What is a good golf ball for $20?

A friend was telling me the Taylormade TP3 are widely available at the moment for $19.95 and that's really a top-quality ball with a Urethane cover. Sort of a limited-time deal I suspect. You're probably asking more generally for an everyday price around 20 bucks.

I've actually played a good bit with the Titliest DT Solo. Mostly because you can get them by the sleeve or dozen at most on-course pro shops. It's the one 2-piece ball that seems to perform (for my game) just about as good as the slightlly more expensive 3-piece Surlyn balls. So that's a good default choice.

If there's a Dick's Sports near you the Top-Flite Gamer is $19.99 always and currently only sale two dozen for $35. Fine ball. They also have the Callaway "Hex Diablo" and "HX Diablo" that aren't too bad for 20 bucks. Not IMO the best performing balls but they putt real nice for a firm cover ball.

With a $20 budget I would say wilson duo.

I personally like the feel it gives, I use it as my winter or off season ball.

Budget Golf has Wilson Tour FG balls (blemished) for Under $20 a dozen have both yellow and white. If you can still find the Srixon AD333 it would be a good ball to look into as well. Also my favorite is the 2013 QStar it is $25 but if you get a coupon could lower that to your budget. It is very low spin and works well around the greens.

Is this an "I have $20 in my pocket and need balls available locally and brand-new" question, or is this an "I don't want to spend more than $20 per dozen" question?

Secondly, you need to define what "good" means for you. For some, a "good" ball is solely defined as one they can find after they hit - so a low-spin ball would be key here, and in that case you've got PLENTY to choose from. Even brand new, there are plenty of ammo-grade balls at DSG, for example, for $7-10/dozen.

Most people on GolfWRX assume you want as similar to a Pro V1 as you can find for $20 - if you are in this camp (and frankly, if you're dumping a dozen a week into the water, I'd reconsider pitching your tent there), then save up a couple weeks' worth of ball money and hit something like lostgolfballs.com or rockbottomgolf.com, both of which offer 3+ dozen balls for next to nothing.

Just a quick glance over there shows you could get something like this: http://www.lostgolfballs.com/taylormade-tp-black-ldp-bucket-p/ta-tpblackmix-50bkt.htm

My personal "water ball" - the kind I tee up when I'm having an off day and I know I'm probably sending that first one careening off a tree, down a cart path, and into a lake, is either the Precept EV Extra Spin ($15/15 at Sports Authority locally) or the Gamer V2 ($12.49/12 at DSG locally) - and now that I've seen that bucket, I'm tempted to move in that direction instead.

I read a lot of love for the Wilson duo in your price range. Yellow or white. Take your pick.

I have to believe the Top Flite Gamers for $20.00. Remember they are made by Callaway who bought out Spaulding. ( primarily to get the golf ball factory in Mass) . This ball is probably akin to one of theirs??? DT SoLo is also a real deal for $20.00. Hey, Tity doesn't make any 'cheap stuff.' I've hit them and they are a solid ball. No, they are not ProV1s, but Titleist balls are all good buys.

Look at the Bridgestone E5 from 2011 you can get some good deals on them and the urethane cover will give you good control

I currently enjoy the Nike Vapor Black as a low cost ball option. I like the feel off the tee, in the irons, and putter. Greenside it doesnt check up much but not overly hard/noncompliant. Its a long 3-piece ball with a good durable cover. At $20 bucks a dozen currently, its a very good deal. I just may stock up.

Macgregor MT Tourney at Golfsmith

- doesn't change year to year. Gamed them for 3. Not one change.
- $12 dozen and sometimes $20 for 2.
- decent spin around greens. I can stop it sometimes.
- good off tee.
- relatively soft.

Top Flite Gamer V2 is the best ball for the money.
I prefer it over the Pro V1.

A good number of folks mention the Wilson Duo and I agree. Makes you wonder why Golf Digest only gave it a silver medal in its recent testing. Seems like the more you adverstise the better your ranking.Get the Duo. These folks have no axe to grind.

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
