There is no doubt that this buffonery is diminishing the coverage for the majority of the target TV audience. That being the case the PGA tour would be wise to stop it or limit it to Phoenix or the practice rounds so all the DB's can have their day. If the mics picked up that kind of thing at NFL games and it disrupted the commentary-they would fix the problem in a second-too much money invested in the viewing experience and tv rights. People who bring signs or shirts not in the taste of the NFL are escorted out. The PGA tour looks bush league with its tolerance of call in rulings and the inane shouting. The decorum of professional golf is being lost over the "grow the game" mantra.
We can thank Mr Woods for this annoying aspect of professional golf, and the PGA Tour did nothing to stop it. Probably too late to do anything about it now.
Please explain.
I have been watching professional golf on TV and in person for almost 40 years, and I can state with certainty that this problem has gotten totally out of hand since the the year 2000. Prior to that, the words "Mashed Potatoes" and "Baba Booey" were never yelled at any golf tournament. Is it a coincidence or is it the arrival of Woods and his animated displays, dances, and fist pumps? I think it is obvious.
Your first comment is ignorant. The last two sentences of your second comment are ignorant. Otherwise, I agree.

I've said it once in this thread and I'll say it again... There is no way to generalize who the yellers are, period. I've seen them generalized as drunken frat boys on more than one occasion, and I can tell you that there are plenty of drunken frat boys that aren't yelling, and plenty of drunken people of all ages at these events. I've seen the yellers generalized as TW fans, and that makes 0 sense. If that were the case, there wouldn't be yelling during other pairings while TW is on the course, because all of his fans would be following TW.

I think most agree that the yelling has become somewhat of an issue. Is it disrupting my enjoyment of watching golf in a very minor way? Sure. Am I going to stop watching because of the yelling? Hell no. Some people need to just settle down and learn some tolerance.

Can we please not attempt to generalize the yellers? It isn't possible and makes you look dumb.

It's fairly easy to generalize the moronic shouters as drunken frat boys simply because no one has said they were at so-and-so tournament and saw some 60 year old man with his wife yell out mashed potatoes. Meanwhile, those who actually have seen these idiots, myself included, can plainly see they are early to late 20's drunken idiots who are either in a fraternity, got kicked out of school while a member of a fraternity, or are simply too dumb to get into a school that has fraternities.

That being said, I don't believe anyone here is accusing all frat guys of acting like their idiotic brethren. After all, even schools like Harvard and Yale have fraternity chapters.

Yes... And only 60-year-old drunks get in a fight at the bowling alley. I know this because I broke one up last week, so it must be true.

The only ignorance displayed here is on your behalf. And your poor attempt at an analogy using bowling simply reinforces the fact that no one has yet chimed in about their first-hand experience of seeing a non-frat boy idiot type screaming their head off at a golf tournament. The impression you give off would lead one to believe that you take offense to the chastising of these idiots simply because you are one yourself or were/are part of a frat and those morons are your brothers.

It is very easy to generalize the shouting idiots because they share several similarities as depicted throughout this 30 page thread and always fall in line with the 20-something, unruly, drunken frat boy stereotype. To think anything different would exude ignorance.

As long as they aren't doing it during the guy's swing who cares? Last I checked, the PGA Tour was a professional sports organization and these guys are professional athletes. Maybe I could understand if people were shouting insults at players or something, but go to a Phillies-Mets game on dollar dog night- you think "mashed potatoes" is bad? Go to an NHL game where a bad call from the ref brings a 20,000-strong chorus of "a**hole!, a**hole!"

I'd like to think most here agree that golf is a sport, or at least that pro golf is. Pro sports have fans who pay money to enjoy themselves. If part of that is yelling something goofy once in a while, who cares? Personally I think the "mashed potatoes" one is hilarious.

^^^^^^^ You obviously never followed Daly in your 40 years of watching.
It might not have been "mashed potatoes" but they were yelling and acting crazy.

Daly definitely brought a very different fan to professional golf. However, Woods elevated the issue and his fans took it to a whole different level, unfortunately. Don't feel like you have to try to defend your hero. He will be just fine without your help. Have a good one, friend, and welcome to the best site on the web.

Daly was one of my must 'must watch golfers', not because of the distance the ball goes, but the smooth turbine-like power of his swing and his touch around the greens..
I watched him at many Open Championships and never heard one indiscretion from the galleries.

On an unrelated note, I was at the Chappelle comedy show last night in Hartford and he walked off the stage after 20 minutes or so due to hecklers and I couldn't help but notice the similarities between the shouting morons at golf tournaments and the idiots that ruined the show for everyone else. It's just too bad professional golfers don't have the luxury of walking off the course while getting paid. Keep your mouth shut at events that call for it.

The problem is that there are players on the adjacent holes as well, so Mister Funny Yeller shouts something after Tiger plays, but it happens to be just before another player was about to play, which results in him starting his whole pre shot routine from scratch, and that results in slowing up play.
