Will Tiger be the next Hogan?

Recommended Posts

When people think of the perfect swing or the starter of the modern swing, they think of Hogan. Now think about this, 50 years from now, do you think people will try to copy the swing of Tiger? Will the Tiger Swing be the next modern swing? I know that Tiger's swing is very similar to Hogan's right now, but it's not the same. So will there be a Forum in Golfwrx in 50 years in the insturction section that is called "Tigers Heroes". Let me hear your ideas. Agree or Disagree; Or think of some other pro, people will try to copy. This could be fun. :D

In the sense that people will study him and copy him like Hogan, yes, but not as much. He still can't hit driver when it matters, like he used to be able too. So he won't be considered a great ball striker like Hogan is.

FWIW, I'm a HUGE Tiger fan, I just wish he'd stop with some of the funny business he's doing (standing too hunched, and stall jumping mainly). His hands are way too low at address IMO (and compared to where he was from 1994-2010).
2000 version was best IMO. The only similarity between Hogan and the post 2010 Tiger is they are both famous for being in a car crash. The biggest difference is that Hogan was crush physically, Tiger mentally.

No. There was never a TV show by the same to use as word play.
But, more seriously, I think there are significant differences between the two swings. Results would be the main similarity.
It also seems like there are a number of players on Tour, who more closely resemble Tiger than Hogan. So, it's not terribly unique.

"He won't be considered a great ball striker"

74 wins and he's not a great ball striker? Not so sure I can agree with you. Not looking to debate this either, but to call who will undoubtedly go down as the greatest to ever play the game a bad ball striker doesn't make sense to me. Like him or not.

Regardless of Tiger's record (now and in the future), I don't think that he would have the same mystique as Hogan has. It's more about what is/was known about Hogan. Times are different and we know all about all the warts and quirks of Tiger (and any 'star' figure) which few if, anyone really knew about Hogan. People just didn't know much and as time went on, you still really didn't know much and the 'romanticism' of Hogan grew. Tiger will never have that. Fifty years from now, I might be proven wrong, but I hope to be long dead by then so I won't care. :)

In 50 years they'll still be studying Hogan. Tiger will instead be remembered similar to the way Jack is remembered. IMO
Now that I think about it, makes sense. Jack doesn't get the same hoopla and following as Hogan.

And besides, the "Eldrick Tont Woods Swing Project" doesn't have the same ring to it ;)

Outside of this site, is hogan revered everywhere? Not trolling, just asking. I feel like most people I know and play with couldn't pick hogan out of a line up.

For an apples to apples comparison of their ballstriking, wouldn't it be more fair to look at Tiger from 3 wood down? Not sure if anyone in history has been better than Tiger from 3 wood to PW. I wouldn't be surprised if Hogan would have similar trouble keeping the modern driver and ball in the fairway while hitting it far enough to compete every time he tees it up.

Anyway, I think there is a very good chance simply because of the wealth of swing footage on Tiger.

I guess my avatar gives away my vote. IMHO, though they may be the winningest players ever, Jack hasn't had (and Tiger won't have) the impact in terms of swing technique, golf instruction or mystique (which Socrates addressed perfectly upthread) of Ben Hogan. As a musician, It's like Hogan is the Beatles, Jack is the Stones and Tiger is U2; all are legendary but one stands alone above the others.

Byron's Babies Swing Forum
Greg's Girls Swing Forum
Sir Nick's Knockers Swing Forum
so many future possibilities.
semi-seriously: there is no Jack forum because its a swing type he did so well all the others copied him, and it died with him, because its just too hard to do.
the Greg Norman swing is incredibly under-rated and ignored, I predict a comeback from Greg.

I'd like to add to the above my deep respect for Jack's "Golf My Way", which has been the playbook for countless golfers around she world. Another vital contribution of Jack's is his world-wide evangelization of the game via his course design work.

Not a chance. The main reason Hogan is so copied is because he was the first player of high level fame to actually write an instruction book about the golf swing. Jack's book was more about strategy so there was less swing mechanics to copy. Tiger's got a couple of books out there already and no one even talks about them. Also, he's changed his swing so much that it's hard to even define what his swing legacy would even be.

Hopefully people will study Tiger's legacy for his strategy, his competitiveness, his killer attitude, etc. and not get all caught up in his swing. clearly his swing is not what makes him great as he seems to feel the need to change it every 15 minutes...

Hogan was special, he did it his own way and was a family man who didnt spit and curse his way around a course so its The Hawk for me.
No, Hogan just walked and ignored everyone and everything around him. To the point that he failed to notice when a playing partner made a hole-in-one.
