2013 City Of Phoenix Amateur Championship

Every year this rolls around, I find an excuse on why I can't play. Money, playing terrible, last year was the birth of my daughter. This year might be the one.

Looks like they changed the format a bit,as its taking place in one weekend instead of 2 separate weekends, 3 rounds instead of 4, cheaper entry fee as well.

$160 gets you 3 tournament rounds, prizes, awards etc.

Friday Mar 22nd @ Maryvale

Sat Mar 23rd @ Aguila

Sun Mar 24th @ Papago.

I think this works better than the cave creek/encanto/maryvale/aguila, especially since the course set ups for the championship flights can be toughened as the weekend goes on. Aguila has some tee boxes that Ive never seen open, and papago, well, you know.

Anyone thinking about doing it this year?

After been wanting to and thinking about doing it for several years, I have decided to start playing in some local amateur tournaments this year after joining the mens club at Ken McDonald last year and winning the club championship,

I played in the Tempe Amateur last week, I am planning on playing in this as well. Also considering the Mesa City Championship at Dobson and also the AZ stroke play championship qualifier at TPC Champions. The AZ Publinks is a little expensive at $250 for the fee.

[s]Looks like I am out. Have fun guys[/s]

I called Encanto and they said if i start my handicap now that I will be good to go. Going to join the mens club at Coldwater $85 a year and includes an USGA handicap. Does anyone know of a cheaper option?

The format was two days of qualifying and the top 8 goes through 3 rounds of match play. I shot 69 during the championship match to win 1 up.

It's handicapped. You will be playing against people of your same skill level.

It is flighted by Handicap....so you will be playing against Sand Baggers of supreme skill level and low moral character. Have fun when a 10 handicap shoots 212 to win your flight.

I've never participated in one of these, but I'm sure this stuff occurs. Don't really get it myself, have never understood cheating. Not much different than stealing. I've played in some best ball tournaments and have seen a 4some of hacks turn in a card under par. Golf can show a person's true colors.

I'm a 5.6 right now and I couldn't even come close to beating some of those guys in that Handicap group. Unless those are their scores after handicap.

Your scores are not adjusted in these competitions. Those are their Gross Scores.

Having played in a lot of tournaments (both at the CC level and at the non CC affiliated level) I will never play in a tournament that aloows outside handicapping to dictate anything about it. You are basically donating money, prizes etc. to whomever the biggest cheater in your flight is.

In a quality CC the members/pros tend to self police these Handicap aberrations. In a city wide tournament there is very little accountability for this type of thing (i.e. you aren't going to see the guy every day for the next year). Basically if you are not playing in the championship flight to try to win it overall you ought simply be doing it for the experience, because I can guarantee that the guy winning your flight is a massive sand bagger.

I unfortunately agree that if you're an honest person not playing in the gross only championship flight, you're simply golfing for an experience and most likely donating to the greatest sandbagger.

My cc where I play splits every tournament entry fee down the middle for gross and net pools. I never touch the net pool even though I have to put in to it. I wish it was different, but a 28yr old in a country club doesnt have any pull with the rules and "the way it's been for decades." Hindsight, the high handicappers are putting in half of their entry fee for the gross pool, but they usually flight it so it doesnt really matter.
