one thing about Hogan that seems to be overoooked

I have read that Hogan played custom clubs that were bent way flat and were high swing weight. Is it possible to swing like Hogan with modern lies and swing weights? Could even Hogan swing like he did with modern equipment? I assume that the vast majority of guys trying to emulate Hogans swing are doing it with fairly standard lengths/lofts/swing weights. I apologise if this has ben discussd, but it seems like it may be doing more harm than good trying to do with modern clubs what Hogan did with his highly unorthodox custom clubs. Even if you really did know Hogans secret, it probably wouldn't work.

Actually you are correct. I had to modify and simplify Hogan's action because the new ball just goes a lot straighter now and curves (Not talking trouble shots) are minimal now. The ball used to spin very fast thus curving the ball was a given as it was the safest way to control it. Now, couple the low spinning ball with fast face technology and it goes longer and straighter.

A "Tour fade or draw" is not much more than 3 feet not 3 to 5 yards in Hogan's era. The game is much easier now. A player has far less to worry about. As a result, less than tidy swing actions can produce some great shots.

Next big tour event make mental notes with the players attempting big curves and you will quickly discover a very high failure rate.

[/quote]good answer but what are your thoughts on the "custom" clubs he was using. If a person exactly copies his move with a "standard" setup, will he hit hammer hooks??

I have a Maltby book from 1974 that gives specs for clubs from that era. A Titleist 5 iron from '74 was an inch shorter and two degrees flatter than an AP2. I don't know Hogan's personal specs, but I bet the irons were shorter than the 1974 version. I haven't read read anywhere close to all the Hogan threads, but has anyone actually measured his clubs from his peak years? Or is the flatter, heavier clubs another Hogan myth?

It is widely known and accepted that he played with much flatter lies. I'd like to know if anyone here has tried the magical combination of swing and new equipment with heavier, flatter clubs.

Fats made a good point about modern balls and equipment being designed to go straight.

In one book I read about him and snead he used a piece of wood to pound his irons flatter. Most likely a bunch of tinkering to get the lies right.
