Will Tiger be the next Hogan?
Does anyone know how long Hogan played his driver? Didn't most pros use something in the 43 inch range (really more comparable to the modern 3 wood)?

And wouldn't that help to explain why driving accuracy leaders from the persimmon days would hit over 80% of their fairways, whereas now they hit closer to 70% despite having a much, much more forgiving clubhead?
FWIW...via Google, one source who examined his clubs @ the USGA Museum in Far Hills NJ has Hogan's driver length @ 43.5", two others listed it @ 43.25", and a fourth lists it as 42.5".

I use to think modern players were better than the oldies, but after Merion this year I'm starting to reconsider.

If your think about Hogan, Trevino, Nichlaus with persimmon clubs, blades, spiny balata balls and less then perfect greens doing better than most of the field this year, it's impossible to not start wondering.

Would be awesome if they did that. I think Tiger would be even better with the old stuff.
It would be very very cool.

I carry a persimmon driver with me at all times. If it's a tight fairway that requires accuracy there's no way I'm using a modern driver. The old stuff is great.

Tiger will eventually be recognized as the greatest golfer of all time. For this reason, and because he won majors with 3 different swings, he will become the most analyzed and scrutinized golfer. The cult of Hogan will fade away, as the cult of Tiger grows.
I disagree with this a bit...at least in the ballstriking sense of Hogan's Legacy.

While Tiger's record is already better than Hogan's...I think the greatest players still say without question that Hogan was a better ballstriker.

I think Tiger is going to be a very interesting case because of how he changed his swing and all the things that have happened with him.
But if Tiger himself and Jack Nicklaus say without question that Hogan hit the ball better, that will still be enough for lots of people.

It would be similar to if a guy like Jason Dufner came out and now until he retired won 6-8 majors...including 3 in a year...that would def get people's attention.

I do think, however, that if Tiger goes on a Major tear and is able to win 5+ then it could very well be that people will then consider Tiger a better ballstriker.

It always surprises that people don't talk more about Jack's ballstriking. Surely the guy hit the ball fairly well to win so many freakin' majors and finish second so often in them as well.

Hogan seemed to win more majors as he got older; where Tiger is a lull at the moment.
True. Hogan was a late bloomer at golf. Also, he skipped a lot of British Opens because of the travel and scheduling conflicts with the PGA. We can only imagine how many more Majors Hogan would have won if he had played in more of them and hadn't almost died in that car accident. The guy was one of a kind.

I agreed, but only to being a Name in the game. As we all know their are many facets of the game. We know Hogan as the perfect swing and as a strategist of the golf course and one of the best comeback stories. Tiger will be known for having the best short-game and being clutch like Nicklaus, winning a U.S. Open on one leg and having a Bill Clinton moment. Tiger dominated/(-ing?) the game, much like the greats before him. How else do we know him as Tiger and not Eldrick?

Tembolo makes a good point. Nicklaus is never mentioned as a great ballstriker, but he didn't win with smoke and mirrors.
What do you mean smoke and mirrors? How did tiger and/or hogan win with smoke and mirrors?

Unless you meant to say pork and beef.

Tembolo, I think you misunderstood my post. Hogan is regarded as THE ballstriker, the jury is still out to some extent on Tiger. My point is that Nicklaus is never mentioned as a great ballstriker, yet he won everything. Smoke and mirrors is a reference to illusion, not to say anything about either Hogan or Tiger, but to reinforce the notion that Jack was a great ballstriker.

Lee Trevino mentions how Nicklaus had distance and would just separate himself from the field. He said "It's a great feeling knowing you can overpower par 5s. You're 2-3 under before the round starts." I think that and in combination with distance is you hit the ball incredibly high with the other clubs meaning it doesn't matter pin placement when you can set the ball down with little to no release compared to a accurate short knocker like Trevino and Furyk. Also, Tiger and Jack are insanely talented putters, add that and they win the greatest (complete) golfer award.

For accuracy, however, there's a handful of strikers out there but just lack the distance. Hogan had both. That's why he's the greatest.

I know it's a reference to illusion. But where's the illusion? You aren't making a reference to hogan or tiger...then to what? What/who is the illusion reference a reference to? I'm still hoping beef and pork.

By all accounts he hit the ball very low though.

That may be true, but Nicklaus said it was Hogan, "easily".

Yes he did! How scary is that? Without a doubt he still takes Hogan. And that's with the crappier equipment.

When people think of the perfect swing or the starter of the modern swing, they think of Hogan. Now think about this, 50 years from now, do you think people will try to copy the swing of Tiger? Will the Tiger Swing be the next modern swing? I know that Tiger's swing is very similar to Hogan's right now, but it's not the same. So will there be a Forum in Golfwrx in 50 years in the insturction section that is called "Tigers Heroes". Let me hear your ideas. Agree or Disagree; Or think of some other pro, people will try to copy. This could be fun. :D

I can certainly see future generations studying Tiger, but maybe not the same way as Hogan. Hogan was revered for his swing and ball striking, Tiger will be remembered for his golf shots on the course. I can see videos more like the Seve videos, compilations of Tigers miraculous shots to win majors. Hogan was a case study in golf swing mechanics, Tiger is more of a highlights reel.

Is it too late for Tiger to master/own his swing and go on another one of his runs? What if he turns 40 or whatever and has a new baby with the skier girl and that lights a fire under his butt and then goes all out Hogan terminator and wins 3 majors in a row?

The only two things I would ever teach someone that Tiger does:
1. His putting set up
2. To never stop trying to improve and learn.

Aside from that, his moves are his for his body. Without the same flexibility, strength and determination levels it would be a pointless quest. How about listening to Arnold Palmer and "swing your swing!!!

No way. Tiger is (was?) an amazing player... Greatest mind, perhaps, to play the game ever. Great putter and scrambler. Not the best swing/ballstriker though.
