Hi Guys

I will be moving to Auckland around the middle of 2014 and am keen to firstly find some courses to play but ultimately somewhere to join as a member. id be keen to hear anyones personal recommendations as ill be moving from a country which literally has not a single course (British Virgin Islands) to some choice, gasp.

My last official handicap was 6.3 in the UK but I currently dont have one due to not qualify to play in tournaments at my current "home" course. if that gives an indication.

Many thanks for your help, I look forward to meeting some wrxrs hopefully. Please feel free to include any other courses near the region as well.

I''m not from Auckland but we go up there for holidays some times. We have reciprocal clubs with North Shore and Remuera, they are great courses. I'm not sure of the member ship fee but they are a bit expensive I think. Another course I have played and like is Akarana. That is a nice golf course to and I think the membership fees are cheaper. I don't know of any others but there is a tonne.

Thanks for the suggestions. We havent yet settled on where we are moving to as yet. Packing up to move to the other side of the world is taking up most of the time and ive got a couple of months when i get there to find somewhere. Im not sure the Missus will understand the criteria of finding a house that is within short range of a course is high on my priorities

Remuera has a nice facility and in a solid residential area. The Grange has a great course but I can't remember if they have a practice facility. Whitford Park is also a nice one to join, slightly older shorter course and away from the crowds. My dad is a member there and I've always played Whitford whenever I visit. Apparently Lydia Ko has been spotted practicing there too.

The thing is to look into is reciprocal arrangements, many clubs have arrangements with others where you can get pseudo member benefits.

If you can drive further out for an occasional round, Muriwai and Gulf Harbor are two courses I really enjoy. Be prepared for wind though.

Some good recommendations here, but I think there's really only 2 contenders in Auckland that I would consider:
1. Titirangi. Tough course but beautiful. Kind of expensive. Definitely too expensive to take guests along as the green fees for guests are too high (IMO).
2. Muriwai. Links course on the West Coast of Auckland. Hosts a pro tournament every year. Fantastic condition year round. Middle of winter gets a little busy as the Auckland (city) based courses get too wet (some even close for a short while) & lots of city golfers head out to Muriwai for a decent round. Never have to clean your shoes after a round, even in winter. Need to be a good player in the wind though, can be really tough when it gets blowing. Annual fees are as low as anywhere in Auckland too, I think the club recognises that members need to travel to get there.

Of course you need to take into account where you will be living, travel time to the course etc but for the quality of the course year round I go with Muriwai (even though it's 50km each way for me).

Good luck with your move.

To be honest the courses in Auckland are generally rubbish, Titirangi is ok but has no practice facilities, Muriwai is good but is always windy, Remuera is a paddock with trees on it!! Where I play (Peninsula) is quarter way through a new course being built, when done it will be the best in town by quite some margin. Fees are pretty reasonable compared to the metropolitan courses too.

December to now
Generally links courses are synonymous with the wind, its what makes them what they are, but no, its not always windy out there. That's part of the challenge of golf, no? I'm sure the new Peninsula will be a nice course, but new does not automatically confer the status of "best". That being said, I look forward to seeing it in a few years when finished.

North Shore Golf Club is probably the best on the North Shore (out of Pupuke, Waitemata etc), plus there is the bonus of it being 27 holes, so not always playing the same 18 every week. Greens are fast and well kept. Fairways are irrigated during the summer so they don't get brown like other courses in Auckland. Will get a little wet during the winter but if you're not reliant on a golf cart, you're going to be sweet. Only really heavy rain will cause the course to be closed.

There is a practice range, but you can't use driver. There is a chipping/pitching/bunker green, plus 2 practice putting greens in front of the club house.

Yea Royal Wellington and Hutt have done a lot to their courses. I'm a member at Miramar and with all the money they have and the membership fees being the second highest in Wellington the course is in piss poor condition, the only 'renovations' they have done is making the walls of some bunkers less step.

It kind of annoys me to see all these clubs doing things to improve their course while we are going backwards.

Been raining constantly so a little bit of wash out, can't quite see in the picture but the first hole can almost be played

Finally arrived and boy isnt it warm after 10 yrs in the Caribbean :swoon:

We are still wating to find out where we will be renting although it is definately the North Shore. Ill take a drive out to look at some of the courses around here when i get a chance such as North Shore and Pupuke.

Ive also realised that my clubs will still be several months away from getting here due to shipping. Is there anywhere anyone would recommend to a) get fitted for a new set of clubs (should be fun subject to broach with the wife) and B) are there any golf superstore type places that I can have a nosy around as well?

Thanks for all the help so far. I look forward to spring coming around and getting back out there.

I finally had my first round at the weekend after my clubs arrived in my shipping. Was nice to get out on the course again and even to carry my bag after a few years of carting. I have become a member of Pupuke as its about 500m from my front door so I can walk to and from it and it seemed logical.

First impressions were good. Seems to have held up after all the rain with just a few soft spots. I can imagine there are some frustrating holes in the summer if it drys out with no fairway watering! I hope their insurance policy is good as there are definately a few blind shots that are prime for taking out someone in the group infront. Pace was good despite being booked out as well although the lack of yardage markers will take a bit of getting used to.

Ill definately set some time aside to vist you Rusty just involves a bit of coordination as I work in Takapuna. Would be good to get fitted as the clubs need new shafts after suffering through salt air and a few months shipping and are in need of some tlc.

Anyone got the scoop on Tara Iti? I stumbled across mention of it today in an old Golf Magazine and it looks amazing, but pretty exclusive. Lots of courses start out that way, and eventually become semi-public or public once they realize they need to make more money.
