Summer Golf Trip - Scottsdale Course Recommendations

RJfisher

Recommended Posts

Gents,

I'm hoping some AZ locals can help out with some good tracks to play on a 4 day golf trip this August. Myself and 11 buddies came down from Seattle last summer and are doing it again this year, rental house is right by Camelback Golf Club.

Last year we played TPC (Stadium and Champions), Troon North, and We-Ko-Pa (Saguaro).

Thinking we'll play both We-Ko-Pa courses this time around, but looking for a couple other ideas to round out the weekend. Price really isn't an issue since everything is cheap that time of year, but really looking for tracks that are well maintained in the summer months.

So far the short list is Talking Stick, Eagle Mountain, and Grayhawk, but I'm sure there's a million great options I don't know about. Thanks!

Talking Stick North - very special. IMO.

I would agree you have to consider that landscape Coore and Crenshaw were given to work with on TSN, terrible flat piece of land that they had to turn into a challenging golf course and IMO they did a great job, sure on the surface it looks boring but once you start to appreciate their design philosophy of not moving tons and tons of dirt an what they did with that property the course starts looking a whole lot better.

ok, i will concede that for what they had to work with they did a good job. however it's still not a course i'd recommend over several others to someone on a short golf vacation that's looking to be impressed by what the valley has to offer. maybe my bias against par 70 courses isn't allowing me to be fair in my assessment...

Both Wildfire courses (Palmer and Faldo) should be near the top of your list.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Seems like Boulders South and Quintero are the top choices. I wasn't overly impressed with Troon (probably a function of it being August, but the fairways were in pretty bad shape), and TPC was worth the cheap fee and to hit from the tips on #16, but I wouldn't play either again.

The Saguaro course at We-Ko-Pa on the other hand was pretty great. How does the Cholla course compare? I guess I'm trying to decide if We-Ko-Pa is worth revisiting or if we should play all new courses this summer. Where would you guys rank We-ko-pa against your other recommendations?

I'd put Wekopa Cholla near the top. I love Troon North Monument too and the others I mentioned. The issue with Boulders is make sure you get in the south, the north course is very average.

Wekopa Saguaro is number one in my book. In fact if I had to choose just 1 course in AZ to play for the rest of my life Saguaro would be it. So many different ways to play that course, it does not force one style of golf on you. Playing it in the wind brings out a whole other side to it too.

Troon north is way overrated. There are much better courses in the valley for the money. The service and course maintenance at Troon North has gone down.

I'll chime in. Wekopa - Both Saguro and Cholla, Quintero, I personally really like Las Sendas, and maybe make the trek to Marana for Dove Mountain. They have a summer deal for $300 for 2 people, unlimited golf. You can start at 2pm the day of check in and play til 7pm the day of checkout. We got 64 holes in last year.

Like I said above, Troon is very overrated.

i recall playing camelback once several years ago and since i don't remember feeling the need to go back i don't think i was that impressed.

on another note, i played talking stick north again also and besides 2 or 3 holes it's just ok for me. i still can't figure out why they only built a par 70 with all that land.

I've always had fun playing Camelback, Padre was the first place I ever broke par so it has a special place in my heart haha. That being said, I had a friend who worked at the resort, so it was comped, and haven't been back since as I feel that there are better places to play for similar $$.

I might give it a go this summer, no idea what kind of shape they are in these days, I know that the Indian Bend course is set to re-open this October after a lengthy overhaul, pretty excited about that.

Padre course was excellent choice today!

Greens were fast and firm. Bunkers in great shape. Some patchy fairways where grass is dying off...but mostly very good.

Really enjoyed today! Service start to finish was phenomenal! Perhaps the best overall service I have ever rec'd at a course in AZ!!!!
