEEL shaft" .. He INSTANTLY said " INCH & 1/4"

So we both were looking at the PDF on the site where it says "zero tip trim" ... and here's what I THINK & him as well happened

Since True Temper now owns Project X - When you go to their site - the trimming instructions are next to the GRAPHITE shaft area - which is correctly ZERO trim on the PX Black shafts.

When you go to the DG steel area - it says "see tipping Chart Page 1". That appears to be an unintentional error - and they are now looking into that .

So the real answer is is appears drumdude is RIGHT ON THE MONEY !!!! ... YOU DA MAN !!!

I just ordered another arsenal of steely's and I am going to build a few correctly .. but I gotta say an X100 untipped is really good for me. I like the extra flex and feel - and its still so stable I just cant put it down

ONWARD WE GO !!!

Was going to play 9 before work but didn't have enough time so went to the range instead. This setup didn't work as hope it would. I was hitting it short and right vs my current driver. I don't mind hitting it shorter b/c I know it's due to the length, etc but it kept going right. I could not get it to go straight or draw at all. Will be playing over the weekend so I'll give it another shot and see how it goes.

Sounds like you went with too stiff a shaft. Maybe try an S300? My driver is easier to draw since I put the steel shaft in it, and I haven't noticed any loss of distance. A more flexible shaft will help you turn it over more easily, and will give you a bit more distance.

Thinking about going with a 905R or a 983k with a steel shaft any thoughts on this one way or the other
Either one should be a great driver, but be careful when reshafting the 905R. It has an aluminum sleeve in the hosel that will come out if you use too much heat to pull the shaft. They used two different epoxies when shafting those heads. The epoxy that holds the shaft in has a lower break down temp than the epoxy they used to install the sleeve. So use a good shaft puller and as little heat as possible to pull the shaft, and the sleeve should stay in. Oh, and my vote goes for the 905R, but either one would be sweet!

Beautiful, the perfect setup for a "Classic" driver!

My golf pro was also suggesting I re-shaft my 3W with a lightweight (100g) NS Pro950 steel shaft instead of going with one of the high-tech graphite shafts. I have the NSPro Utility shaft in my hybrid and love it.

I'm going to try to win an 8.5Β° 983E today. If I get it the first thing I'll do is put an X100 in it. That should be a nice mid-launching rocket for me.

OK, I'm the latest convert. I used to bomb (very long and straight) a steel shafted driver in early 2000's and have recently been asking myself why I can't seem to hit the driver consistently anymore. After reading this thread, I put an S300U (the .335 version) into a TM Superfast TP (Black version) 8.5 @44" and D2 and played it today. I haven't hit the driver that good in years!!! Gave up maybe 15 yards (maybe because I can't be certain as the fairways were soft and wet) certianly no more and found a lot more fairways. As I got more comfortable with really going after it, I actually hit it better. I haven't been able to be that aggressive with the driver in years, knowing it's not going left, no matter how hard I swing it. I also happen to prefer the feel of the steel shaft loading in the swing and the fact that I knew exactly where the club was at all times. With graphite I tend not to be able to feel the club at the top of the swing which typically makes me get short under pressure.

I must admit, as soon as I swung it on the range this morning, it felt like talking to an old friend that you haven't seen in years where you just seem to pick up where you left off last time. I don't see myself going back to graphite anytime soon.

I have a .350 S300 on order to put into my Classic 290 9.0 head.....................and one for my Mashie Fairway 15.5.........

I had this head sitting on my table ready for something just like this to be done to it! 9.5 degree VR Pro LE, DG X100, 43.75 inches, Midsize TV grip. I got the weight of the head up to 212 grams (cotton) and the swing weight came in just a tad higher than D3. I took it to the range today, and I admit being a bit skeptical. Hit about a dozen balls with my current gamer (9* razr fit, ahina 70x, 44.75). Then hit this baby. Of course it was a tad shorter than the razr, but not by much. The thing that amazed me was how hard it is to mishit this thing. I don't know if its the steel or the short length, but WOW even on my bad swings the ball didn't go flying off the grid like usual! The feel is also something I was surprised by. The VR LE head is a great feeling head to begin with, but with the cotton and the steel it feels like nothing i've ever hit before! I am def ordering another shaft for the razr fit, and maybe one more to go in a G15 head that needs a new shaft.....So yes ROBO i drank the cool-aide and now I'm just deciding what club i have to drop to carry two drivers! LOL!
