"That" guy on the range

Recommended Posts

Could not help but chuckle on the range this morning.

I was hitting balls when along came a guy (probably around 35), dressed in a luminous green shirt and pink/luminous green flower pattern long pants (which I can only assume were Loud Mouth pants). White belt, white shoes, white cap, white RBZ driver, white RBZ FW.

He proceeded to "loosen up" by hitting 1 handed wedges. He hit 5 shots with his left hand, and shanked every one of them. He then hit 5 shots with his right hand, and fatted every one of them.

Then he got to the full swing. He didn't have a bad swing. He looked like he was a capable golfer. He did lay the sod over a couple of irons, and a couple of FW wood shots though.

The whole time I kept on thinking of how much he reminded me of "that" guy in the Wilson commercials.

I wonder why people draw attention to themselves in that manner, especially when they proceed to shank and fat shots.

I saw that guys brother yesterday, but a Rickie Fowler fan. All orange, including flat brimmed hat, puma shirt, puma pants, puma shoes.... white shoes with orange accents and a white belt.. He was probably in his late 30's. Not a great look.

I find it crazy, that a 35 year old man, is dressing like that. What is wrong with people today. Grow up and quit dressing like Ricky Fowler.

Its OK for the young kids, but not adults.

i have a couple loudmouth things. The quality of them is really nice, and the ladies love them. I couldn't care less what some guys thinks of me though. I dont wear them when im at a serious course, but if im at a charity scramble or playing with friends ill break them out.

edit: im in my early 20's if that makes a difference

At least once a week I see 'that guy' at the range.

Last week it was a mid 40s fella with a staff bag with his name on it, full of brand new RBZ everything.

Everything he hit turned into a giant banana slicing 30-40 yards.

I figure that everyone has fun in their own way so I normally don't even speak to anyone on the range and just get lost in my music and my practice.

Well this just proves that the purpose of "loudmouth" attire works! People dress the way they do in accordance to how they feel.. if the old guy was feeling good and wanted some attention, he sure got it! I like to do the opposite.. i go to a local public golf course wearing sweats, sneakers and maybe a clean t shirt, expecting people to think i'm a hack.. then i proceed to bomb 300 yard drives to the back of the driving range.. and when people start watching and asking questions, i just say "ehh i just started 'golfing' a couple weeks ago!".. lol jk

This topic needs pics. We could set up something similar to the popular "people of wal-mart" series.

Come join us in South Carolina...there are plenty of those "Wal-Marters" here. Just take a Friday night and go be amazed, haha!

In response to the OP, it is entirely weird. The image of a golfer for me is the Fred Couples-Davis Love 'conservative' look. The 'Polo Golf-ers' like Webb Simpson seem to be opting for that over the Puma/Nike/UA look which for me is kind of silly on a golf course. I think people want folks to look at them for what they have/own/wear but I don't think people realize that they're also be watched--and judged--by everyone around them, too.

To some people it is part of the game and Part of what makes golf fun for them. Flashy clothes, hoing the newest clubs, staff bags. It's not my way , but I'm cool with others sporting the look or clubs they want and I don't judge them one way or the other.

To be honest, in my opinion I think the common Adidas , under armor, Nike golf shirts are to flashy for me. I usually go with a regular polo and plain flat front shorts. Some echo hybrid bioms and I'm good to go.

The other shoe: No fancy clothes, but I took my bag full of i20 clubs (well, the putter is a SC) to the range on Sat to get a feel for the new KBS Tour shafts I had stuck in them last weekend. Walked past a couple of young studs (late 20s?) who were looking at my bag and snickering at each other.

So I warmed up hitting about 10 balls onto the green at 148, all but one landing on the green and I think 3 or 4 were inside 10'.

Then I proceeded to hit some balls at the 220 yd green, landing a few on it, with most within 10' either way.

Then I took driver and started putting balls out the end of the driving range.

I left about half the bucket there, telling the 'boys' (who were chunk'n and top'n shots everywhere) that they were welcome to some additional practice.

Not exactly being nice, but hey, they started it! ;)

I've always had a thing for the bright neon colors, loudmouth pants etc. However, I could never seem to let myself been seen in public with them. Don't get me wrong, I can play. Any given day I can go out and shoot a 2-3 over round, but than again I can also throw in the 85 round! If your going to look like a total knucklehead, you better know how to play! My luck, I'll bring it out to the course and the 13 handicap golfer will show up instead of the 2!

Not a big fan of loudmouth clothing whatsoever, so I know what you mean. On flip side of the coin, if he looked like a capable player, he could of been trying some new things in his golf swing that was making him hit it poorly. Most times at the range, I really don't care where I hit the ball if I am trying new technique tweaks with positions. It is more about getting the technique down. Making changes to the golf swing mostly equates to hitting it worse before hitting it better and it is a long process.

You know...

...at the risk of sounding a little too serious here, some people actually look good in those louder colors. A brightly colored shirt, a white belt--all that stuff. Some people carry that 'young, hip and cool' look really well. I mean, Rickie Fowler looks great, I think. I have a friend who is that way. Nicely built, good tan, dark hair...he looks good in the Adidas/UA/Nike stuff he wears. Now, on the other hand there's me. Irish background =/= loud colors. Maybe I could do white pants on a bold day or something. I do have some flat front Nike's! ;)

For now I'll stick with the khakis and preppy polos. I have been rocking the white belt as of late!

Its funny because in the states (and in the UK where im from) you kind off look down on people who have the best and most flashy gear. Well here in Korea, you would get looked down on for not having a white staff bag with matching white headcovers and a bag full of brand new JDM clubs. I walk to the range from my house so i dont want to lug my bag every time i go. I usually carry 5-6 clubs with me and i can often feel people looking down on me for doing so, until i start hitting balls that is!

I go to a range that is close, inexpensive, great greasy burgers and fries, most of all fun people from all walks of life! 'That Guy' shows up occasionally. Now most are there in shorts, faded, sweat stained hats, old shirts etc. ( who wears expensive shirts to 'the range'?). So when 'He' shows up it's a show stopper. The old guys just look open mouthed, the young snicker and everyone enjoys the 'show' I'm no elitist snob, but I swear I've never seen one of 'That Guy' who could play. Very entertaining though.

Careful on the judgements, I have a friend who likes to hit shanks down the range when it is busy. As the ball rolls in front of the other players he says stuff like "Sorry... really sorry, I'm working on that." On the course he is a 1 HDCP who regularly shoots under par. It is funny to him, and really funny to those who know he's doing it on purpose.

I can't decide whats worse in these threads, those who dress to call attention to themselves, or those who care enough to say they are better than "that guy."

My friends and I used to say, "If you're going to have a custom golf bag with your name on it....you'd better be able to play."

I'm thinking of changing that to, "If you're going to dress like a clown and draw attention to yourself....you'd better be able to play." And that's probably a little mean.

White belts are now just a fashion choice - they're not for me. I'm not good enough to wear a white belt. I can't say golf has always been fashion forward - more like golf has been fashion inflicted. Look at the plaids of the 1970s. I suppose the Loudmouth brand is the plaid of the 1970s.

As an old guy....I can say this - Hard to go wrong with greys & khakis and black golf shoes or white/black saddle.

I couldn't give to craps about what someone else wants to wear. If wearing loud clothes makes them feel good, so what? Dont' be pissed because they have the self esteme to where what they want and not give a s*** about what other people think.

If you want to make fun of the guy with a staff bag and MP-69s that can't even get a single ball down range in the air or near the target, fine. But really? Attacking a guy because you don't like his clothes? I think a lot of ya'll are the ones who need to grow up.
