Makes my locale seem relatively tropical by way of comparison. But you're in Minnesota. Isn't having one occurrence of bitter cold temps at least once per winter par for the course? Why expedition weight snowmobile suits and Sorel's were invented. Not to make light of it, as that's dangerously cold if one is exposed for any length of time.

Ugh indeed. Think spring.

Yes sir, it's fairly normal. The duration is kind of variable; some years it's a day or two, other years it might go on for a week or two.

Thankfully, I live in the Twin Cities, far enough south that it's not as bad as it could be. The folks in northern MN have it much worse, every year. International Falls was -37* a couple days ago, IIRC.

Even 80 miles north of us at Lake Mills Lacs (we have a place there), the difference is surprising.

Memory trigger....

My ancestors come from northern Finland. My grandfather was from Kuusamo, 60 km south of Arctic Circle, and my grandmother was from a town *on* the Arctic Circle. They emigrated around 1911.

Normally, when people came to the USA, they were looking for a better life, which might include weather. In spite of settling here in Minnesota, coldest state in the country (at the time) they probably *did* find better conditions. LOL

Meanwhile in Helsinki, we are having a blizzard that put down a foot in the last 12 hours. It was 5°F degrees yesterday and -5°F last thursday (went skiing both days). Kuusamo and Rovaniemi were -20° or so yesterday.

Today I went to the local golf dome by bike and got there just after 4 (when the rates go to prime time). I asked the guy if it was prime time and he said yeah 4:01 and he looked up at me (covered in snow) and was like “did you... bike... here??” I said, “yeah why?” “Oh the clocks in here can be a little fast, I guess it's only 3:59 (wink)”

Saved me 5 bucks!

Also triggering some wayback memories. Also of some Finnish descent. Although the details are a bit murkier. My maternal great great grandfather emigrated from Finland as a young man to work in the copper mines in the Keweenaw Peninsula (Calumet area) in the late 19th century. Reportedly from the Helsinki area, but no one was ever quite sure. He married my great great grandmother (also Finnish) when here, had a child (my great grandmother), then reportedly died in a mining accident shortly thereafter. My great grandmother was still alive when I was very young. Recall her speaking Finnish.

She married my non-Finnish great grandfather, and moved away form the U.P when the copper boom ended. Down to the northern lower peninsula first (logging), then further south to S.E. Michigan to work in the automotive factories. The last name of Riikka (sp?) was lost along the way. I'm an amalgamation of several different ethnicities. A mutt.

Still. The Finnish culture and tradition still runs strong in the Keweenaw. Spend time up there, likely to hear Finnish still spoken, especially by older folks. The Finnish language is still taught in schools up there. Every house seemingly has a sauna. There's even a Finlandia University in Hancock, MI.

Maybe why, in a small way, I can tolerate the cold a whole lot easier than I can deal with hot weather. Gets into the mid-90's, don't want to be outside unless I'm submerged in water. Sure as hell not playing golf. Finnish genes in the pool. IDK.

Fella, makes sense to me. I'm also only part Finn, 50% in my case; the other half is Norwegian. Hard to get much more Minnesotan than a Finnish-Norwegian, LOL. I've also always had a "personal furnace" myself, though it shows signs of reduced effectiveness in my 50s.

My father's family settled some 50 miles west of the Twin Cities, in French Lake, MN. A LOT of Finns in the area. :) My father and his siblings also all spoke Finn, their mother never learned English. Cousins all over, most with saunas; my dad loved visiting them and getting authentic sauna time, LOL. Seems a recurring theme. My family name was quite Finnish (Karjalainen, unsure of umlauts), it was changed to get something more American sounding before departing Finland.

Sadly, I never learned the language. I picked up a couple words here and there in my younger days, a few more lately with Google just to call my wife goofy pet names in Finn. She just laughs.

I didn't realize so many Finns wound up in MI, though I should have, if only due to the weather. ;)

Could be worse, NRJyzr. You could have settled around about Winnipeg, or worse still, Thompson Manitoba where the polar bears walk right into town!

Interesting bit of trivia; my wife is Hungarian. She could speak it when she was a child because that is all her grandparents spoke. She is no longer fluent, but has a working understanding of the language. Despite the geographic proximity to Slavic countries, Hungarian or Magyar has no similarity to those dialects. The closest related tongue is Finnish despite being almost 2000 km to the north.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

I've met a gent from Winnipeg who is a regular on GEA. We've chatted many times about the ugliness that is Winnipeg weather. LOL some of the temps he would report are nothing short of ludicrous.

More memory trigger...

My father passed in 2003. He was in the hospital when he passed, a nurse was in the room when it happened. And, she spoke Hungarian, as it hapens. She swore my father was speaking to someone in Hungarian moments before he died. A language he did not speak. However, he *did* speak Finn, as mentioned earlier. I'm 100% positive that's what she heard him speaking.

Wife and I did one of those DNA test kits, in our case thru 23 and Me. When my results came back, it showed I was 49.something percent Finn. No surprise. But, when I looked at the geo profile they offered, one of the maps showed migration of this DNA pool from the general Hungary area to the general Finland area.

I found that rather interesting.

Many things to talk about regarding Finnish, as it’s my non-golf hobby.

First, Karjalainen is just karjalainen, no ä’s anywhere. It means ”one from Karjala (Karelia)”, a region in the southeast of Finland, much of which was ceded to the USSR after the Continuation War, a theater of WWII. Karjala gives us the Karelian pie and a decent budget beer with a cool logo.

Now Finnish and Hungarian are related in the Uralic language family, but that connection is almost in name only; only about 200 words remain shared (ish) between the 2 nowadays, examples like “hand” käsi/kéz and ”go” mennä/menni. For the most part these languages are separate. Other cousin languages include Estonian and a whole host of aboriginal Russian languages that may or may not be spoken outside of the influence of Russian.

Btw, do not sleep on Finland as a golf destination, I have found a variety of decent courses to play in the Helsinki area and beyond. These long summer nights (oh where did they go) allow for plenty of golf for sure!

An eventful weekend......welcome to the twilight zone........

Spotted a couple of things on eBay last week,a Japanese sword guard in the US and a barely used set of Miura cavity back irons here in the UK.

The Miuras were minty,KBS shafts, really nice and I thought I would have a serious bash at them and left an opening bid that remained the high bid until the day the auction ended when it went up to £260.

Bearing in mind the fact that a new set costs around £1,200 I decided to plonk my bid at the last possible moment settling on £426.

8 seconds to go,placed the bid,hit 'confirm' and the bid failed to register, they were knocked down at £260!

Dang!

I spent the rest of the evening convincing myself that I hadn't really wanted them, that C-Taper shafts were not for me,that the lofts were too strong,blah-blah.

I did buy the sword guard......started at $17.50 and ended up paying $187 with shipping.

Some of you may remember that I bought a set of Spalding Synchro-Dyned irons from a seller in the US who screwed up and sent them to the wrong address.

After resorting to eBay I received a complete refund.

Browsing eBay UK this morning, what did I find?

Spalding Synchro-Dyned irons,2 to 9,the very same set,now being sold by a company that just coincidentally are close to the logistics company who couldn't provide me with any information on their location last year.

I bought them, cost me less than the first time but how strange is that?

One of the worst Febuary in memory.

Not just snow but WAVES of snow storms coming one after another, currently in the midst of the 4th wave and the 5th is due in a couple of days. There be freezing rain mix in between.

Cold air streaming down from the Canadian Fraser River Valley meets up with warm moisture coming up from the South Pacific ( which brought rain along the coastline all the way from California ) , we have lots of snow as a result.

Wife was just relieved that I had my kidney stone surgery at the beginning of the storms, she said we'd have to call ambulance to send me to the hospital if we have to go during the storms.

Have more than a foot of compact snow sitting on the ground right now, which is very uncommon for this region.

They reported a Snow Thunder Storm near the Olympic mountain range yesterday , which they say was like the unicorn of weather pattern.

I know , some of you will say that's nothing comparing to the other areas in the country, but , Seattle and surrounding cities have lots of hilly streets.

We wish when the warmer sir hits, the accumulated snow will melt away slowly, we certainly don't need flooding on top of the weeks long snow-down.

WE lived in Seattle area for 20 some years before moving to California desert 4 years ago. WE do not miss the rain at all. The winters were terrible because they do not have the crews to take care of any streets but the arterials and the ice storms were the worst. Hearing the tall pine trees falling all around where you live because of the soft ground and weight from the ice was like living in a war zone.

went several times for over a week with no power, had to pull my mom out of nursing home as they had no power for over a week since we had 2 gas fireplaces that still worked without power

Btw , its suppose to rain here in the desert off and on for couple weeks....

ISTM that the weather has been sketchy no matter where you live. We have had a major storm roll through for four consecutive weeks, the last two being the freezing rain and ice varieties. Travel conditions have been abominable. I live in the country and we have a longer gravel driveway. It's currently a sheet of ice; rough ice, but ice none the less. It's supposed to warm up again for a couple of days, so that should help melt it.

Fortunately we haven't had any power disruptions and tree damage has been limited in the immediate area. Road crews have done a stellar job of keeping the main arteries clear and free of ice. Side roads are another story though, but life goes on in the land around the lakes. It could be a lot worse!

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

I hear you, we don't mind the rain as the annual rainfall volume is still less than the B.C. or the Portland area but, we don't like all the sudden increase of population from elsewhere. dense population put stress on the infrastructure, which gave the politician reasons to up the tax rate. We are one of the State for the heaviest gasoline tax ( besides Hawaii and New York I believe ), 10% sales tx, school levy, increase property tax ( up 21% from a year ago ) plus many proposed new tax in the pipeline.

Weather is okay, I don't mind and really should give credit to those utility workers and law enforcement agencies whom worked back to back 12 hour shift in the last few weeks to keep things moving.

We fear in a few decades in not sooner, the water supply will be the big issue, rather than too much rainfall.

Yep, the desert area will get the brush of the Pacific storm off the coastline, not quite as bad as the Bay Area, but you should have some moisture going your way through the month of April.

Enjoy your retirement as I might miss mine.

I took this video yesterday from the wash which is right by where we live. This wash was bone dry the day before

It is where the golf course has their driving range, It is about 225 yards across

Most rain in 75 years in Coachella valley

Went by today and there was just a small stream

many roads are still closed because of flooding and debris. Many major roads do not have bridges so when this happens you have to find another route

Living in Seattle area it rained like this all the time with no flooding but here they do not have storm drains every where so streets have lower areas to divert water. You have to remember to slow down at certain major streets because of the troughs for runoff, great places to collect hubcaps, oh yea, they stopped making those didn't they??

Jog my memory a bit since it has been 30 years or so. Isn't there a big truck stop in Coachella on I-10 that has a giant dinosaur ? I remember we used to stop there and I think it was featured in one of the Pee Wee Herman movies.

LOL hubcaps that is a good one. Some cars ( cheaper ones) have what they call wheel covers which ain't nothing like what you and I and the rest of the old farts call hubcaps. They are made out of cheap plastic. LOL my neighbor has a Hyundai he bought brand new 20 years or so ago and it still has the cheap plastic wheel covers ( surprise) and they are so old and sun baked they have no chrome color and are yellow . But yeah the factories have not made real steel or aluminum hub caps for 30 years now. Damn!! I am getting old

Random brain nugget on a snowy Saturday as I watch Nascar qualifying from Daytona:

I used to be a big Nascar fan but I think it's gotten pretty boring in recent years. But watching Xfinity series qualifying this morning and I love that they are letting the manufacturers put some cars on the track with some personality again. The new Mustang looks great... and the Toyota Supra is BADASS looking. Looks like a race car! The Camaro, on the hand, looks like a damn taxi cab next to the Ford and the Toyota.

went several times for over a week with no power, had to pull my mom out of nursing home as they had no power for over a week since we had 2 gas fireplaces that still worked without power

Btw , its suppose to rain here in the desert off and on for couple weeks....

I learned this from my days as a Volunteer Fireman in the Upstate of SC during ice storms. Those utility guys earn every dime they are paid riding those boom trucks up in all the snow and ice fixing those lines

Thumbs up to those working the lines during the snow/ice storm. News reported one utility worker crushed by fallen tree and passed away this past weeks. Can't imagine the risk they have been taking working under those condition. All those complained of losing their power should understand the working condition these heroes are under. But as usual, people only see their own hardship and complain whenever inconvenient themselves.

A side note which I over hear yesterday. A young man from our neighboring State took the opportunity of our snow storm and made a small fortune with the enterprising action.

He drove a pickup truck equipped with a snow plow all the way from Idaho, advertised on Craigslist and Facebook to clear parking lot cul-de-sac or neighborhood street, driveways for $75-$300 an hour. Knowing that the City and County utility workers would be overwhelmed and only ale to clear the major roadways and the bus lines. He made over $50K in two weeks..

All the snow plow and landscape equipment rentals were out in the area ( based on $800-$1,000 per day rate ).

If I were 30 years younger, I'd be making some quick bucks also.

I have never been to Coachella, its the other end of the valley so cant tell you

WE used to own a 76 Coupe Deville that had the heavy wire spoke wheel hub caps, they were beautiful, had them stolen off the car twice, they were expensive back then, cant imagine what they would cost now, insurance covered the replacements

We now return you to our regular programming...

I quit keeping up with it when Big E got killed never had the enthusiasm for it anymore--- That was still around the time I quit racing dirt-- Him getting killed did not have anything to do with me quitting--- It was costing too much to field a car anymore even doing things like I was doing it and I had already bought this place at the beach. I figured I was getting old when Gordon and Little E retired. In fact the kid who sat on the pole this year I never heard of him.

I sometimes wonder if it’s due to us getting older and the generation that is actively involved in sports at the professional level now is so much younger than we are. Their ideas, cars, bats, clubs, balls, RULES seem to have changed so much that it’s hard to identify with them.

Just my random thoughts as I drink coffee, smoke a bowl of Captain Black and curse the weather forecast for the day. Yep, more wet stuff on the way.

There was a post in “Thrift Shop” where someone saw a Cleveland Hibore. That’s was my frontline driver until a few years ago, and I still have a backup. But I got to thinking how weird it will be when this forum will be discussing who has the complete weight kit for an M2, the sole-plate differences in a W/S triton, the differences in AP2 model years, Scotty Cameron Putters. Instead of decals and whipping twine it’ll be shaft adapters and adjustment wrenches.

Kinda weird to think about how time marches on.

Speaking of time marching on, I tried to watch Daytona but in Finnish time the first red flag took us past 2:00 am and after that I had to sleep. So I did. I think Hamlin won so good for him, although I haven’t followed the sport in years. I’ll watch Indy though.

I think when that rolls around most of us will be in the great beyond or too old to give two hoots. But I can see the topic now in the year 2045---- Do You think the Twisted Sister face TM was better than the Callaway Jailbird Driver???? or Does anyone have a Soleplate and weight kit for a Wilson Triton Driver???

Something super satisfying about a pipe on a cool, wet day. The leaves here have long lost that good, leafy, fall smell but there is nothing finer than sitting on a blowdown in the fall woods and puffing a pipe. I put it above even most experiences I have had on the golf course.

I can remember after being here at the beach 5 years or so I was up in Charlotte ( where I was born and raised) in the fall. I was playing golf with my lifelong friend and I was sniffing the fall leaves. He thought my nose was stopped up or something. I told him naah I was just taking in and savoring the smell of fall. I had missed it not being off the beach in 5 years for the fall season. Of course now I get it in the fall because for the last 5 years I have been traveling 2 times a day 5 days a week to the Darlington SC area which is 80 miles inland.
