Most ridiculous thing heard on the range

I've never played a private club where untucking your shirt was acceptable. I would say they are not strict with their dress code.

You're right... I should have said formerly strict. The whole goal in them relaxing it was so they come across less stuffy or uppity.

The irony is, none of the members at mine play with untucked shirts anyways haha.

You guys need to get out more. You think a local 9 hole muni struggling to get players cares what shoes (or not) you are walking around in?

(not directing this at huddledtoash, just in general)

Haha I never said it bothered me. What does bother me about Muni's is that it takes the same time to play 9 as it does 18 on a good day at my course. /derail

Not on the range. I was playing with a few friends and we get paired with a remarkably put together and beautiful older gal. She was a class act all the way. I'm on my best behavior. We're going along nicely pleasantries exchanged. She then smacks a huge oak tree on a par 3. We all get on the green marking, cleaning etc. She licks her ball, not joking and states It tastes like wood. we busted out laughing. I saw her smirk out of the corner of my eye. She controlled the world.

I don't see how people do this. I can't walk across my yard barefoot, much less try to hit balls that way.

I don't do it anymore in public. People tend to stare, and I have to keep refraining from adjusting their eyesight. ;)

So what I do now is I practice in my stocking feet on my nice thick hitting mat on my back patio. I find that it helps with my balance and swing timing, which I need help with because I'm tall and have a long torso. I can bob and weave with the best of them if I don't pay attention. :)

Two guys with pretty thick foreign accents approach me while I’m practicing: “excuse me. Can you teach us how to hit it straight?”

(I’m a ten-handicapper.)

I kind of blink at them and say, “you should go get lessons from a professional. You can sign up for lessons at the front desk....”. They walked away. No idea if they left the game forever or actually took lessons!

Nothing that was said, but a kid just showed up a my driving range and pulled a baseball bat out of his golf bag. He started swinging it a few times and then put it back in his bag.

Wouldn’t that take up lots of valuable space and be heavy? Let him borrow your club ring or maybe he never saw anyone swing two clubs? Lol. There has to be a better way.

I wasn't sure why he had it. I fully expected to hear the sound of the bat hitting golf balls, but it never did.

it can be used as a training aid to try to teach a proper release. Some people struggle with allowing their hands to turn over, and swinging a baseball bat can help them feel what a proper release feels like.

I'm at the range, a dude shows up with his kids. He is a loud talker, starts telling them tempo is everything, tries get them to swing to the tempo of

"here comes the bride". The next hour he is getting louder and louder - more angry at the kids - scream / yelling; here comes the bride!!!!

He cleared the range, I stood in a state of humorous disbelief, looking for hidden cameras - had to be a joke. But no, it was real.

“If you can hit your full swing putter 140 yards straight, consistently, you can always count on that in your bag”.....

He also asked if I was a scratch golfer.... my inner self (15 HCP) just laughed and laughed..

He had just about zero percent actual golf knowledge but he didn’t let it stop him from offering up gem after gem of horseshit advice... even though my buddy and I never asked him

He later came to me as a patient (i am a physical therapist) and I can honestly say he is one of the top five most annoying patients I’ve ever had: he talked over trying me to explain what he needs and basically ignored any rationale I gave him -(he would do back extensions FOR DAYS and was already with advanced stenosis - for non-medical crowd that is literally THE WORST thing he could do and made his condition far worse).. when he self-discharged I just thought to myself “wonder if he’s a scratch golfer?”

What a chucklehead.

I sometimes hit balls after work at a lighted range where you hit balls into water rather than grass. Even though there are several floating yardage markers, something about hitting into water seems to give folks an excuse to go even more into denial than usual when it comes to their actual results. More than once I've heard "that must have gone 300 yards" after a shot that fell short of the 200-yard marker in the air.

Water makes distances appear farther than they really are. I think golf courses in general do too. That guy needs a lesson in trusting yardage markers.
