All of this cinema chat and nothing about Hitchcock?

Interesting stuff Scooter. Dunno' where the conservatism comes from. Socially conservative maybe - but there are more political parties in Scotland now than there are elected Conservative MPs. We'll not get into the whys and wherefores of that on a golf site though, eh?

What's your thing with Man U? Anything other than that you're a Liverpool fan? I know the fans are an easy target (just ask Roy Keane) - but the club itself?
Nope, nothing other than being a Liverpool fan. Is more needed?

Actually, I am a big fan of the "classic" Liverpool clubs of the 70's and 80's that played good hard football, yet carried themselves with professionalism and class. For example, a certain Mr. Souness (geez, another Scot!) was more than happy to cleat stomp any forward that attempted Ronaldo-type moves, yet captained a team of professionals. Now compare this to Man U during their 1990's-2000's ascendancy, and players like Cantona, Beckham, Keane, Rio Ferdinand, Neville, and Ronaldo were grossly detestable. Plus Sir Alex (and this is grudgingly admitted) was a brilliant tactician, an excellent harvester and developer of talent, and the master of pre-match mind games. And there have been some cracking lads who were professionals who played for the side - Giggs and Scholes both come to mind as excellent professional footballers.

Really, it's just plain old jealousy at their league success. And as the "brand" of Man U becomes more global, at least I feel Liverpool has kept a touch of its tradition, with local working-class lads being in the side to this day.

Scooter,I am a Warwickshire boy, born and bred in Stratford-upon-Avon,attended King Edward VI Grammar School and just happen to live in Yorkshire because property in Bridlington is cheap.
There are several downsides, drug addicts and alkies from the West Riding are sent to Bridlington because they can be housed cheaper here than in Leeds, there is no investment and therefore few job opportunities as the fishing has almost disappeared due to EU quotas imposed on British fishermen (same in Scotland),you can tell how bad it is when a lad I know mentioned how he was due to go for his second interview at McDonalds(!),it used to be that second interviews were for proper jobs not a junkfood jockey although there is probably a name for the position like 'High temperature root vegetable development technician'.
The golf courses here are pretty crap, the one I'm currently a member of is saved only by the scenery, the vista across Bridlington Bay towards Spurn Head and the Humber estuary is frequently spectacular (Thou by the tide of Humber woulds't complain),I had thought about moving to Scotland!

Well Okesa,

I did spend some time in Warwickshire while in the UK. We stayed at a hotel in Rugby (where we also ate), and did visit Stratford-upon-Avon to see the home of the great bard. We did unfortunately run out of time on our visit, as I had hoped to visit the back-to-backs in Birmingham. And I also unfortunately found out doing some geneaology that if we had driven one short hour East, I likely could have had a pint with what appears to have been my fairly inbred Cambridgeshire lineage.

From what I know of Yorkshire vs. Warwickshire, many days you must feel like you almost have already moved to a different country.

And yes, times have changed. I think of how much deindustrialization has affected the "Western World" - Sheffield, Detroit, Birmingham, Pittsburgh. The list goes on and on of the cities that are/were forced to adapt due to the erosion of industry, both 20th century, and traditional. I can't say the fishing on Canada's east coast is all that healthy either, with many communities decimated by the disappearance of something that wasn't just an industry....it was a way of life.

The ability to get a good paying manufacturing job seems to be gone with the 20th century. And now good, sound lads are forced to work McJobs.

On a brighter note, yes Uncle Bob,likewise with the great W.C "And it ain't a fit night out for man nor beeeeeeaast" and classic Laurel and Hardy still makes me howl, one of my favourites is when they have only enough cash for one sarsaparilla and agree to have half each upon which Stan drinks the whole lot explaining to a furious Olly that he'd chosen the bottom half!

Scoot, understand what you mean the good jobs dwindling. Have a couple of friends, software IT guys that lost their jobs due to outsourcing, and I mean OUT sourcing, like out of the country, off the continent type!!!
On a brighter note, I am retiring from my underwater adventures and continent hoping of the last 40 years and may have landed a sweet gig in the adjacent county.

That's probably fair enough. There must have been something in the Anfield water through the 70s and early 80s. It would be a stretch to describe anything connected with latter day Man U as working class - but as you say, they did manage to develop a few decent players too. Even Beckham, who if I never again see him in his tattoos and underpants it'll be too soon, was by all accounts a guy who loved his football. And I believe Fergie to have made some efforts to prevent player salaries spiralling completely out of control.

Not just Man U becoming global, they ALL are which is why England cannot field a decent international side, back in '66 (when we won the World Cup) if you had to name the 20 best players in the country they would all have been English bar a couple of Scots and maybe an odd Welshman or Irishman whereas today the top 20 would likely all be foreigners bar one or two UK nationals.

Agree about Beckham, tats and kecks and that wife of his phew! Was she 'Scary Spice'?She scares me!A 100% minger.

Cordon bleu Scooter, you defame Eric Cantona one of the few Man Utd players of recent times that I thought truly World class,he was a level above the rest especially when loudmouth fans were involved, that bloke must have filled his pants when he saw Big Eric coming for him,not forgetting he's an actor, poet and philosopher too.

Well said sir!I have to concur with your estimation of England's current footballing prowess but believe that the problem is that they have not entered the correct competitions.
If the present team and management had entered either "Talking a good game" or "Best excuses for not winning" tournaments we would without doubt be World Champions,on the other hand we would probably lose in the semi-final to a German excuse!
And to be fair,I have already mentioned one of Scotland's two footballing highlights, wee Archie's goal being one,the other was the demolition of the Wembley goalposts in 1977,something I found quite funny despite all the tut-tutting of the commentators,I mean it's quite understandable that there should have been such unconfined joy at winning when you had been on the receiving end of so many Paxo* jobs over the years!

*'Paxo' is a mixture bought in a packet used for stuffing chicken or turkey. The term 'stuffing' in rude English is a slightly more polite form of 'f*****g',ergo,if in a game or match you have been 'Paxoed' or on the wrong end of a 'Paxo job',you have been well and truly stuffed and done over by the opposition.

I have great empathy and sympathy for the Scots, you must be a nation of maryrs to abide Alex Salmond,a fishy character indeed and another who exemplifies the career politician that are so prevalent (or prelavent as Ronnie Barker would have it) now, full of ideas but divorced from reality, prime example of course was T. Blair who I think became a left-footer in the hope that the Holy Father would canonize him for all his good works (the needless slaughter in Iraq and Middle East peace envoy? What Arab in their right mind would trust him?).
My idea involves canon but spelt cannon, inserted into Mons Meg he could be projected over the rooftops of Leith, spreading his message of 'peace' the response to which would no doubt be 'An peace on you too!',followed by Gordon Brown as an encore.

Being a long way from the real world in Australia , this makes me think what other countries have given me.
Japan -> Epon irons and great movies like The Twilight Samurai.
Scotland -> Whisky and David Hume.
Burma -> Buddhism and fresh fried tofu.
USA -> Cultural imperialism and the transistor.
England -> A sense of superiority and Antiques Roadshow.
Ireland -> Being depressed as a way of life and and and
Sweden ->. Ancestors and ABBA.
China -> My complete workshop.

The sold state transistor is i reckon the most incredible thing that has happened in the last 100 years.
Advances in software (mind, philosophy, meaning of life etc) has been remarkably lacking by comparison.

Pin,
I cut my electronic teeth on Vacuum tube theory and well remember the "transition" to solid state. And as a revolutionary innovation I must agree it has made the greatest technological advances possible of a log rhythmic nature in the history of our species. Those early days were exciting and wondrous times.

Well done B.S.!Despite my facetious post I'm not entirely ignorant of Scottish Enlightenment but discovered that it is all hypothesis and that the reality is two bottles of Buckie.
Pinsplitter's post contains much truth about the state of our minds and the opinion that much of mankind has of itself has become a godlike assumption or presumption that we are able to control almost everything on the planet, even life and death.
Our sense of values has changed dramatically even during my lifetime, greed and shallow consumerism appear to be the order of the day but given the hypocrisy and lack of leadership from some of the established churches it's hardly surprising that spirituality has taken a back seat.
I'm not entirely sure how far it is possible to move our minds forward,Buddhism and the Muslim faiths have different sects but have reached their respective apogee, personally I find them both more attractive than western options as far as organised religions are concerned but I am not and never have been a good team player or felt the need to be in the 'in crowd' especially now in the latter part of my life.
Rather,I have my own makeshift credo cobbled together from thoughts like John Donne's 'No man is an island entire of itself' and Sartre's 'Man is fully responsible for his nature and his choices'.
I did like the idea of that list though,here's mine;

The last was actually the toughest choice, indelible on my memory is the geography class at grammar school taken by Mr 'Toffee' Holland on the subject of Australia and how myxamatosis had been introduced to reduce the epidemic proportions of rabbits that were breeding like, well, like rabbits. Two desks away a kid was daydreaming as 'Toff' droned on until he suddenly yelled "GOODYEAR,what is Australia best known for?".

Ahhh Skippy, that great Aussie show with the production values you get from giving your 5 year old daughter the camera.
The off camera paw-on-a-stick-holder acting job was was very sought after.
Non anglo-saxon australians now use the term "a skip" to describe anglo aussies (kinda derogatory).

Dead rabbits.. good.. i like dead rabbits as our offering to world progress, our clever forebears built a
rabbit-proof fence. It was built to protect Western Australian crops and pasture lands from the destructive scourge of the rabbit. Introduced to Australia in Victoria in the 1850s, the pest rapidly spread across eastern Australia. By 1896 it had been found as far west as Eucla and 200 kilometres further west at Twilight Cove, near Esperance. The fence represents a unique, if inadequate, response to an overwhelming environmental problem.
Construction began in 1901. It stretched 1834 kilometres from the south coast to the northwest coast.
The longest fence in the world, that's the kinda stuff we can do here, pretty damn impressive eh!
See, we keep our feet on the ground here, none of that man on the moon stuff, we wake up every morning and say ''ok let's go kill some rabbits''.

Rabbits are pretty clever, kangaroos are really dumb.
You can hear the thump of an 8 iron hitting a roo, it just looks up, twitches it ears, take 2 hops and eats more grass.
that course in my avatar had a plague of kangaroos and also emus, some rabbits and lizards and snakes.

Movies: we have made 1 1/2 good movies. Have a look at Sunday Too far Away sometime.
The title from a poem about the shearer's wife's lament about lack of husbandly duties,
''Friday too tired, Saturday too drunk, Sunday too far away''
I worked in shearing sheds a bit when i was a young lad, extraordinarily weird culture it was.

Considering the way in which the Commonwealth countries have been treated I think you are all entitled to be as derogatory as you think fit,you all got the brown end of the stick as far as I'm concerned, the lure of Europe overcame any loyalties owed,a case of 'Thanks for all the lifeblood you've spilt on our behalf but we now prefer to be toadies and lickspittles to the French and Germans.'
How about 'Breaker Morant' as a good Aussie film?
I love the idea of Australia but I don't like snakes,in fact I am terrified of snakes and laugh to bust when someone says that the snake is equally scared, that's not the bloody point! Those brown jobs are the 2nd(?) most venomous snake in the world and a few drops injected mean Adios Amigos so meeting one on the golf course might mean a club throwing session followed by a sprint to the clubhouse for a change of underwear.
The brown jobs I refer to are the Brown snake variety not the 'browns' as in 'greens' as seen in your avatar, where is that located?
