Editor Review: Mizuno MP-64 Irons

J13

Recommended Posts

I went to test these out at the store. I'm a 12 handicapper and admittedly I do not hit the ball sweet all the time. If anything I miss more towards the toe. But I was very keen on the looks (and didn't like the diamond back of the 63). I like the blade look and was hoping for a blade look and feel but with a transitional forgiveness. Alas it is not to be. I was so keen on this set but unless you hit it center all the time its not for a non-single handicapper. I tested the 6 iron gainst an AP2 6 iron. The dispersion on the AP2 was far tighter. You can feel the mishits on the 64s. Less on the AP2.

Too bad Mizuno decided no new MPs for lefties this time. In fact, they stopped making the MP53 and MP68, the other lefty options besides the MP59.

Ping, Titleist, even Cleveland introduce the major new irons in both dexterity. Trying out the 588CB right now...
[/quote]

agree the 588cb's look nice. Lefties get the short end of the stick far too often. I"m actually left handed but play golf right handed and I"m thankful for that as choices are limited in golf.

Great review and pictures, thanks. I was able to demo a 64 with Matrix Program 130 and it felt amazing. Looked, felt, and played excellent (on the Flightscope, haha). If I decide to leave my current irons, these would be close to the top of the list of potential replacements.

Haven't hit the Matrix shafts yet but I'd like to. I just wonder how long before all irons have graphite shafts. Things would start getting crazy expensive. haha

Thanks, they just keep getting better. Now if only I can dial in the driver as the last few rounds put the mp 64's through their paces from some bad lies !

Definitely out of my price range with the Programs, or even new for that matter. I'm prob just going to wait it out and pick up a set on the BST next spring. :D

Great review!
Curious if you have used the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer and what your numbers were including speed.

Admittedly - I've been back at least twenty times to check on this thread and your findings! Mizuno has hit the spot with the 2013 product line!

Do yourself of favor and go demo them, preferably outside. Your decision will be made for you.

I have only great things to say about this set of irons. As a long time
player of Mizuno irons, the MP64's rate as high as any of Mizuno's
previous models. I liken this model as somewhere between the MP 62.s
and the MP 68's !! They have a winner here !! But then again, I am a Mizuno fan !!!

Great write up....really enjoyed it!

I'm going to pick a set up. Also, if anyone's interested Golfsmith is giving an extra $100 trade in credit on the new lineup until the end of the month.

Depends on how you define forgiveness but now that I"ve played 10 or so rounds the best part of them is the distance control. They are very predictable which is IMO what golf is about. ALso they feel 10x's better then the 58's

The MP 64's are fantastic !! The workability of these irons are amazing !!
Within eight rounds of play, I was dialed in on distance, I also saw some wonderful
flighting of the ball. These irons deliver for me !! Thanks Mizuno, I am extremely
SATISFIED !!!

Great review...pushed me over the edge. I'm now anxiously awaiting the arrival of my MP-64 (5i-9i).

As for me, I'm pretty new to the game, but a natural athlete and have become obsessed in the short time I've played.

In a perhaps over zealous move, I swapped my beginner irons (huge cavities) for a set of Titleist 710 MB blades (got a deal on eBay so i figured I'd give them a shot). After a so-so day at the range with these, I decided I'd gotten ahead of myself, and visited a golfsmith where the rep ultimately suggested I try the mp64. After testing a few different shafts and hitting balls for 20 mins I was sold (went with the standard DG S300).

Now I'm looking forward to comparing the MP64's to the MB blades. It's funny, I'd actually listed the blades on eBay, but after hitting them again this weekend decided to hold off because I was actually really liking them! Still, I think the mizzys will be more satisfying (soft) and more forgiving. I'm hoping that the fact that I can hit the MB blades (at least on a good day!) indicates that the MP64's aren't out of my league in terms of ball striking.

Question for J13 - Long Irons / Hybrids:

It sounds like you share my lukewarm feelings toward hybrids.

Filling the space between driver and 5 iron, I currently have two Adams a12 pro hybrids (18* and 23*) along with an Adams XTD (14.5*) 3-wood. These hybrids have been my favorite so far, but I still don't like hitting them nearly as much as my 5 iron.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on, say, the H-4 long irons and/or other options for filling the gaps between driver and 5i.

The 64 long irons aren't that difficult to hit if your a solid ball striker. BUT a great combo set would be H4 3 and 4 irons. I haven't hit the H4's yet so I don't have much more info

First set of Mizzys for me. Went 5-P with C taper stiff. Ordered an H4 4 iron and am still waiting. 15 rounds in and I can say these are the best irons I have owned. Feel, distance/contro, trajectory,workability,- its all here! My ball sticking has improved with these. I play to a 6hcp. Shot peRsonal best 74 today with the 64s
