Building a solid 10 year old equipment bag, what would you game?

Recommended Posts

Came up with the idea of an off season project to put together a bag of gear that is at least 10 years old. Kinda getting sick of the ads every year saying its the greatest thing ever and you should drop another $500 on this driver, $1000 on these irons and another $300 on such and such a putter. I understand the ho'ing that some go for, as I've done it and moved on to saving my money for better golf trips rather then making others profits.

Talking clubs only, what would you game that was released in 2002/03? Do you honestly think you would play worse with a bag of 10 year old clubs vs. what you currently game. My bag if I can get it put together would look like: All price's taken from current eBay auctions as an avg. Could possibly get better in the BST.

Driver - Titleist 983K - $25-$40+

Fairway Woods - Titlist 980F, strong 3 and 5 wood - $10-$40+ ea

Hybrids - TM rescue Mid TP - $1-$40+

Irons - Mizzy MP-30 - $150-$225+

Wedges - TM RAC FE203's or some old Vokey O/C's - $25-$40+ ea

Putter - Odyssey 2-Ball Blade - $60

Total bag price - just over $500

I like your choices there, but I would put in either a set of Titleist 690mbs / Hogan Apex Plus / or Tommy Armour 845 Silverback MBs in there. Along with some Cleveland 588 wedges and a Ping Anser 2 putter.

I actually dont think it would make much difference in my game.

There is a good amount to choose from for those 2 years, but again, do you think you would play/score worse with this gear vs. current gamers.

Love it, almost 100 views and get only a couple responses. Ask a stupid question that has been asked many times and you get flooded. Ask an "un" WRX question and they close in disgust!!! "Pfft, play with 10 year old equipment"...

I don't think that set would make any difference to my score, other than maybe the driver and the hybrids. You can much more forgiving 5 year old driver for close to same price, no reason to use anything that old anymore , unless its for nostalgia . As for the hybrids, i always hated the TM hybrids but thats just personal preference I'd buy Nickents.

Bag Setup - changes too often to bother listing

Are you going for the nostalgic throwback bag of 10 year old clubs, or the "people will want to hide under their head covers when they see me coming because I must be a real player" bag of 10 year old clubs? If you're going for the latter, then I would say definitely go for some Titleist 681s or Mizzy MP-33/14s and a beat-up, old Ping Anser putter. Either way, you gotta have some 588 RTGs in there!

Not looking for anyone to fear anything, you still have to play what you have in the bag and put your score down on the card each day. More looking for personal preference, and if you could actually play/score worse then you currently do given that these are supposedly inferior clubs by today's OEM marketing standards. I work at a private club, so find it interesting to hear people rational for why they use their gear vs. what they had previously. Usually its just a keeping up with the Jones' approach rather then a good reason for upgrading.

No, I don't think my scores would change, because my bag would basically be exactly the same (give or take a year) as it is now, minus the driver.

I like the thread! This was exactly my approach when I returned to the game after some time off. I just bought the irons I wanted back then and reshafted / regripped.

To play along, though, Hogan Apex (pick the series you like most) or Cleveland TA3 irons and same brand wedges. Titleist 975 series of titanium driver / woods or Callaway Steelhead or Great Big Bertha will also get the job done. A modest Ping Anser series putter is still capable of finding the hole. I would, though, get a new modern bag.

No question asked, the BEST driver you can bag from that time frame is the SMT DB455, it set the world long drive record at the time and was one of the first to push out to the "giant" size of 455cc, it's uber forgiving and as long as it gets, I still bagged one last year for 98% of my rounds, its still in production, that tells you it was something special right there.

I'd think Apex edge irons

V-steel 3/5 wood

588 wedges

Ping putter of choice.

Your bag would be every bit as forgiving as today's equipment, just as long (save for iron loft) and scoring would be no different.

Interesting thread. I don't have a problem with a 10 year old bag and since I play with a lot of 10 year old clubs today I don't think I would play any worse. I am thinking better since drivers were shorter then and as a result would have more control.

My bag would be:

Driver: Cleveland Launcher driver
Fairway woods: Sonartec SS-02
Irons: Cleveland TA-7 Tours
Wedges: Vokeys or Cleveland 588s
Putter: Not sure about the putter, but there were lots of great ones.

Reflecting back on my own bag 10 years ago...

I was playing a TM R580 driver and loved it.
I bought a set of Cobra SSi oversized irons - first ever fitted for.
I had a full set of the original Cleveland wedges.
And I putted with an original VooDoo.

An even more interesting question is whatever happened to those clubs you had 10 years ago?

I sold my driver to a buddy for $100 when it was two years old. I had kept it pristine; always babied it by covering it between shots and keeping it clean. Let's just say he didn't and that last time I played with him, about a year ago, he still had it. But it was beat all to hades. I hate seeing people abuse good stuff like that.

The irons were sold to another buddy about 2 years ago now. Again I managed to get $100 for them. He still has them and still plays them. When I played with him about 4 months ago I took a swing with the old 6 iron and it still felt friendly and famliar.

The wedges were replaced last year with a full set of new Clevelands and I sold the old ones on eBay. Managed to get $140 for the set of three.

And the VooDoo (original Never Compromise) is still in my golf closet. I still, on occasion, pull it out of retirement and game it. But I love my Backstryke too much to replace it anytime soon so usually the VooDoo is just visiting and is not in the bag to stay. Someone offered me $50 for it last year but because it was an anniversary present back in 2003 there is no way I am going to part with it.

Here's my current bag. I think it stacks up to the 10 year old challenge with the exception of the driver which was swapped a couple of month ago for a 975J that I had in the bag for about 8 years. I have the i3 irons in both Blade and O-size styles.

My set of Maxfli Revolutions are another great iron set from 10-15 years ago.
