Starting a new adventure . . . Minimalist Golf

I still get lots of odd looks when I go out with my minimalist setup. 6 clubs, no bag, 6 balls, a towel, and my GPS attached to my glove/hat. It's always fun getting paired up with a group that has 50 pound staff bags loaded for war with every imaginable accessory, while I'm walking down the fairway with my clubs in my hand (Silo 6-club carrier) and posting better scores.

Current thinking for this year:

Ping Rapture mini drive

Ping G25 5-wood

Tad Moore hickory Victor 3, 5, 7

Titleist AP2 PW; Vokey 54* SW

Chicopee hickory putter.

That's 8 clubs. I could get along without the PW, and I could also substitute a hickory niblick for the Vokey.

Love the combination of hickory and modern. I have a set of Tad’s OA hickory irons - might slot them for my 7-9-Gw.

Just an older guy with 7 or 8 clubs and a MacKenzie Sunday Walker bag

Still trying to figure out my set up for this year. Grabbed 8 random clubs and today I played 9 holes with

13.5* 3w

Ping eye2 1 iron

Rogue 4 iron

7, 9, Gap, SW one length f7s

Putter

I hit 2 balls here and there off the tee playing around with the 1 iron, but could of easily dropped it for only 7 clubs. Playing one ball would of shot right around where I usually shoot, and it felt easy. Love not having any second thoughts on club selection.

Mashie, spade mashie, mashie niblick? (I have a couple sets of those as well.) I prefer the niblick from that set - it has a flange and is very playable.

I've been thinking about what I could do to reduce my 10 club set further and I have now spec'd my perfect 8 club set...

LW/SW - 58* - 64 lie - 35" - 115g shaft - D5

Pw (blade) - 48* - 63 lie - 35.75" - 108g shaft - D4

8i (players) - 39* - 62 lie -36.75" - 102g - D3

6i (GI) - 31* - 61 lie - 38" - 96g - D2

4i (SGI/hybrid) - 24* - 59.5 lie- 39.5" - 89g - D1

5wd - 18* - 41.25 - 79g - D2

mini Driver - 13* - 43.25 - 69g -D3

Been wondering what my next project would be... This will be a fun experiment.

Now that it is cold I walk and play with my sunday bag.

7 clubs in, including the putter.

I rotate two settings:

- Driver, hybrid, 6i, 8i, PW and SW

- 3W, 5i, 7i, 9i, UW and LW

I find the first setting more performing, but I like rotating it during the week end in order to use all the clubs in the bag.

Anybody play a multi-day bucket list trip with a minimalist bag?

I easily could have... Went to Cabot Cliffs for 4 days and really didn't touch my fairway wood or hybrid. Over the 4 days I easily only used a handful of irons, 2 wedges, and my driver and putter.

Planning a trip to Ireland in the fall and going to take only 8-10 clubs in a Sunday/ultralight bag. It’s not a fully golf focused trip but still planing to play a few rounds. I figure between traveling and walking all my rounds that it makes sense to make things a bit easier on myself. Can’t imagine it will make it any less fun.

Even if it was an 8+ round bucket list purely golf trip I think I would do it. Especially if flying and planning to walk all or most of the rounds. The only reservation I would have is if there were going to be a lot of money games/competitions going on. And even then, it gets back to the question of if you would actually score any worse with a minimalist set. I just think I might regret it a little if I ended up not having the right club for a particular shot in a high stakes/high pressure situation.

I think it is almost easier to play with a minimalist bag on these types of trips. Why? Lots of carting the clubs around and they're much easier to manage everywhere else besides the course. Also, on unfamiliar courses you never really know the yardages you'll get, so it's always kind of a guessing game. For me anyway, these trips are not about scores shot, it's about being there. I agree with the previous poster, if the trip was with a group of fellas that were all about the gambling, then I'd have to consider the full bag...

Played Whistling Straits and Erin Hills one weekend last summer. I took few extra clubs (4 wd and 8i) - and then adjusted the setup based on the par 3 lengths. Turned out to be more trouble than really worth it - could have just stayed with normal setup and played just as well.

Still all minimalist here. I can play 9 in 40-50 minutes and get to work on time in the morning. Here’s my current setup:

225+ Driver

200 5W

175 5H

150 7i

125 9i

100 50*

75 58*

Putter

I’ve found that when I factor in wind, elevation, how I’m playing, etc. there is always a club that works for the yardage. If I hit a perfect shot in perfect conditions every time I could see having a full set gapped 10 yards or so apart.

I do the same thing with wedge gapping. It forces me to be creative with both the 50 and the 58, I think it’s helped me score better

Not really. Either take one club more and hit a 3/4 swing or take one club less and step on it a bit.

Started yesterday with 44 points....still didn't win, some bandit got 47!!!! Anyway, off winter tees and mats but my set up was:

Driver

5 wood

7 wood

6,8,pw & sw

Putter

Now the 7 wood hasn't been behaving at all... So this Saturday I'm replacing it with my 4 iron. I can manipulate irons better than my 7 wood which I just hit fat!

I like a hybrid in that spot for when I get jammed in the rough. The Cobra (with rails) has been super helpful
