Not "recently" but Sewanee is 54 minutes from downtown Chattanooga...I've driven much farther than that to play courses that are substantially inferior to Sewanee. Sewanee is in the range of courses worth traveling 3-4 hours, each way, for me.

Not recently but if you combine it with Sweetens Cove I think that makes a nice 18 or 27 or whatever you want to play. I was advised to play Sweetens in the am and Sewanee in the afternoon as it is typically 8* cooler up on the mountain.

Sewanee is a Hanse re-do and it is a very fun course and very walkable.

I finally got to play Sweetens Cove today. Overall I liked the course. Course was in good shape with bad spots here and there. Greens were probably aerated 2 weeks ago and you could still see sand but didn't effect putts. Greens were over the top. The course reminded me of Tobacco Road. I think the greens at Sweetens are more severe. Not a fan of 2 flags on the greens. Wish there were yardage markers on the sprinkler heads. $50 for 9 holes on a holiday Monday was a little steep for me but $70 for 18 is better. It was a little crowded and slow but I'll definitely go back for 18 or more.

Lot of the same opinions here when i played it last weekend. It was enjoyable, think it would be more fun to get a large group and rent the place out for the day.

Anyone played Black Creek CC lately? I’m a ClubCorp member from Atlanta (with family in Chatt-town) and I’m dying to get up there to play it but was wondering if it’s worth the drive up from Atlanta? I could always just go see my family (in North and East Chattanooga), but I honestly wanna play golf first and then go see them. LOL

Black Creek is one of the better courses in the southeast. Well worth the drive. If you're into golf architecture and interesting designs, then you wont be let down. I think this place only gets passed on because most golfers dont understand the sheer genius of Seth Raynor...as they only deem a golf course to worthy if it looks like Augusta. So Black Creek and other like it kinda have a cult-ish fan base.

I played Sweeten’s (18) and Sewanee (9) yesterday 10/10/2019.

Both courses are in fine shape, though Sewanee just punched the greens and they’re a little sandy. Sweeten’s is in the best shape I’ve seen there.

The courses are comparable for the most part, but I seem to always enjoy Sewanee more. The greens there are challenging but fair and it’s more scenic overall. There are waste areas strewn all over the place and it’s definitely easier to put a golf ball in a spot where you’ll never find it. The fairways are broad but the rough is a death sentence. Tough but fair.

Sweeten’s is quite different. It’s forgiving off the tee and plays very short, but the greens and the collection areas around them are extremely difficult. There are two pins on each green, which limits the number of useful pin placements and puts some pins in positions that require incredible precision. The area around the greens is mown very low (and the greens are running fast enough) so a lot of shots you’re used to playing just aren’t going to be effective. I ended up playing a lot of putting strokes (with both putter and a hybrid) to get the ball to stop on the same tier as the pin. Because the pins are often perched on a bump, a lot of balls are going to run way past. It can wear you down over the round.

If you’re a student of golf and course design and you enjoy really unique different challenges, you’ll have a good time at Sweeten’s Cove. You just have to forget about your score for the day. Treat it as a great match play venue.

If you’re not that kind of golfer, you may come away from Sweeten’s with a hint of disappointment. It gets so many glowing reviews that it’s liable to attract a lot of people who aren’t really into what it offers. Longer hitters are going to find it very short, like driver/wedge short, but they’ll still miss a lot of greens and have way more putts than they expect.

Sometimes a course will offer a very pure experience in the beginning and find that their financial goals aren’t being met, and the course setup will change over time. This happened at Black Creek, actually. The first season or two they had furrowing rakes in all the green side bunkers. The members eventually decided they’d had enough of that. Other harsh aspects of the course have been softened over time as well.

I suspect that Sweeten’s might eventually let a little more grass grow up around the greens, and they could adjust some of the blind sight lines like the structure in the waste area that blocks the view of the fourth green from the tee. These changes would likely make the course better overall, but definitely more likely to attract regular players over one-time players.

I get your meaning. However in this case, the hole would be more exciting without it.

On the par three fourth, the green is something like 75 yards deep. You can have 150 or 200 yards, depending. Any shot to the green has to cover a large waste area, and the green and runoff areas are dramatically sloping, and a ball rarely sits right where it lands.

The structure on the far side of the waste area blocks any view of the green from the tee. You can’t see the intimidating contours of the green. You never see the ball land. It’s *less* dramatic, not more.

Hi Guys - I will be flying down in April with about 12 guys. Our plan is to play 36 at Sweetens on the 24th and 25th (Friday/Saturday). Do you guys think it will be tough to get in 36 on either day? I've also been seeing a lot of praise in here for Sewanee. Should we try and at least get 9 in there as well? We are planning on contacting Sweetens as we get closer to ask about tee times, but I figured I'd ask you all first.

Any help is much appreciated! I can't wait to get down to TN.

Sweetens closes for some tournaments during the Spring on Fridays and Saturdays so definitely check in first. And they also will close if someone rents the place out which is fairly common on those days and during that time.

Sweetens is great but thats a lot of Sweetens. I'd think throwing in Sewanee would be a good idea. There are some other private clubs that are pretty perceptive to a call from a pro if you guys are members at a club up there. (Black Creek, Chattanooga CC, Signal Mountain CC, and Council Fire are worth a conversation).

Respectfully disagree that taking away the blind feature would make 4 better at all. In fact imo it would ruin alot about what makes the hole great in my mind. It's only blind when the hole location is in the front first of all and the blindness add a different element and some variety to the hole based on where the hole is. Any hole in the middle or back the blind feature does not come into play at all. I also think that blind shots are more (and certainly differently) dramatic as the drama extends until you walk far enough to see where your ball ends up rather than knowing where it is after it stops because you can see it off the tee. This variety and ability to play severely differently based on day and hole location is one of the things that make that hole (and SC in general) great to me.

Regardless there is zero chance that this feature ever gets changed. That hole was inspired by and named after a gentleman that was critical to Sweetens Cove being built and that feature (inspired by the Himalayas hole at Prestwick) is the central influence that he had on the course. He has since past away and there is zero chance that it would ever be removed or changed.

Also the firm and fast turf around the greens and elsewhere is very intentional and will only become more consistently firm/fast with time. All of that is an integral part of the design and with the designer and other founders still involved as well as its commercial success relatively assured now by the recent member additions, none of that will be changing anytime soon. Sweetens is a unique place and will continue to be so. It might not be everyone's cup of tea but at this stage it has more than enough fans and now members to keep its unique personality and see plenty of commercial success.

36 seems like a bunch for a 9 hole track. Sewannee is worth it IMO. It is a nice change of pace and in a very cool setting. Gil Hanse re-did the course a few years back and it is a tricky good layout. Only hole I didn't really love was #4. It is a short par four and truthfully I didn't know where to hit it or what to hit. Everything else was A+.

Check google images of the course.

Excellent. Your Saturday options depend on where you're staying. If you're staying close to Sewanee/Sweeten's I'd highly recommend the following:

  • The Bear Trace at Tim's Ford is just down the back of the mountain from Sewanee's campus. It's a nice test, quite scenic and fun. IT would be hard to top from a quality/price standpoint.
  • McLemore is about 40 minutes from Sewanee. While purportedly private, they are allowing outside play on certain days of the week and certain times of day. I get the impression that 4/8 players who had their wallets open could get booked there even on a Saturday. It will be both more scenic and more expensive than Tim's Ford. There are about three holes you'll hate and the rest are really good. Conditions are excellent.
  • Dogwood Hills would be your value option. It's about the same distance from Sweeten's and in the same direction as McLemore. It is inexpensive and a little rough around the edges, and the clientele is about what you'd expect for Sand Mountain, AL. At the same time I always look forward to going there. It's nice and relaxing and there are some really challenging holes esp. on the back nine.

If you're staying closer to Chattanooga...

  • Avoid our munis (Moccasin Bend, Brown Acres and Brainerd). They just aren't that satisfying. If you must, Brainerd is the class of the bunch from a layout and conditioning basis.
  • The Bear Trace at Harrison Bay is great. It's in the opposite direction from the other courses you're playing so it'll mean more driving for your group.
  • Nob North is about 20 minutes down I-75 from Chattanooga. It's a muni but it is quite nice compared to those in Chattanooga. Excellent greens. Somewhat short overall but plenty challenging.
  • If anyone in your group is a member of a Club Corp course, try to get on Black Creek in Tiftonia. It is on the Sweeten's side of the area so it'll be convenient and it's a very nice course. The unaccompanied guest fee is pretty steep at $145 but it's a course that will complement your other stops quite nicely.

Please re-post after your trip. Let us know where your group falls on the Sewanee vs Sweeten's question.

Cool. The pro at Black Creek is Sean Rice and he's a good guy. I take lessons from him so I happen to know he's out of town this week, so don't be discouraged if you don't get a reply right away.

Wow. Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Buddy called and got an all day pass for Sweetens on Thursday.  Looking forward to what used to be the easiest course to get on.   I used to be one of less than 5 golfers there but now darn near impossible unless you plan 6+ months out.

"Nobody goes there anymore.  It is too crowded."

-Yogi Berra (maybe)

I still haven't gotten to actually play there.  The one (two) good opportunity I had was on a work trip to Atlanta about 6 years ago.  Both on my trip down and on my return trip a few days later the course was closed due to being too wet.  I just pulled into the parking lot both times and walked around by the shack and made use of the port-o-jon before getting back on the road.

The rumblings about "this cool course no one had ever heard of" were happening but you could still get on then when it was open.

I'm glad it gets the pub and hopefully it encourages others to build unique and fun courses that aren't always on the beaten path.  Good, fun golf will get found.

Once about five years back I actually drove over from Chattanooga on my lunch break and walked nine as a walk-up. Almost had the place to myself.

Of course, I hadn’t planned to get as sweaty as I did, and I had to go back to my white collar office after. I ended up ducking into the spa at the Chattanoogan and showering on my way back to my desk.

Those were the days.
