8.5* with 45" shaft is insane. I can't imagine trying to hit my driver with a head half the size.
Why's that? Everyone used to use drivers that were even smaller than this.

It's just a smaller head driver. "Way back" in the early to later 90's, all drivers were in this size range. Before then, they were smaller

Even if I like the idea of the club, is it really the best of times to put it into play at the Masters for the first time? It's not like it's just a slightly different driver, it seems very different to what he's been playing over the last decade or so. Guess he just needs the confidence of the honeymoon phase. He tends to play good with that.

Ok, so small drivers and iron-like utility clubs instead of bigger hybrids. Next, I predict going back to blade putters and muscleback irons. Shafts can be lighter and higher launching now, musclebacks will be easy for even the low ball hitters to get up in the air now with the right shaft. I like it! Golf equipment is going back to sexy guys!

Were they actually that long? I thought they were about 43-43.5" back then?

Plenty of 45"-46" driver shafts in the 90's.

Persimmon drivers with steel shafts, and the early generation metal wood drivers were 43 inches. The original BIg Bertha , the BB WARBIRD and Burner bubble were 44 inches and near 200ccs. The 1st gen titanium drivers like the GREAT BIG BERTHA , and Taylor TI BUbble were 45 inches total club length. These heads were 250ccs. The 2nd GEN titanium drivers such as the Biggest BIg Bertha were near 300ccs and the retail club length was 46 inches. IF you grew up playing Persimmon drivers as I did the 250CC GBB was huge.

Wow, how high is he teeing it?

Just imagine if these came to market. eBay would be awash within a matter of days with "used only for two rounds" Phrankenwoods.

the other players must think Phil is out of his mind...

talked to a bud last night who just returned from Mon and Tues practice rounds at the Masters, where he followed Phil's group. On at least one hole, Phil was past Rickie Fowler's driver with the Phrankenwood. and it is all STEEL!!?!?!

WOW. I have hit my XHOT fw a very long way but that is really long.

It's steel because they don't need titanium to get the COR up anymore. With the internal standing wave tech they can keep the head smaller with a heavier weight instead of titanium although incredibly strong is also very light. Not what you'd want in a smaller head like this. The STEELHEAD BABY!!!!!

I think the only pic floating around is of the sole.

I haven't seen a great picture, but I've read it's glossy black.

since the 3w cor is not regulated, what is the minimum size of a driver that must meet the cor requriements?
I'm pretty sure there is a limit on COR for all clubs. The first X Hot fairway wood they sent in was wicked illegal. I'm drawing a blank on the other measurement used for "springyness" but the limit is around 254 or something like that. The first fairway wood the tested out was somewhere north of 300 I believe. Whatever that would equate to in COR would've been well over .830 and thus illegal. Those aren't in production.

CT. Characteristic Time. COR is inaccurate and hard to measure.

Not sure what the big deal is. It's just a smaller driver. He could've put a 8.5 degree Hawkeye VFT in the bag with a Fubuki and everyone would've flipped as well.

Phil Tinkerson strikes again.

Totally aware of that. But the hype is what I'm referring to. Lowering cc's isn't rocket science here. He wanted a smaller head that would help him work the ball. Not much more to it than that...certainly not a golf world in shock.

What would be really nice,is if this helps inspire a "happy medium", where some of the companies reconsider some smaller driver heads with maxed out technology, say...in the mid 300cc area to low 400's.

I think we're to the point now where if everything was put together just right with the design, look, and tech, that something like this could possibly get some good sales

All this talk about confidence in 460 cc and how hard to hit a "small" driver would be is moronic. It's no harder than hitting a 3 wood which is stupid easy these days. The smaller driver head is all about looks, a smaller head gives the feeling of precision and speed.

A big diver head in my opinion is useless. It looks clunky, slow and I only use a small area of the face anyways. No reason you couldn't get the same results with a smaller head.

It's certainly not a new concept but I think people are getting a kick out of seeing new technology in the smaller heads of yesteryear. I know a lot of people on this board have been waiting for this so I get the excitement.

I compared the 3Deep to a Great Big Bertha 3+ Titanium in the used bin last night, there was a deuce there also and a GBB 8* Titanium driver...the 3Deep and the GBB 3+ were almost identical in size and shape, the Deuce as a touch bigger and the GBB 8* was quite a bit larger.

The 3Deep felt much better at impact than the GGB 3+ for what it is worth. Feel like I could hit either of the 3Deep lofts off the turf with no issue...but will probably go 13* and use it at 43.5" as second driver for short courses and REALLY LONG courses it will be in the bag as the actual 3 wood!

My buds keep saying I am almost as long with the 3 wood (42.5") as I am with my driver(45") and they could be right, and which club do we all tend to hit on tight par 4's where the fairway is a premium..? 3 wood ! I know I am more accurate with my 3 over the driver for sure...so why not try it and see if losing out on anything at all.
