Rackmageddon -- a Hogan iron story

Recommended Posts

Last night I promised Tim to start posting some Hogan pics, so better late than never, we begin. Here, in their hallowed spot next to the cleaning supplies in the basement, is a very happy Hogan place:

A little background...

About this time last year, I'd set some gig tip money aside with the vague intention of getting fitted for new sticks. For a change, I dug out the AMF Voit blade 7-iron from my 1st set of garage sale non-matching clubs. With it being winter & no one on my favorite outdoor practice area but me, I could flail away in private. Swinging that club took me somewhere, back & forward at the same time; blademania. A 3-hcp golfer / scratch tenor sax player friend of mine used to play Hogan Apexes, so I started doing some research & picked up a cheap set of Apex II white cameos off the bay. Many months later, this is the result (mostly in chronological order):

wow, one year and many bucks later. I can't wait to see what you will have a year from now!! I have been collecting Hogan for about 15 years at a much slower pace and can tell you it is very addicting trying to get them all.

1. Hogan Personal (80s ltd. edition, #0617/1000): 3 - E

Even though they're not the oldest, this reissue was built to the specs of the original Personals so I bumped them to the front of the line. Got these on the bay for a very good price, partly because the original owner swapped out the Apex shafts for DG S300s.

3 up to 6 on the left, 7 to E on the right; note the (no longer functional) shaft pins.

You need one of these, if you don't have one yet. It'll go great with any one of those sets. (owned by a friend of mine, they have never touched a ball).
Thanks for posting those, freddiec. I've got an unhit Apex 3-wood (from when Hogan was subcontracting them out to Louisville Golf) in the corner of my office, so I know how your friend feels. And I'm lucky enough to have a '53 commemorative driver that was owned by John Mahaffey. One day the woods will get their camera time!

Man o man, I would love to be able to see them first hand to be really able to take it all in. That storage rack is one impressive unit, like someone posted above, it must weigh a fair bit. Thank you so much for going to the effort of photographing, uploading and posting, I'm sure it is going to be very much appreciated by many, many viewers.

2. Precision "Experimental", ser #S431 (2 - 9)

AFAIK, these are my oldest set of Hogan irons and are prototypes from '54 or '55; was lucky enough to win them in an auction on the bay last year. Original shafts and grips; a bit of rust, but other than that, right out of the time machine.

I forget what the rare, early "boundary lines" that run perpendicular to the grooves along their edges are called and don't know if they made it into the release, but this set's got them:

And finally, the less-worn 2-iron:

Enjoy; I know there's plenty more to learn about this set and others like it, so feel free. . .
