Over the last 30 years, how many players have won 5 times in a year?

I'll go with Tiger for player of the year.

Stenson has played great, but he's still two wins behind Tiger. Think about it, everyone is talking about how great he played this year, and he still is 2 wins behind. As for Phil, I've read a number of articles/posts celebrating his 2nd place finish at the US Open. I don't think playing stupid golf should be celebrated. There are no points for 2nd place. Scott played great at the Masters and now has won a couple of events against fields that are similar to web.com fields.
I suppose we should ignore Jack's 19 runner up spot's in Major's then, It's the Major's that Matter, Just ask Tiger!
Jack's 19 runner ups are discussed because it highlights his consistency in majors over his career (I won't get into the strength of field discussion), but when discussing player of the year, we shouldn't talk about someone finishing second.
Phil could have won the US Open and he didn't. He didn't win because he didn't play good golf when it mattered. There is no reason that we should watch his performance and say "well he played stupid golf, but it was really really exciting to watch, so let's count that towards player of the year voting."

Stenson isn't close to Woods and Scott. He's far above them. When you win both the US and Euro PGA titles, you are the world player of the year.

Stenson is ahead of tiger, but I can't separate him from Scott. Scotts masters win, plus the last two weeks in additio to contending evey time he teed it up is hard to overlook. I would throw hefty in the mix too. He won the Scottish Open before his Open win. High finish in US Open and Masters adds weight to his claims for world poty.

Not sure who will win World Player of the Year

Where is the dinner/award presentation?

I'm thinking Luger's. Hope Phil brings the dinosuar egg, AS brings the broomstick, TW brings LV, maybe Stenson will get wasted and jump in a punch bowl in his underwear. Where is me tux...gotta let out the pants, I think.

Stenson ahead of Tiger? But Tiger won more tournaments? Isn't the point of golf to win?

And you're right about Scott contending each week. It was very impressive. 6 top 10s, 10 top 25s. Pretty good, almost as good as Tiger's 8 top 10s (5 wins) and 10 top 25s.

Michelson high finishes in the US Open and The Masters??? When did a 54th place finish become a high finish? I know you WANT him to have a good finish in the Masters, but he didn't actually do it.

Sounds about right. But first I'll spike it with some scotch. Always carry a flask...2 if possible.

Easily a case for Stenson
Largely the most consistent golfer plus end of the season titles on both tours

Tiger's is self explanatory
All five wins came in world class wins (maybe or maybe not torrey pines)
The Player's, WGC's Cadillac and Bridgestone, Arnold Palmer Inv, Farmers Insurance Open
OWGR #1 again by a large margin
Money title and scoring average

Phil has a good shot too
Open Championship
Waste Management Open
Scottish Open
2nd at the US Open

I think only two of Scott's wins can be looked at and he should be on a slightly lower tier than the above three
Masters champion
The Barclay's
The wins in Australia had extremely weak fields and it would have been a shame if he didn't win.

Tiger is player of the year because 5 big wins. No doubt Stenson was unbeatable in the final events of the year winning two playoff events and the RTD Final, but in my book that doesn't trump 2 WGCs, a Players, Arnie's event, and Torrey Pines. I find it quite amusing seeing so many people hand it to Stenson now when they wouldn't hand it to Tiger because he didn't win a major... Scott's year was great too, but the Aussie event don't carry much weight, let's say he won the equivalent of three PGA events including a major, about the same as Phil except Scott was much more consistent.

Don't get me wrong, I'm marveling at Stenson right now and if Tiger had won 5 lesser events I'd probably give it to him.

5 big wins? LOL! Yeah like Bay Hill. Tiger was not close in any majors. Stenson is World Player of the Year by far.

How can there be a serious "player of the year" to come outside of Scott, Rose, Mickelson, or Dufner?

Being that Scott and Rose are the ones outside of the US, it's between the two.

In the US, Mickelson edges out Dufner.

Thanks for putting Luke Donald's 2011 season in perspective. Although I don't seem to recall you complaining about his being voted POY. Hmmmmm.

Well, that's the PGA Tour POY. Tiger also won the PGA of America POY which is completely OBJECTIVE. But don't let facts interrupt your narrative.

Stenson has won the DP Tour Championship and Tour Championship, was second in the Open Championship, Bridgestone Invitational and third in the PGA Championship. Those are pretty much the biggest and best events since July and he has contended them all.

Does the season start in July? Shouldn't your "analysis" be for the entire season?

The Stenson and Scott threads here have me thinking about which one of these guys (or someone else) would win such an award if there was one (not sure if there is one and pardon me if I missed it)? Also, I'm talking outside of the Player of the year that Tiger won.

FIFA(soccer) has such an award which is voted by the media and coaches/captains of every FIFA nation but sadly this has become more of an award about popularity.

If we can stick to the facts and perhaps give weight for certain titles some of these guys have won around the world, how would you place the top three of Stenson, Scott, and Tiger BASED ON THE CALENDER YEAR AND WORLWIDE EVENTS?

I would go with:

1. Stenson-won both overall cups on either side of the pond
2. Tiger-5 wins on the PGA
3. Scott-Masters mainly plus the extra wins
I would give my vote to Henrik Stenson ....not slighting TW.... but overall Stenson earned it with multiple world wins and winning Fed ex cup and Race to Dubai is impressive for sure

Based on this thread it seems to me there would be a lot of 1st place votes for Stenson so far.

Here's a thought:

Can we do a vote and see who would win this inaugural golf WPOTY according to our WRX members here? I would propose setting up a vote based on 5 points for your first pick, 3pts for your second place pick, and 1 point for your third pick. Hence, from now on please list your top three and if you like just go back and edit your post if you haven't ranked them yet. Please keep the off track remarks to a minimal and remember to cast your vote in a order of three names. Just throwing out a single name is not enough and any post that does not have three names in a order will not count. We'll add up the points in the end.

Mickelson and Scott are the only players of the 4 you listed that would even have a shot at POY. Even then their year hasn't been as good as Tiger's or Stenson's. Tiger with 5 wins(2 WGC's and a Players) and Stenson claiming both the FedEx AND the Euro money list.
Don't get me wrong, majors are nice when looking back at a career. But I don't think that they define anyone as a player.

Yeah on reflection Stenson further down. He only really got hot in the silly season big money events. Tigers 5 wins is big, and if you consider one of them was a Players is even bigger. IMO a Players is a bigger deal than the Fedex Cup regardless of the idiculous money. If I were a pro and could have anyone's year it would between Scott and Phil. Multiple wins plus major equals a helluva great year.

Like anything in this life, opinions and emotions vary. Probably too difficult to call over the season based on results alone. No disrespect to Stenson but have never been a fan - always enjoyed Woods, Mcilroy, Mickelson, Rose, Donald etc. However, I did go to the Race to Dubai this weekend and was astounded by the skill levels of Stenson. Watching all the other Europeans etc. he quite simply played the game at a different level and made the rest look ordinary.

Luke Donald commented that it was like watching Tiger at his best. Interestingly, had chats with both Marcel Siem and Steve Webster this week (great guys) - both had clearly been awestruck by Tiger a few years ago as if Tiger really forced them to re-think their games. I'm not sure either would say the same any more. That said, when asked about Stenson one of them just shook his head....
