Phil's Phrankenwood: Up-close photos added from Wed. practice round Pg 6

Recommended Posts

All clubs can be tested for CT, or how long the test pendulum stays on the face, which is a more convenient, accurate measurement than COR. But it mostly applies to metalwoods and not so much irons or wedges. The CT limit is 239 µs (microseconds) with a tolerance of 18 µs, effectively making the limit 257 µs. With COR, the limit was about 0.822 with a tolerance of 0.008, making the effective COR limit 0.83 for clubs. There's no loft threshold, or even "number of club" threshold for CT testing (the number at the bottom of the club is just an arbitrary form of identification that has become the modern convention), so whether it's a 17* driver or a 10* "3-wood" (it's only a tiny driver, everybody) or even a 12* iron or hybrid, it can be tested for spring effect. There's only a loft threshold for groove testing, which means that clubs with 25* of loft or greater are tested for conforming grooves. Hope this helps people's misconceptions on whether 3-woods can have higher CT than allowed for drivers.

This is just plain silly.

Let me get this straight. Drivers have more than doubled in size in the past 15 years. The limit is now 460cc, and basically every player on the planet, tour pros included, is playing a driver above 400cc.

And now, Phil Mickelson decides that he wants to put a tiny club with driver loft and a driver length shaft on it, and everyone is drooling over it?!

Come on. Gimme a break! How is having a tiny head on a driver with the same loft and length a good thing? And importantly, how is it a good thing for a non-tour pro?

Hey, I love Phil. I root for him. I'll be shocked. SHOCKED. If this club stays in the bag for a prolonged period of time. There's a reason why large drivers are used by just about everyone.

Best post of the day. Spot on. Easier to get out of trouble when you are hitting it longer.

interesting...black crown.....
Yeah glossy black finish like on the RFE driver and fairway woods. Talk about a beautiful finish on a club! Not that the X-Hot gray is bad, but the black crown on the RFE's - actually the RFE clubs in general - look gorgeous. If I had money, I could see myself sporting an all-Callaway bag... :idhitit:

So Phil has this in the bag instead of the Driver, and then has another fairway wood? Or a driver and this?
He has this as his driver with 8.5* of loft and a 45" shaft, then a regular 13* X-Hot 3Deep as his deep-faced 3-wood.
It's Phil. Nothing will be in the bag all year. He is the closest thing to one of us that plays on tour. He always needs an experiment to satisfy his scientist-side.
I agree that he probably won't keep it in the bag too long, but it's not only because he's the ultimate equipment tinkerer on Tour (even though he is) and he'll find a new toy. It's also because this seems like something of a specialty club for the Masters, just like he's had a Diablo Edge 1 or 2 iron and that wedge-like hybrid in and out of the bag for certain tournaments. This is supposed to spin less so he can hit down on it a bit, draw it and let the ball run out for more distance on some holes, and hit it off the deck if needed - he can probably use this club here and there on other courses. Otherwise, his 3Deep and a distance driver would probably work for him fine. Although I love the idea of a small driver with modern technology, since distance on off-center hits and forgiveness have improved a lot since 300 cc drivers were more popular, and so have shafts on top of that.

the driver from TPC wasn't that good either. Look at the numbers, and not at what he said he did.

 • 3 weeks later...

I read the same thing. Saw somewhere about a quote where he split the fairway with a drive, then hit a bit of a loose second shot with his 8 iron. His comment was "I think we need to come up with a Phranken 8 iron next".

But, I don't think driving was his problem at Augusta.

Spoke to our Callaway liason and said Phil made some minor tweaks to adjust weight but it's the same head. He also said Phil loved the way he drove the ball at Augusta and felt it could be a little better with some minor tweaks. He said where he fell short was his iron play. Also apparently on trackman he is getting STUPID numbers. Can't wait to see this week at Quail Hollow.

ON a side note if this thing hits it further then the 3Deep i will have on at 44".

I agree from what i saw and heard during Augusta. He and others said that his irons where most of the problem at Augusta. He had too many new clubs in the bag for a major or any tournament. But who was going to talk him into not having 3 new short irons and a driver? That approach shots made of course any chance of putting and scoring well not possible. Hopefully he has those short irons dialed in now?
