I think I played Old Silo somehwere around 2005-07, I heard the conditions have deteriorated quite a bit.

 

What does it look like now?

They started to remove around 30 bunkers the last couple years. It looks like they just gave up on them, way to many to keep up with. If you have played Kearney Hills when the bunkers were bad, this is worse. They keep the fairways and greens in ok shape, but I wouldn't play here past the first week or so of June. I think the course is up for sale again.

Yep - amazing course. At the mercy of the elements with the wind coming up from the Pacific. The course is actually quite short by modern standards, but with the wind, it's a tough test. It's a must play for any golfer. To those in the northern hemisphere, it's a long way away, but if you combine NZ (Cape Kidnappers, Kauri Cliffs) with Aus (NSWGC, Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath) it's well worth it!

That's actually #18 at Pipestone.

 

However, the part of it being the absolute worst fairway in Ohio is correct. Oddly enough it's competition for that title might come from the par 5 second hole which is literally unhittable.

Oh and here's my caddie. I accidentally got her in trouble when I killed a drive on the 4th hole. It got too close to the group in front of us and a Marshall made her apologize to the group. They were OK with it and it was no big deal but she wouldn't give me my driver until the group was way past any point of me getting into them :). We all got to laugh about it in the end but I was fairly annoyed with how the Marshall yelled at her. Cultural thing that I don't particularly care for and since I can't speak Mandarin it is tough for me to really say anything. She was laughing about it on the next tee so I got over it quickly.

Bonneville Golf Course

Salt Lake City, UT

 

It's a city course but is usually in good shape. And it has great views of the mountains and overlooks the city for many of the holes.

Did I mention that it's cheap?

If you get to SLC, you should play it. It's a fun course with no water hazards so it's pretty hard to lose a ball unless you hit into one of the ravines. Add to that the elevation advantage and it's a great course for your ego.

11th (most days) looking back toward tees from the green. The flat area on the horizon is the Great Salt Lake.

 

8th from the tee box. Double green on this hole with one green tucked in that nook to the left at the end of the fairway. The other green is strait away in the shadows. The mountains are the Wasatch Front. Park City is just on the other side of those, about 20 minutes from the course.

 

 

Oh, here's the view from the parking lot. Sorry it was late this day but it shows the view over the city. You can barely see one of the greens across the ravine too (par 5 5th, I think).

Relatively long par 3, it's a tough hole only because the green is tiered with some drastic slope to it. If you get it on the wrong tier you are in for a tough par.

I felt the course was fair. Very open on most the holes but some of the par 3s were very hard. Not sure about the tips I played 1 up from those.

#3 approach. Lol. Skulled a gap wedge that skipped across the water 3 times, hit the opposite bank, and popped up on to the green. Easy par. Ugh.

 

 

Met a new friend on the course. While I was teeing off, he stole the McDonald's bag out of my cart. Joke was on him. I had already eaten my McMuffin.
