Spent some more range time with the i20s. They are easily as forgiving as my R11s were and I have picked up a few yards in distance as well, despite the i20s being one degree weaker (may be the shaft). Absolutely in love with these things!

For a set of players cavity backs, the offset when you get the the longer irons (longer than the 6) is a bit extreme.

I liked the short irons, very solid and high ball-flight, good sole grind, etc...

but, for someone who may play irons now without much offset, it can be quite a shock, in my opinion.

Some flavor of the month driver.
Some driving iron for Links courses.

A hybrid to save my bad shots.
Titleist blades when I feel lucky otherwise something more forgiving.
A Vokey wedge or 2.
I hate every one of my 17 putters.

I agree with this. I don't think I would consider the i20 a "players cavity back". I would call it a GI iron...nothing wrong with that, just saying...

Usually the "i" series are a bit more compact, etc...but the long irons have equally the same amount of offset as the g series for sure. It was a bit disappointing to me. I'm sure some love them, case in point, one guy I play with regularly hits them very well, albeit he only games the 7-gw as he is a hybrid fiend, but they just weren't for me.

Looking at the specs, the i20 long irons have almost 25% less offset then the G series and 30% more offset than the s55's..........so right in between.

Angel Cabrera didn't have a problem with the i20 3 iron at the Masters.........he blasted that thing.

I just played 36 with them today (first time swinging them) and like them so far. I'm trying to figure out distance (they seem a half club to full club longer than my old King Cobras), are more forgiving on toe hits, high hits and fat hits, but are by no means miracle workers. The 4 iron and 5 iron (both bent 1º strong) have great launch and flight with the CFS X shaft. I like those a lot. I just hope they go as far as I'd like so I can comfortably get down to a 14 club bag. I only hit the long clubs a couple of times and didn't get a good read on distance. I'd like 210-215 out of the 4 iron and 195-200 out of the 5. I might be 5 yards short. I don't know. My expectations are also for "summer" distance, so maybe that's all it is. It was in the 60s and 70s today. I found I had the opportunity to hit my 6 iron on about 4 "plays 180" shots from the tee and I had one clean swipe that was 180+, one slight miss that was probably 175-178 and a pair of high toe hits that both still probably managed close to 160. With my old clubs I bet the slight miss would have lost 10-15 yards, and the toe hits would have lost 30, so these are about a 33-50% improvement on lost distance for mishits. I'll also note that I can hit the high-bounce pitching wedge off of a tight hard nearly no grass lie for a 30-40 yard pitch onto the green. I was scared of blading it or chunking it fat, and it worked fine with a little forward lean on the shaft. I'm kind of realizing my "150 club" might be my 9 iron in this set. It was an 8 in my old set.

Quick somebody tell Bubba, Hunter, Angel and Lee they are playing game improvement G Series drivers and fairway clubs! :)

They probably don't read threads on WRX and may want to switch to something more appropriate for their skill set.

Just saying lol.

If a club works and has as strong a following, will it perform better or worse if we classify it?

I've played a lot of clubs over the years in many different categories and some worked others didn't. My scoring ability was not improved because the classification mirrored the image I had of myself as a golfer. I do believe the gear we use can help us score better. So yes I think the archer will score better with the best fit gear the archer can afford.

Some clubs cross lines and allow high, mid and low cap golfers to enjoy. Why does classification always end up being an issue?

Is it a cavity back? Yes, why don't we just leave it at that?

Sorry rant over, stepping away from the soap box.

Just saying :)

I have to agree I love the looks of blades an play at a 4 but here winter sucks and I lose my swing and I need more help in irons with forgiveness so I could care less on the category as long as it helps me...I found once I got rid my tour stuff an TP models my mishits were way better and my scores dropped!

What PGA layer plays a full set of G15s?

ping, golf digest.com, maltby ratings, etc etc etc refer to them as a full players set...I'll take that and my own experience as a 1 HDCP playing them over you all.

I believe Billy Mayfair played a full set of G15's.

Regardless, the i20's are great clubs for a very broad range of the golfing population.
Frankly I don't care what iron classification they are considered as. My point is that just because an iron is played on tour, doesn't necessarily determine the type/class of club it is.

I have hit multiple sets of irons, pretty much everything from 2 years ago until now. I game the I20s and was never a cast fan before this set. I played and loved the 2008 AP2's and the 712s but I keep going back to the I20s. I have never been a huge Ping fan, tried the S56s, hit them alright but I wasn't playing enough for me to consider them forgiving. The I20s are superb in every aspect, I play scratch and these irons work the ball just as good as anything and feel amazing doing it. Miss hits for me typically only lose 5 yards at absolute most and I love how these get the ball in the air. I have my set matched up with some True Temper Black/Gold X-flex shafts and the combo is perfect..High, penetrating ballflight- no pin is hidden for me here or tucked in Florida. Was never really a high ball hitter until I got this combo and they just hit and land ever so softly on the dance floor. I may sound like a fan boy but the truth is, like I mentioned earlier I was never a huge Ping fan. If I had to choose another iron other than these I20s it would be the 712 Ap2's but these I20s are too easy to hit and feel like butter for me to think about getting rid of them. From one Ping I20 lover to a soon to be new one, get them bent to your specs and I promise you will be pleasantly surprised how these irons perform.

Are there any irons that KJ has not played? :)

I am not knocking him at all. I think it is so cool that he plays a lot of different equipment. It would be great to be able to play at such a high level and have access to all that great golf equipment!

Have you guys seen his garage? I remember a write-up on here of just THOUSANDS of clubs that he tests in his garage/make-shift office. I applaud him for going through and testing stuff on his own to be sure it is what he wants and performs the part. More players should do the same, couldn't tell you the countless amount of players I have run into that have no clue what a kick point is on a shaft or why they really even have to know. Really funny

Finally got mine in and fitted! Omg I am EXTREMELY impressed 1 range session I could do it all. An I love the cfs shafts they just launch and carry! Long irons so easy to hit and long and they are workable man these are the best pings I've ever hit maybe even better than my s59s! Wow!

That god for this thread. I have to keep coming back to it over and over to reaffirm that I have good clubs. With the new "We are In the Ping House thread" and some big launch tomorrow and then the umpteen S55 reviews, it is hard to take it. I am doomed when the i25 comes out.

A good friend of mine has improved greatly this year playing i20's. However this weekend, two of the inserts in his set fell completely out and were lost. He contacted PING and they told him just to send back the ones that had the lost inserts. I was considerably surprised as I would have thought they'd have wanted to check all the others as they are probably also likely to fall out due to poor glue jobs on them as well.. He loves those irons but wow, how tough is it to properly glue in some one piece inserts?
