10 finger grip

Recommended Posts

Has anybody on here switched from an overlapping grip to a 10 finger baseball grip? I've played a lot of ball growing up but have stopped playing and really devote my time to practicing and playing golf. For those of y'all who play a 10 finger baseball grip, what have you gained or lost by switching or playing this grip? Thanks!!

I've played 10 finger grip for 3 years (got down to 12hcp with it) felt more comfortable and easier than overlap or interlock.Ive not improved past 12 with it though as if i hit my bad shot (pull or slice) it would be really bad with the 10 finger!Recently switched to overlap for more consistency.felt awkward at first but fine now irons and driver more consistent but lost a bit of distance than using the 10 finger but its getting better the more i practice.id stick with the overlap if i were you, 10 finger can be a score destroyer sometimes.

I swapped from an interlock to a 10 finger about 2 weeks ago when I went to the Lee Comeaux push/slap swing. Really having great results to date, we'll see how long the honeymoon last.

I have only played for about 6 years and started with the interlocking grip. Felt natural to me, and I got down to a 12 handicap with it. About 6 months ago I read in Golf Magazine (sometimes my downfall) about the virtues of the overlap grip. I changed to that (just for kicks, it wasn't a hard transition), and it seemed that my slight fade turned into a slight draw. Ball striking with my irons has been the weakest part of my game since I took it up. My ball striking didn't improve greatly, just the ball flight changed a little.

Fast forward to about two weeks ago. I had an extended range session and whereas I used to develop a callous on the middle knuckle of my left index finger (I'm right-handed) with the interlocking grip, I was now developing a blister on the outside of my right ring finger with the overlap grip. After about 30 minutes of hitting balls, the blister was starting to hurt, but I wanted to continue hitting balls. So I tried the 10 finger grip. It was amazing. The first swing of my 7 iron produced a beautiful straight, piercing and long shot. Tried it several more times with the same result. Went through my entire bag with essentially the same results.

Wondering if this was a fluke, I hit the range the next day using the 10 finger grip. Exact same results. Thinking it was too good to be true, I have now played 4 rounds using this new grip exclusively on all of my full shots (I am still using the overlap grip for my wedge shots, which are all less-than-full chips and pitches). I have had some of the best ball striking rounds with my woods and irons I have ever played. My only concern is that this might be a temporary fix. I have read over and over that the grip is the foundation of the entire golf swing, and I haven't read anything that would suggest that the 10 finger grip is widely used or promoted by any golf pros and teachers. Now I wonder if this will be short-lived and will I screw up my game. However, I don't feel like changing back as I am really enjoying this. I am able to keep the club in my fingertips, and I feel I have more control. My hands are just about as close together as they were with the interlocking grip.

I am hitting very solid shots much more consistently than before. I have no clue as to why, but I am now hitting the sweet spot much more often. I want to play this game in a technically correct way as I think that will be the path to long-term consistency. Is the 10 finger grip a valid technique to get there?

Any thoughts?

I have taught several hundred students the ten finger grip with outstanding results the past three years. There is not only nothing "wrong" with it - it is the best way to hold the club for the vast majority of golfers. Harvey Penick and Tommy Bolt agree.

I'm 10 finger and have no motivation or reason to try any other grip again. Seriously, it's that good. Complete contact pressure, secure comfortable hold, better feel, better shot results, etc etc. Last but not least, it makes gripping a club easy and quick....no fiddle, no struggle.

There is no compromise with it, it's just the best way to hold the club for me and many others, by far. Do not gloss over it as an after thought, till you give it a chance

As a lefty who only golfs righty, the 10 finger really feels way more secure in this sport. I have better power and dexterity naturally in the left hand, so many years of interlock seem to be kinda wasted for me after this season mostly going fully back into 10 finger.

The right hand has always felt weaker on the grip and in its actions thu the ball, too much of a trailer or straggler. To lessen that effect, just moving it down an eight inch out of interlock, and confidence is way up. Why would a lefty want their already weaker hand/arm less attached?

Plus, I can hook or draw if needed now - it feels like the clubface can be closed off at impact should that type of shot around some obstacle arise.

Scott Piercy is a current 10-finger gripper.

  • 3 weeks later...

Due to tendonitis (tennis elbow), 2 weeks ago I added 1.5 inches to club length and regripped with Lamkin Crossline jumbos.

I was playing mens standard with an interlock. Now with all ten fingers on the club the short game has gone up a level and

the arms seem to be better too. I cant remember the last time I did any sustained serious practice, maybe soon.

Well it's been a few weeks and still going strong. I have no plans to switch from the 10-finger back to inter-lock. Best ball-striking I have ever experienced.

I've played with a "10 Finger" (or Old Fashioned) grip for a good 20 yrs. It IS NOT, however, a baseball grip. It is completely different. I feel I have better control over the shot with this grip.
