What clubs are Rory McIlroy using and what shafts are in his clubs. Also why did he swith from the black/yellow multicompound to black/white. Do you ever see him going back to the black/yellow. Thank you for your time.

Being one of the few to actually look past the weirdness (I personally thought it looked awesome) and bag your Method Core Concept putter last year, I am drawn to such things whereas a traditional golfer stays far away. I like innovation, a LOT.

That being said, where does the inspiration to create truly new product like the Concept and the new Covert come from? Are you more driven for the need to find new territory in the marketplace or purely from a standpoint of being "different?"

I ask this because it is a common question in art, and it often overlaps more than it separates from companies that are truly trying to improve the game. I see that a lot from you guys and I feel that you're often greatly underrated. Which one would you say drives you more?

Thanks so much for doing this!
TD: "This type of product is something we let the design and science team “free-swing for the fences”. Think of it as a Concept Car. From time to time we will launch products that will be a blend of art and science that are simply different, but always serve a specific scientific purpose. In this case, the Concept line informed how we produced the Drone 2.0 which launches this week, also.

Concepts come from a variety of places within our company. We have a large internal think tank, spend tons of time learning from the athlete and consumers, and we also have a large base of outside consultants to keep things fresh! We relentlessly innovate to improve athletic performance (keeping in mind that it is a Nike Maxim that “If you have a body, you are an athlete), regardless of the sport. If that creates “different”, then it can be a great by-product of the process. The end goal of better performing product is never lost!"
I LOVE that about you guys. Thanks so much for answering my question!!

Maybe I missed it somehow, but did Nike ever state the actual weight of the Covert driver heads? Does anyone know?
No, they did not.

For some reason, Nike, Taylormade, and Callaway completely chose not to release the specs on the driver headweight.

I've asked previously and no response.

Personally, I think it's extremely important information to myself as a consumer when purchasing a club.

Thank you to everyone for submitting such great questions. We wish we could have answered more of them and if time permits over the next few days we will try to get to a few more, no guarantees.

We hope you get out to try the new VR_S Covert line-up, it launches tomorrow in the US, Canada and Europe, next week in Asia.

Time to get back to making golf clubs!

Thank you!

Love the Covert name, and since it is a Covert Q&A here it goes: I'm still a bit skeptical about adjustable clubs. Maybe I'm old school and mentally seem to play better with glued stuff. I really like the look of the new Covert line. How much can this adjustable sleeve, which seems the be all say all, help the lower hdcp golfer?

I too am also curious about ordering at a shorter length and proper SW for my game. Last question, when testing obviously you don't have competitors new stuff to compare against, so what drives the performance factor? Is barely beating last years stuff good enough for your design team?

Thanks, can't wait to try clubs AND ball.

edit: Our Nike rep told me goal is to have TW switch by Masters. Also told me custom length was fine to order but did not confirm SW...hence the question again above!
TD: "Perfect case in point on the adjustable sleeve...Nike is located just outside of Portland, OR, of which is quite wet this time of year. My Covert driver is set at 11.5 while in Oregon. Trying to achieve max carry as every drive has -6” roll out. We had an opportunity to play in FL during PGA Show week, I was able to move the same driver to 9.5 to get more optimum launch conditions for a faster course. Best part is that I did that without changing my face angle!

PH: "We take swingweight requests and we'll hit them whenever possible, but we can't guarantee we can hit a swingweight as there are a multitude of component variables (length, shaft weight, shaft balance point, grip weight, etc.) that cannot always be offset with the range of headweight control available. In the VR_S Covert Drivers, we control headweight through the use of Hot Melt. As a general rule we use between 2 and 6 grams of hot melt to control headweight, however, we’ll use up to 10 grams if required to hit a requested swingweight with a warning to the customer that, beyond 6 grams, the impact sound will become increasingly muted."
Hi Nike Golf,

If you could answer the following question for me it would be greatly appreciated:
I have seen your new seasons gear and was suitable impressed. I was going to put and order for apparel, shoes, balls and hardware until I found out you do not offer custom fitting options to us in New Zealand. This is shocking. Why spend all the $$$ on Rory when your distribution is beyond shocking. No point in making gear which can compete with all the other manufacturers when you do not offer a fitting system or even the chance to order custom irons. I can tell you it has cost you probably something near to $200,000 minimum as a buying group I am part of shelved our idea of being the first in the country to REALLY stock Nike and the full compliment of apparel that goes with it.

Really- if you want to compete and throw money around I suggest making your distribution and options available to the consumer otherwise you will never be taken seriously as a golf brand and you can stick to making shoes and shirts
TD: "This is an interesting insight and has been forwarded to the people that can evaluate and help!"
I really hope they can do something about it. I just got some ordering details from a US retailer that had what I understand is the same documentation that US buyers have had all along... So much information and fitting advice.. Australia NEEDS this support. Come on Nike... just do it.

I was lucky enough to be a part of the 2013 20XI and 20XI-X preview for GolfWRX. I have played the original 20XI-X for about a year, played the Tour One D before that, and began my Nike Golf experience with the One Black. I have always found your premium low spin ball to be a great fit for my game, so thank you for helping me beat out my buddies a few more times and lowering my handicap.

I would like to know the thought process behind Nike's unique dimple pattern. With my eyes it seems like there is a pretty strong variation of dimple size an pattern on the X models. When comparing to competitors it is at the very least unique. How does the design of Nike change preformance?

Thanks,

Adam

Do you feel snubbed by GOLF DIGEST and the HOT LIST? It seems as if the members on WRX are excited about your product than the magazine... How much weight do you put into their feedback?
TD: "We have tons of respect for the process and objectivity that goes into the Hot List. The relentless work they do for their readership is commendable. “Snubbed” is not an accurate term as we received gold medals for both drivers. On the other hand, we feel this is by far the most innovative product that has come out in many years, let alone this one."
i agree - but to have the r1 as the category leader in innovation is a snub. the covert is truly out side the box innovation!

Golf Digest Hot List is a joke in my opinion. We should match their list with the amount of advertising dollars spent with their magazine. I'd bet there's a strong correlation!

Have you guys ever tried considering combining tech from current and past drivers? Like maybe a combination of the compression channel from the VR Pro driver and the cavity back of the new VR_S Covert driver? In my mind combining the tech you guys have would be give awesome results, but at the same time I'm not the expert.

Hello Nike Golf, Thanks for your time today.

I asked this question to the Callaway guys and they decided to sort of fluff it off so I will ask for your opinion on this. I would like to know why the stock driver shafts keep getting longer and longer for the amateur, while the top players in the sport play on average a 44.5 inch driver. The average golfer can't hit the sweetspot effectively with these longer drivers and they would almost all be better off with much shorter driver shafts. Even though swingspeed will likely be reduced, I believe that distance will increase since they will be hitting the sweetspot more often.

Thanks.
TD: "Launch Monitors, the greatest invention for fitting in the past 10 years. With good comes the bad. Our studies show that MOST (not all) consumers that are fit on a LM purchase based on the optimum distance number. Most purchases are based on distance for the general consumer population. For those that are looking for control first, we offer the lesser lengths through custom."

Edit: Also would you say the coverts are more game improvement or more like a players cavity back?

There's been a couple posts on here about how the Covert drivers isn't that new because of the old Mac Powersphere driver. Obviously the exact tech is much different, but how much does the older designs influence current and future Nike designs? Do you ever look at older "out there" club designs as a way to be inspired?
TD: "The Mac Powersphere is a completely different golf club that had a cavity in the center of the sole. The concept was that this sphere created ball speed some how. The club was still hollow. The Covert High Speed Cavity Back is truly a cavity that goes to the crown. Completely different concepts and end benefit. Our staff has a combined hundreds of years of golf industry experience, so to say we do not look at the past would be like dismissing all of the work we all prior to and with our fantastic company!"
Thanks for the reply, don't shoot the messenger! Look forward to getting my Covert driver soon to test against my VR_S that has treated me so well.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to answer all of the questions!

This is more of a markenting question. I am wondering what the thought process is and the steps that are taken in acquiring players such as Rory, Nick Watney and Kyle Stanley. It obviously doens't happen overnight! Great moves by the way!

Looking forward to your response!
