Yeah I know it's hard to believe but the motherload of all trips is about to hit GOLFWRX !!!!

Am I being fit? nope.

Am I playing sweet courses? nope.

Maybe I'm going to get an R&D tour or a tour van experience? nada.

So you ask, J13, what the heck are you going to be doing out there in Sin City?

Well ladies and gentleman Callaway thought it would be a good idea (and I agree 100% :-) ) to have someone from our community experience the making of their 2014 Callaway commercials. YEAH exactly! Whaaaa???? Best part is think about who's in those commercials.. YEP exactly! Their stable of PGA Tour players will be in the house and as the Turtle Man would say LIVE ACTION!!!!

So lets do a quick breakdown because that was a lot to digest, myself included.

Callaway has me on this...

Doing this....

Going here.....

To hang with guys like this....

And Callaway hopes I don't end up on one of these!

107259415d302523efbd449fe2bf32af.jpg

So with all that said i'm going to do my best to fill everyone in with as much info & pictures as humanly POSSIBLE. Most of the day I will be at the shoots so my ability to upload pics ect.. will be limited but I will do as much as I can from my phone until the evening.

Note: ALL INFO will be added to the first few posts I have reserved. No hunting for info, or pics. All updates will be time stamped so you know whats new and whats not. I will be reading the thread as much as possible so if there are questions just shoot and I will try to get them answered.

So it's game time and the first ever (that i know of) GolfWrx trip on location for a commercial shoot is underway. Also if I don't get arrested, you may see me in a commercial hiding behind a tree trying to get my 15 seconds of fame ;-)

Calm before the storm. 830 shoot meeting with the gang. I was a fly on the wall (with a beer) for this one. Got to hear a lot of great info about the shoot and what players will be where and when.

More Apex irons

This pic the Apex pro is in the front and apex in the back. You can see how they frame the ball and the size difference which isn't much. Also offset in the higher irons is VERY similar. The biggest difference is in the low irons. These are 6irons. The second pic the pro is the bottom one.

Update : tuesday night

Guys thanks for all the support and YES Phil and Colsaerts are tomorrow so I can't wait. Today was Freddie Jac who is a super nice guy, Woodland (who I spend a lot of time with and I'll get to that), Alvaro Quiros who doesn't stop smiling despite not sleeping for 24 hours because of a flight from Europe, and Sang Moon Bae who to be honest didn't get to formally meet as I was on the other side of the course while he was shooting. Did run into him at lunch and he's a funny guy, I can't wait until his first Odyssey commercial runs it's hilarious. Also there was another player there today but I can't comment but lets say he's a great pickup ;-) Also another player yesterday that can't be mentioned is another BIG pickup but again can't talk about him and they are both still under contract until 2013 ends.

So yes, the Callaway Talks with Harry was a blast and to be honest I wasn't that nervous. I felt pretty comfortable and we did it in one take so for all those naysayers you can kiss my ..... :-) haha love the abuse. I also got to pick an office tip of the week to do with Matt which was a ball of fun. They asked me to come up with something so I did and I can't wait to post it. Basically I will post the Callaway Talks and the Office tip here so everyone will see it when it's off the editing room floor.

OK DRUMROLL............... Nerves? You think the Callaway talks would have made you nervous ? Well at lunch Greg Sabella came up to me and said "how would you like to be in one of the commercial shoots with Gary Woodland as his caddie? " YEAH WHAAAAAA??????? My answer? HELL YES. Fella's I was in an Odyssey shoot for a commercial where I walk up the fairway with Gary, hand him his putter then help read his putt, pull the pin ect.... Directors, producers you name it and not to mention the crowd around watching the shoots. IT WAS FREAKING AWESOME. AGAIN AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best part was Gary did a no look flip back with the ball in the commercial and I snagged it, cleaned it and gave it back. It was sweet man. And let me say Gary is a great guy. He was telling me how excited he was for this season to get going as his short game has dramatically improved which has been the weak link for him. I also asked him about his Cally blades and he said they are perfect and cannot be improved on. It was funny because the Callaway team spoke to the players about blades and they all said the same thing. Don't change the shape, don't mess with anything haha. Of course if you can work in a bit more forgiveness that's always a plus but overall they said leave them alone.

So needless to say the day was something I"ll never forget and I"m hoping I make it past the cutting room floor. I'm still on cloud guys honestly not sure what else to say. Crazy. I will have more photos once I get them from Callaway from the commercial. Chad may post some so you can see some still shots. Ok have to eat dinner but I'm going to throw some pics up afterwards.

Reserved for the trip breakdown.

VEGAS

Where to start. As you can see from the pics the trip was amazing. Nothing I'm going to say in this review will do it justice but I'll do my best. Starting off with Hipcheck letting me know I was being sent on a top secret mission to borrow I mean "recover" Phil Mickelson's bag oh wait that was my mission not Hips ;-) Seriously when I got the call from Hip I was pumped and started to count the days. Personally I think waiting is the most excruciating part of any trip but patience is a virtue right? But finally the day had arrived and off I went to Sin City.

So Vegas, I arrive at the Aria Resort and Casino and my eyes looked like a slot machine. Instead of cherry's, bells, and bars my eyes had irons, drivers, and PGA Tour players. Honestly my head was spinning but I pulled it together long enough to find Rihanna in the lobby and grab my room key. And let me say I think she had a heater going at the craps table because she gave me the key and was gone lol ;-) Anyway for the next few hours I got things together, walked the strip, saw Darth Vader doing some inappropriate things (could have been Robo not sure), and watched some football as it was Sunday. Keep in mind Callaway folks were flying in at various times that day so the pre shoot meeting wasn't until 8:30pm.

So several hours later I got the call from Chad telling me he's landed and to meet him downstairs in 30 for some dinner before the pre shoot meeting. So the time comes and I go downstairs to meet Chad and he walks up to me and says "dude I locked myself out of my room" my response was " you've been here for 12 seconds how is that possible" He shakes his head and gets in line for a new key. Awesome. lol So we attempt to eat dinner which was sort of a disaster because of slow service and end up getting it to go as we were now running late. So off to the meeting we went which was being held in the ultra exclusive Sky suites (Sabella is a baller). So Chad and I walk in, me with a mouthful of a chicken parm slider and Chad was terroring apart a burger. Everyone stopped, looked at us, and lets us know how happy they were that we could finally join them lol we deserved it.

So the meeting is essentially a final run through of the who, what, when, where, and how, the shoot is going to be conducted. Again just a final rundown to make sure everyone's on the same page. More importantly the Red Sox game was on which created random outbursts of support from Scotty G. No doubt he's a happy guy with the Sox's season. So the meeting finishes up and the beer comes out as a post meeting nightcap. Some people went downstairs to play cards some took bubble baths (Harry) :-) and others (yours truly) logged onto golf forums to update members of GolfWRX. Overall though no one was going crazy in Vegas with a meeting time of 6am in the lobby and 7am on location. Everyone was there was having a good time but knew it was a work trip.

So here was the schedule:

Monday
Location: SouthShore, Lake Las Vegas
Pros: Chris Kirk, Tommy Gainey, Patrick Reed & SG
Call Time: 7am – this is an estimate as we're still finalizing schedules but please plan to be there from 7am to 6pm daily

Tuesday
Location: Dragon Ridge
Pros: Freddie Jacobson, Alvaro Quiros, Gary Woodland, Sang Moon Bae & SG
Call Time: 7am – this is an estimate as we're still finalizing schedules but please plan to be there from 7am to 6pm daily

Wednesday
Location: Painted Desert
Pros: Phil Mickelson, Nicolas Colsaerts
Call Time: 7am – this is an estimate as we're still finalizing schedules but please plan to be there from 7am to 6pm daily

*SG = Special guest aka new Cally staffers ;-)

UPDATE Wed 10/23 AND CONCLUSION

So here we are at the conclusion of one of the most amazing trips any golfer could ask for. Each day was filled hanging out with some of the top players in the game and I could do anything I wanted. Yeah crazy huh? My first reaction was to go for the bags which I tried to do if they had it with them. Keep in mind this was a shoot for the 2014 line so it wasn't imperative that they had their sticks. After I rifled through bags I then tried to follow the lead of the Callaway guys especially on the first day. I didn't want to get in the way and I certainly didn't want to get in front of the light reflection guys which I did about 437 times. They are everywhere with those large reflective boards just blinding everyone. I think they do it on purpose but I digress ;-)

So each day production teams were at about 6-8 stations around the course. Some on tee boxes, some in fairways, and some on the greens. Keep in mind they were shooting Callaway and Odyssey TV. It was extremely cool to see guys go from station to station and hit different shots especially since they had a club handed to them that was stock everything. Funny thing was they were still throwing darts. You could see them working it out in their head. By the 5 or 6th shot they were hitting sweet shoots with whatever was in there hands. Really cool to witness.

Speaking of cool things to witness I saw a head to head battle between Woodland and Quiros on one of the tee's with the new big stick. Unfortunately Woodland wasn't feeling 100% as he was battling a stomach bug but he was still MASHING the ball. It actually all started as Woodland was shooting a scene hitting the new driver and Quiros was just watching. Well eventually he walked up beside me so I said to him "I know you can hit it further then this Woodland guy" He looked at me and smiled and said "Of course I can especially today with him being sick" then he started laughing. Eventually they both proceeded to anihalate balls over this mountain. Honestly I think the balls are still in the air as I type this. It was amazing to see the launch of these things. I'm talking 15-16* of launch with no spin. Funniest part about this impromptu long drive competition was after about 20 balls one of the Directors said "hey do we know if houses are on the other side of this mountain? " Everyone just stopped and had that "Oh $hit" face and immediately pulled up the satellite pics of the location. Luckily it was just a construction site with only a few people moving stone but it certainly stopped everyone in their tracks. Hilarious.

Overall it was great to just watch these guys in action especially since they aren't actors lol. Trying to be natural but at the same time say different tag lines was hilarious. I wish I had a blooper reel because you wouldn't stop laughing. Each day had it's highlights and since I could only be in one place at a time I couldn't catch everything. Some players I just didn't get to spend time with because the shoot's were all over the course but the players I did I want to give a quick rundown of my experience with them and their thoughts on the equipment.

Gary Woodland- Great guy, someone you could watch a game with and have a pint. Just happens to play some really good golf as his day job. I spend the most one on one time with him as I shot that Odyssey commercial scenese with him. Had some great conversations none of which I can repeat here :-) sorry. As for equipment he's still using the Razr Hawk driver so I asked him if he was going to switch to the new one and his response was simple "I hope I do" He really loved the look of it and you could tell he wanted some new tech in the bag but he just mashes his Razr Hawk with a 100g shaft, yes a 100g shaft. Irons he just loves his razr X blades but was extremely impressed with the Apex Pro. Not sure if he'll switch as he's a die hard blade guy but so was Phil. Putter wise he loved the new Odyssey lineup especially the ones we have all seen with the question marks on them. He loved the quick roll on them as did I

Alvaro Quiros- One of the most positive guys I've ever met. He never stopped smiling despite not sleeping for 24 hours because of a red eye flight from Europe. He's just one of those people that you can't have a bad day around. Impossible. He too loved the new driver and I see it in his 2014 bag. Irons, he loved the Apex's. He was hitting silly long 6 irons that most people would be thrilled with if that was their driver.

Patrick Reed- Him and his wife were nice although I didn't get to spend a lot of time talking to them. I did see him hit quite a few shots but I was flying around in a cart half the time with Chad as we were also doing some equipment shots with Matt. Patrick also crushes the ball and at one point he asked him they wanted him to hit farther. Not many people can ask that question and be completely serious. He had another 20yds in reserve if he needed it. Just shows these guys go for accuracy. His wife was very nice and she truly is the same size as that big Callaway staff bag. You can tell she's in great shape so she could probably walk 36 a day with that thing and do laps around us fools.

Tommy Gainey- Here's a guy who appreciates where he's at. A commercial shoot although cool to us is just one of many things PGA Tour players are responsible for off the course. Tommy flat out said whatever you need me to do I got it. He made a comment about how this is part of his job just like shooting a 66 in a tournament. And his swing looks just as "creative" in person as it does on TV but guys he can CRUSH the ball. He was hitting bombs with the new driver and after he was shown the in's and outs of the new tech he said to Callaway "your R&D guys aren't fooling around are they." Also the guy was a genius out of the bunkers with the Mac Daddy 2 wedges. He did an office tip with Matt and almost holed 3 in a row.

Phil Mickelson- What can you say about Phil, the guy is one of the best players to ever pick up a set of clubs and I tossed around the pigskin with him. It was a highlight I'll never forget and I thank Callaway and GolfWrx for providing that opportunity. One question asked a lot about him is "Is Phil really that nice or is it just for the camera's? " Well if you want my honest opinion I would say it's both. Phil is a pro's pro and knows part of his job is to be an amassador of the game. Don't get me wrong he's an extremely nice guy but he also understands as a role model and legend of the game he needs to go above and beyond to connect with fans. He's naturally a social person in fact on the shoot he kept egging people on to talk sports or tell some stories. So I don't think it's a stretch for him to connect with fans the way he does and I think that's why he can keep it up after all these years. He's like Palmer in a sense that he owes the game and he knows it.

As for equipment Phil is a very different player even from other PGA Tour guys. He was talking about how he's always struggled with spin off the tee. He said it's hard for him to get under 2800 rpms with the proper launch and always has been. Luckily with the new driver that problem is now gone. He was loving the new tech in the driver. Honestly he hit it and hugged the driver. It was hilarious. As for irons he really liked the Apex Pro's. But with Phil as I've learned you just never know. He bounces back and forth between the blades and Xforged now so my guess would be the Apex Pro's take the Xforged spot.

My take on the new gear - Callaway had a great year in 2013 and the Xhot fwy's set a new standard in fwy wood performance. You also had the Xhot irons that sold like hotcakes along with the Xforged irons that made their made into more then a few PGA Tour players bags. On the Odyssey side you had the reintroduction of the Odyssey White Hot insert and also the Versa alignment system so it was a big year on both sides. You could say it's a year that you love to have but also hate to follow.

Luckily for us Callaway has improved. I'm not talking in one or two categories but in EVERY single category. The Apex irons are that good and honestly if I had to choose between the Apex and Apex pro's right now I don't know what I would pick. The Xhot line continues to improve with better looks and hotter faces. The new hybrids are head and shoulders above last years and I was told the CT on the heel and toe are actually the same as the sweetspot on last years. So the center is literally driver CT and let me say I hit them and verified that. It was insanely long and I could see some players not needing a fairway wood. The driver is brilliant but can't comment much. The Callaway R&D team just knocked it out of the park and are about to take center stage in the race for innovation. Lets just leave it at that for now ;-) Odyssey's new line is amazing and also includes some new models that are pretty darn cool. The new high end line that we've all seen in Gregs pics roll the ball beautifully and feel great. I will have one no way around it. They are also naturally expanding on their successful lines like the Versa and Tank so people will have more options which is always a good thing. I might give one of the Tanks a try as I beat out Johhny Rodriguez and Matty Haneline in a putting competition with one. I believe it was actually Jason Finley's so thanks Jason ;-).

So that's it folks I'm spent haha. It was an amazing trip and I can't thank the Callaway team enough. They have truly improved on everything and I didn't think I would be able to say that. I will stake my reputation on that all kidding aside. I can't wait for you guys to see what I've seen and get to hit it. Be prepared Callaway is going to be in a LOT of bags next year. And oh how I can't wait for the new driver to hit the market. EPIC.

Have a blast J, I'm sure it'll be good catching up with Harry, Chad and the rest of the crew, let alone getting a chance to see Phil (again) and the rest of their staff. I think you need to challenge Woodland to a long drive contest for kicks.
