Roses Run in Stow is open for anyone looking for a course to play.
Holes 13-15 can pisss off there haha.
Never played there, but seriously? If there were a course open with this garbage winter we've been having, I wouldn't care if 13-15 had a windmill, clown, and ramp on them. Any other thoughts to contribute?

They're alright but pretty tight and you'll likely end up on another fairway if you have a bad tee shot. I think the worst hole (that I somewhat still enjoy on a good day) is #12. Forced carry off the tee and on the second shot to a small green with water on the right.

Did you play? If so, how was it? I need to get out there more, it can be a little expensive at times.
I'm hopefully playing today after work and again on Friday. I'm assuming the back 9 will be a little more wet since it's more shaded overall than the front 9.

Roses run is actually a decent track. They did however put the houses way to close to the course! I can explain it better in person though!

Well Roses Run is open but they close really early (the shop was closed up by 3:45) so I'm not sure when they take the last tee time. I ended up going to Fox Den to hit some, but it was too muddy and I think I'd have preferred to hit off of the mats at Downview.

It also looks like it'll be a little bit longer before we can get out again as the weather predictions keep getting worse.

The greens were plugged, charged me $10. I just walked 9... Wasn't too bad just to get out and play. The greens were not really playable though.... If you made anything longer than 2 feet there was some luck involved.

My only birdie was a 2 putt from about 6 feet.

So anyone playing any courses on their bucket list this year or courses you've never played but look forward to playing? The only one on my list is Firestone North & South. Other than that I'd like to play either the Greenbrier old white TPC course in WV or a couple of the Bethpage courses, although I'm not sure if that'll happen this year.

I played The Old White Course at Greenbrier last year when I went to the golf academy there. It was my first experience on any course of that caliber and difficulty. Even compared to the other two courses there, it was much much different. I don't have any plans to play anywhere this year, but that could change at any moment. There are a lot of courses around here that I haven't played but would love to, mostly up around Cleveland. I still wanna play Avalon Lakes and maybe the Lake Club. I think I can make that happen this year.

I have played Avalon Lakes many times, and the Lake Club once last year. The Lake Club is probably more exclusive and slightly tougher to get out on, but Avalon Lakes is a better golf course by a wide margin. Better layout and better maintained. Don't get me wrong, the Lake Club was a great course, and the amenities are top notch. Very fun. But, there were a few stretches where it felt like it had more of a public feel than private. There's a few holes that are just flat, straight medium length par fours that have that back-and-forth with a thin line of trees separating fairways, and there's some dumpy houses lining a few of the fairways and on the corners of the course. Avalon does a great job of making you feel like you are isolated on a much larger piece of property. There are very few back yards surrounding the course at Avalon, I can only think of a couple spots where you can see residential areas from the course. But, they're both well worth playing, so I'd check them both out as soon as you get the chance and form your own opinion. Also check out Squaw Creek if you haven't yet. It is definitely Avalon Lake's little brother (not necessarily length-wise), but a fun course nonetheless and top level maintenance.

I do have a couple hook-ups to get on the Lake Club, so am hoping to get on without much problem. I have heard a bunch of good things about Squaw Creek too. I think Avalon Lakes is the one I want to play the most. I just want to try them out. I don't really have the budget to play them regularly. I got into the league at Oak Tree so I am pretty excited about that. I love that course. They are still looking for players for Tuesday night if anybody is interested. Let me knoiw and I can get you the info.

I like Oak Tree a lot. They have some good deals there quite often, also. Really worth a little drive if anyone hasn't played it and is looking for a nice surprise. Another course I played last season that really surprised me, but might be a little more of a drive for most, is The Greens of Greenville over in Greenville, PA. Totally didn't expect to like it as much as I did, and got a great deal on the tee time through GolfNow, (I think). My only complaint with it was there is a little bottleneck on the course where like 4 holes intersect and it gets a little backed up, but for the price I paid (I think like $16 for 18 & a cart), it was a fantastic value and a challenging course.

I'd give my left nut to play Firestone south
I only get a chance because my brother in law is a member there, but it sounds like the North course will be just as good if not better than the south. And I was thinking of trying the south maybe the week before or after the WGC tournament just to really get my butt handed to me and see first hand how difficult they make the course for the pros just for the experience, but for my first time ever playing there I'm not sure if I'll want that.

And it's honestly not as expensive as I thought it'd be depending on what membership you go with. I contemplated joining for the year but it's about 40 mins from me and I don't want to have to always drive that far. Plus that allows me to play other really nice courses in the area and not feel like I have to play just Firestone. At least that's how I see it.

I went past Turkeyfoot earlier and there's a poor lost soul putting in 29 degree weather with a stiff wind. I felt like calling his friends for an intervention.

Hey! I've been that guy before! (Ohio winters drive us golfers to lengths we didn't think possible at times)

I honestly thought about calling Downview to see if they were open when I left work. It took a stop at Circle K to pick up a 12 pack of Yuengling to talk me out of it.

The week(s) before the South Course is a tough one to pull depending on the year... the last several years they've been closed several weeks in advance if I remember correctly. And really the weeks after aren't easy to get on either... again depending on the year. The South playing like the tournament setup is NOT easy... mostly because of the rough. Also, if you're a double digit handicap the back tees are BRUTAL especially if you don't drive it straight. The South Course is really not that fun honestly-- a lot of the holes are same. Driver, long iron....driver, long iron.... repeat. if you can get on those weeks though, kudos to you! I have yet to play with someone on the North Course that didn't enjoy it. The West is pretty easy and a good one to get your confidence back...

You're right though, joining there is affordable for the quality of golf you're getting along with the range. I will say this though-- they always have tons of events and tournaments going on so often times you can't always pick the course you want. Generally though one of the courses will be open for normal/casual day to day play. Where do you live? There are a couple other great privates that are affordable that might be closer or easier for you to get to...

Used to caddy there and still do for certain events and agree on all accounts. West and North are way more fun in my opinion. West doesn't get enough press, it's a really cool course in my opinion. TBH if I was playing one course, it would be the west. I feel like it's the most difficult kind of course to get anywhere else. Obviously like JW said the south is kinda boring. Straight away after straight away. North obviously is awesome, but it just doesn't seem to be that special to me. West is easy, but it just is so awesome to me. Love how the course sets up. Bring some extra balls if you play the north....

Definitely agree about the events, and there are even times when all 3 courses are full, which kinda sucks... They're really stingy about who plays the south most of the year if I remember right. When I was actually caddying there and not just doing certain events, it was extremely rare for someone to play the south. That might have just been an anomaly over a few months though.

Since the new year, JW has probably been to Myrtle twice, Kohler once and had Titleist and Ping compete for his affection with a set of custom tour issue , stamped, COR'd, Pured, Flo'd , spined and blessed by hephaestus himself. ( Pretty sure all the shaft alignment things would interact, but hey nothing but the best for JW)

And I bet they threw in some custom alignment sticks too. I'm sure after those AD DI looking ones came out, you had to figure out a way to top that.

After walking the south for the first time at the WGC event last year I honestly wasn't as impressed as I thought with the layout, it wasn't what I expected I guess. As for location I'm in Ravenna, I'm probably less than 10 minutes from Windmill Lakes.

Hey now! I've been on one golf trip in my life and it was last year... you just happened to know about it. I played 20 (18 hole) rounds in 2013... my lowest in a decade when I first started playing the game. Titleist and PING are by choice.... FWIW! Be nice or I won't regrip your clubs again...... Lol. I did stretch those things to the exact same length with every club....

JK pin.

After reading your post I do agree with you... the West Course really is a fun course generally in perfect condition... or at least it has been when I've played it.

After walking the south for the first time at the WGC event last year I honestly wasn't as impressed as I thought with the layout, it wasn't what I expected I guess. As for location I'm in Ravenna, I'm probably less than 10 minutes from Windmill Lakes.

Barrington! Favorite course and is a good challenge.

Not exactly affordable.... Lol.

Oh really? I had no idea. I googled and got some numbers that didn't seem too bad, but I'm sure they were a bit off. I totally would be alright with being buried there though. Definitely the favorite course I've played. There's a tournament for the college tour here, where it's like 70 bucks to enter... And you get a free practice round.. Count me in

My big thing about west is the shot-making and placement. I honestly enjoy even watching people play on the west, just to see what they do on 4 and 5. Usually always really really good or really bad. Whole lot of fun either way.

I'm thinking if we cut that extension off I'll be able to close out a club championship over your incoming guy(IH). 6 under over 7 holes and spanking the kid and then threw it away... Getting beat by these youngins hurts. If you guys aren't busy I'll bring it in sometime next week.

I'm still not sure I'm sold on finding a club to join. There are so many courses in the area I haven't played that I'd like to expand where I play. I wish Windmill offered some kind of season pass so I could have a quick 9 or hit the range whenever I wanted but unfortunately they don't. I'd imagine it has something to do with the fact that KSU plays there but I have no idea.

Are there any other courses in Ohio you all would recommend that are a must play? Or even in western PA or WV?
