golf smith cut my expensive shaft to thewrong length

Recommended Posts

I really need some help, I took my new tour spec7.3 shaft in to the local gift smith and asked the fitter to cut it to 44.5 length he assured me that .75 inches would need to be cut to play at 44.5. when I received the club back it was 44.25 he said he was wrong and he can and an extender to get it back to 44.5 should I be angry ? and what should be done?

If he wrote down that you were supposed to receive it at a certain length and you agreed to this and paid for that service, you are entitled to a new shaft. I would get a manager involved just so everything will be done by the books.

It is a simple mistake that eventually can happen to every club maker. I am glad he owned up to it but the right thing to do would be replace the shaft, not add an extension.

edit: I would not be angry at the situation as again, it was just a careless mistake and he was not trying to hide it. Now, if he and the store manager, refuse to replace the shaft...then I would be angry and keep going up the food chain until you reach the guy that is pissed it ever got to him and the right thing is done.

Have him cut it down another 1/4 inch. 44 inch drivers are where it is at. For real. Just have him swing weight it back to normal. Having to pull the shaft and add weight will be hassle enough to make the point. You get a total dude club and life is good!

Besides, a 1/4 inch in the total scheme of things is no big deal. You would never notice unless you saw it on a measurement scale anyway. Performance should be inconsequential.

I wouldn't be angry with them but I would tell them that it's theirs now and I need one cut to the right specs. Just the principle of it, like buying a "new" club off the rack with scratches all over it from being "demoed". If I buy something new it should be in plastic and un-hit, if I order at 44.5" it should be 44.5".

On the other hand if it were my local clubmaker who I know and does a lot of stuff for me for free and/or reduced charge, then yeah I'm just going to live with it or have it extended if it felt weird.

Yes, just add the extender. They are ultralight and will make no difference in the playability of the shaft.
Been there done that.

But if you go the extender route does that get resale value ?

I would get a manager and have a new shaft ordered for you.

How are you measuring the club? There's still not a perfect way to measure length of clubs IMO and 1/4" is pretty insignificant. I have two Titleist built 3 woods at 42.5" with high end shafts... 8.2 Tour Spec and DI-8 and they're not identical in length... about 1/8" different.

BUT I would still get a manager involved and get a new shaft because these stores need to be held accountable for poor work. They cut every corner with staffing in most locations and more than likely the club repair department was trained via videos on the internet. Why did you take it into a big box store anyway? I would never do that unless I knew and trusted the guy doing it.

I agree with what most people are saying. Make them replace it. The extender would probably be just fine, but it definitely could hurt the resale value. It was their mistake, they should be more than happy to make it right.

You may concede and get the extension put in as at +1/4" the performance won't be affected, but if you need a new putter or pair of shoes, they can sell it to you at their cost. They made a $300 mistake, they should take care of you with that in mind.

That small of an extension will not effect the performance but.......if you go to resell the shaft that could effect value. I would demand a new shaft.

This took place to two days ago on Friday, the fitter called the assistant manager and made her aware of the situation she apologized and said that the store manager would contact titleist for a replacement the following day. I took the shaft in back in the store the following day to the store manager and he then stated that if titleist can't replace that shaft he will add an extension and that's that's, it left a real bad taste in my mouth.

(JW is right - it's hard to measure finished length of driver's especially. The round bottom makes it difficult. You mentioned TItleist - so if it's a 910/913, pull the shaft and compare it to another pulled shaft from a floor model. Then do your subtraction.)

BUT......Golfsmith is awful. It makes my skin crawl to go into ours. Ours is a "extreme megastore" and it's filthy inside.

Be angry and get it rectified. Go up the chain of command if you have to. I never let them touch my stuff. You could have bought a $.99 hack saw blade and cut it off yourself. Maybe you'd want to sell the shaft in the future and for resale purposes, the longer the better. That's a $390 shaft from most sources.

Years ago I had them pull a head - and I even stated "be careful" before he started. He came back and handed me the head and shaft - the shaft had a scratch where he used a hooked carpet exacto to pull off the ferrule. He couldn't understand why I was concerned. He said it was superficial and wouldn't affect the playability.

If you saw the monkeys that work at my local Golfmith you'd have never left your club in their hands. One of the shop guys is a very young kid and the other one they can't figure out how to legally fire - he's crazy in the head. I've seen some work thats come out of there and it's sloppy. Ferrules and shafts with epoxy residue and slop, and regrip jobs with an air pockets in the butt because they weren't put on all the way.

Good luck with Golfsmith. I consider them the K-MART of the golf industry
Unless I need 1 or 2 grips in a hurry,I will not even walk into their store!

When I ran the repair department for the store i worked at, I bought an average of $1000.00 per month from them. A customer had a brand new Graffaloy shaft break under the grip. The shaft probably cost Golfsmith $20.00 , the manager refused to replace it,even though Graffaloy would send them a new shaft!!
Never spent another dime with Golfsmith!

I returned the shaft to Graffaloy for a full refund.

You can get the managers name and list him and Golfsmith as defendants in a small claims case. It is pretty cheap to open the case and easily done by yourself you do not need an attorney. And if you win and you should they pay the court cost. It will make the manager look bad in the eyes of the executives at Golfsmith. Try and get the employee who made the mistake to sign a letter that it is not what you ordered otherwise you need to also list him so he has to show up to court. You basically need to prove you wanted it cut at 44.5 and received it at 44.25 with some type of evidence besides your word vs theirs. A work order or some other evidence.

On another note....do you have a grip installed on the shaft because if you don't it will be really close to 44.5 once installed.
