New PING S-series Iron / S55 / S-55(merged)

Recommended Posts

I agree those pics look more like the i20 successor. The

topline and sole look to be i20 width.

you guys realize these drawings are blown up a bit. Compare the i20 patent drawings to this new one

S55?

s55-2.jpg

Its the s55 guys. This happened with the i20 as well, a few months before they were release these patent drawings came out. The i20s just came out last year, You wont see anything about the i25 until next jan or so

Hate to start this with "I spoke with my rep today," but he did stop in and I had to ask. S55's are slated for an August release. I25s are coming in Jan. he wasn't sure on a release date for the Rapture driving iron, but his sales meeting is next week.

August release? when do we see pics with the tour players? Is that when they will be available to the public?

August release? I find this hard to believe since we are only weeks away. That would be awesome though if true.

Just going by what I was told. He said he would have better info after his meeting. He also said the iron designer (can't remember his name) of the S56 was having a hard time improving the iron. That's one of the reasons it's taken so long to come to market.

Don't think any of the sales reps truly know when the release date is at this point... tons of speculation based on the timing of the sales meeting.
Agree. The S55's are packed up and sitting in a warehouse but Ping will only release them when they feel it's time. They aren't in a rush as existing irons are still selling well.

Agreed J13-

They are still selling the darn G20's too... Custom orders of G20's are on a 4-7 week backorder and people are still ordering these things.....
PING has a following for life like no other IMO. Seems Ping iron players play their irons longer and dont really like switching it up as often either (even if they had the option new gear every year)...

Waiting with high anticipation. I love my 56's and would love to see the same design in a forged model.

I'm a couple generations behind, but my s58s feel great, and they have the added benefit of still being in awesome shape after 5 years and hundreds of rounds and even more range sessions. I don't ho irons, so to me, the fact that they're cast and super durable is a huge selling point, and if they were forged (which they won't be, or else I'll be looking for some tenderizer that'll work well with cord grips), I would be much less likely to buy them.

Agreed, while cast clubs may not feel as buttery smooth they sure last a lot longer.

If you jump irons every couple of years then why not get forged ones, but if you stick with a set (like Ping players typically do as I had my i5's for about 8 years....) the durability of Ping makes them worth even more in my opinion.

Their anser irons are very durable as well, its just a harder metal.

No S55 release at the Open? I thought for sure they'd release a replacement for the s56 at the Open. Any word of this?
I give up. If Ping was going to release a new S series iron we would have seen it this week. At least since as far back as I can remember we saw the new stuff at the Open.

cast clubs do not last longer...I have forged blades in my garage from 1983 that my father handed down to me....they still play just as good as any "modern" club

if these are sitting in a warehouse, and ping isnt ready to release them AND they found it hard to improve on the S56's...it sounds like PINGS development and marketing group need an overhaul
I can't believe people post this stuff on message boards...

I think it has more to do with spending time on other areas that move the needle. They broke sales records for the i20 line compared to any other i series iron since the Eye2. The problem with the S56 is improving the design while still retaining its blade qualities-- again as has been posted here numerous times you can only do so much to improve that design without losing what makes it so well liked by their players seeking a "blade-style" iron. The S56 is still very much liked on tour and PING is not going to release an iron just to release it. I'm sure the comment about "sitting in a warehouse" somewhere was a bit facetious. The S line of clubs like I said before is a VERY, VERY small % of overall iron sales and with it being so well liked by the guys that do actually play it, it makes little to no sense to spend so much time in that area. If their tour staff was demanding an improved S series club then you'd see one sooner. I think its a testament to their design and development team that the S56 iron has been out for over 3 years now and the tour still continues to use and play well with these.

I highly doubt PING is sitting on assembled S55 product and holding it hostage so forum members on GolfWRX can become frustrated that they haven't seen pictures and priveledged to release date information. When PING finds a way to improve the S56 while still retaining a blade-like quality and it translates into positive results and testing for their professional staff then you will see a new model come to market.

I'm a huge Titleist fan and I think they make some of the best irons in the business but they have a different strategy. Every 2 years they release an updated model which includes their forged cavity and muscle back designs... not a whole lot changes year to year on those. PING doesn't do it that way-- neither is right or wrong. I would suspect that if PING was seriously struggling that maybe they would release a club like S55 before it was ready but I don't see that being the case.

you just made my point.....AND from what I read in these forums, the Ansers outsell the S56's???

So, I agree with you. I dont see why PING would rush to make another iron "just because" and then sit on them and not release them.....PING and Titleist are the best out there in my opinion and I agree with you on all accounts.....

Do you guys consider the Anser irons to be lower launching than the i20s?

Yes the Anser irons launch lower and spin less than the i20 irons.
