Kudos to Pat Perez - fixing his mind

Recommended Posts

It looks like the man is getting his head together and his game is paying dividends. He has always had anger issues and wears his emotions on sleeve. I was always to first to bash him and personally couldn't stand watching him play or give interviews.

I'm a fan of any man who tackles his demons. And his are always right there. He is Top 10 after 2 rounds at the Sony. Cool article in Golf Digest:

Pat Perez, mellow? He's trying and it's working

I am PP fan, but gotta tell you I love to see him lose it on the course. Same reason I like Sergio, he is raw and real. Tired of seeing the Kuchars of the world all smiley and stupid.

Great, he's turning into another boring tour pro.

I agree that it's definitely fun to watch golfers show a little emotion on the course, but getting that worked up is just so mentally (and sometimes physically) draining, that it can have some negative effects on your game. When you're out there playing for your livelihood, you're trying to put up the best number you can, not entertain the most people.

Stupid is a harsh way to describe a guy with a management degree from Georgia Tech.

Goober would be more fitting.

Do you find Oosthuizen and McIlroy tiring as well?

No offense but PP had outstanding issues. I don't mind a little emotion and a NASCAR crash from time to time - but he was actually acting like a d-bag and a baby at times. I think it was affecting his life in other ways too.

Heck Bill Haas threw his putter and kicked his golfbag HARD at the Hyundai in Hawaii last week - they all get fired up. I've seen Stricker and Lorena Ochoa stick a wedge 8 inches deep into the soil in anger - the same week. PP was an outstanding jerk at times. I'm glad he is trying to self help. And I'm glad he is havng success.

its fun to watch an emotional guy go nuts from time to time but after a while it crosses the line. it must be a bit of a distraction for his playing partners as well. he seems to be in the mix a good amount of times on thursday thru saturday but explodes before he can be a factor on sunday. he certainly has the talent to win. lets see how he does . good luck PP

Didnt have a negative effect on Mcenroes tennis career. Tiger isnt exactly known for his calmness after bad shots either. If you have that personality you have to go with it and let off some steam or the pressure will build and really get to you.

I'm not saying that he should strive to become some cold, emotionless robot. I'm totally cool with guys blowing off a little steam, but there is a point of diminishing returns, so to speak, where it negatively affects his play. These guys do everything they can to personally play their best golf, so the fact that he decided to change clearly signifies that he thought it was negatively affecting his game. And I'm sure if he felt punching his caddie in the gut every time he hit a bad shot would allow him to put up the best number, he would do that.

Playing against the best players in the world is hard enough. I'm sure he's not doing anything to make it even more difficult for himself.

I was watching the final round yesterday and was watching PP for evidence of being a hothead - the only thing I saw was when his ball was over near a short OB concrete wall and he told the camera man something like "step back" but that was certainly within his right. I'm not sure what he said because it was more of a gesture - but the NBC /GC cameraman wasn't really near him.

Whatever - he gets a pass. Probably nothing. He recovered well. Got a $146k paycheck

There is nothing stupid about Matt Kuchar's smile.

Perez's career earnings ~$13 million. Kuchar's career earnings ~$22 million-- and who do you think makes more on endorsements? I have a guess.

now all pp needs to work on is his weight. the pga tour has him at 190 lbs.... yeah maybe when he joined the tour 11 years ago.

i love the guy for all the reasons he's trying to change. i hope he doesn't lose his fire, just the one in his tummy. too young to be out of shape patty.

side note: they have ryan moore at 170 lbs. :WTF:

your argument is stupid.

what's with the career earnings stat? he's made $9Mil more because of his smile? he's made more money because he's a better golfer. same reason he makes more on endorsements.... he's in contention and on tv.

it has nothing to do with kuchar's smile, which yes, is really stupid looking.

"type of smile" is not one of the boxes that the sponsors check off when they sign a guy.

We shall see but I am of the thought that a tiger doesn't change his stripes. The guy has talent but is one of the biggest jerks on tour.

From the article it sounds as though he thinks "positive thinking" will help his golf game, I don't get the impression that simply not treating people like crap is one of his motivations.

Anyone who saw his antics at the Reno Tahoe open a few years back can't possibly argue that this guy doesn't act like a ****** on the course. I fully expect it to continue. Maybe I am too cynical and he will surprise me. But I doubt it.
