I’ll admit, I’ve turned “old man” on my attitude there. I love the course.  Probably played it 30 times.  Used to always hit it up anytime I was working in Atlanta or Chattanooga from Nashville and always could get on with the course to myself.  Maybe another walker or two.  Before they had carts.

it kinda frustrates me now with the attention it gets.  Not the hype but the play and they way it’s run. It’s all selfish of course but I love the place so much I wish I could get on when I wanted to.

Didn't know they had carts.  I don't think they would enhance the round there.  Maybe detract from it.  There is so much to take in visually I would not want to miss it riding.

You don’t have to use them.  I prefer to walk the course but if im playing 27 or 36 im

driving.

Headed to Chattanooga in Oct during the week.  I am a member of a couple courses in GA so have access to a pro calling.

Which courses would be worth trying to get on if I am able to play one time?

Honors is number one. Doubtful anyone can help you get on there though, I would say Chattanooga country club and Black Creek country club

Maybe Lookout Mountain cc

The Honors doesn't allow play without a member IIRC.

The top tier:

  • Black Creek is great. The unaccompanied guest rate is pretty high, around $145. Design influenced by classic old country concepts. I love it.
  • Chattanooga G&CC is very nice. I don't particularly enjoy the layout, but the conditions are always excellent.
  • Council Fire is another good option. Nothing spectacular about the layout but it tests every part of your game. It plays long IMO.
  • McLemore is nice, scenic and accessible to anyone during the week. Had a $30MM renovation last year. The day rate is $150.

The next tier:

  • Lookout Mountain Club is a classic design and the conditions are always excellent. Putting there is a huge challenge...very fast greens that are hard to read properly the first time.
  • Signal Mountain G&CC would be relatively easy to get on. There are about six holes I really like, six more I'm ambivalent about and six that could benefit from a liberal application of explosives.
  • Ooltewah Club is a funky layout that was recently renovated and improved.

What does IIRC mean?

Between black creek and Chatt CC which one would be the best?  And best conditions?

"If I recall correctly"

Black Creek and Chattanooga are both conditioned to a very high standard. The layouts are very different. Chattanooga is more of a Donald Ross-style parkland layout. Black Creek was designed by Brian Silva and is meant to be an homage to classic Scottish hole designs.

A friend just checked into joining Chattanooga and learned there's a three-year waiting list and a $50,000 initiation, so it's really not in the picture for most players. Black Creek is far more reasonable than that.

Chattanooga G&CC enjoys a prominent location in a desirable area of town, and plays along the Tennessee River right across from downtown. Members use the course, sure, but many also treat the club as the center of their social world. They have a gym, a resort-style pool, multiple restaurants, banquet facilities, etc. It's THE club if you're into that.

I drove over to CCC when meeting a customer at the Boathouse for lunch with time to kill.  Every time I eat there I stare that course down and thought I should take a look.   I pulled up and got out of my car and was watching the group come up #9 or #18 along the water near the parking lot.  A guy pulled up to me and asked me to leave the property.  I told him I was just admiring the place and he told me to my make him call the cops.   I was gone.  Wow. Strict place.

I was able to play the front nine at Council Fire yesterday thanks to naws-golfer.  The greens were as advertised.  The conditions were very good, probably too good to pass up.

I was able to ride around Cleveland CC and Dalton CC down in Georgia.  Dalton was in fabulous condition as well and the new layout is really good.  Look for it to win some regional "Best re-design" awards by Golf Digest.  It is really nice.

Are there any courses in the Chattanooga area where my 12yr old could play for free or cheap? I'll be taking him to Top Golf sometime and I thought we might play. I'm coming from Knoxville so Cleveland would be a place too.

The munis have discounted rates for kids. Brainerd is more enjoyable than Brown Acres, IMO.

Thanks for the info. I've played 9 at Brainerd before and have always been curious about Brown Acres

Brown Acres would be good to play with a youngster. It has some good holes but lots of room to miss. Unfortunately the interstate is now 8-lanes wide there and you can barely hear yourself think. Every time I play there I end up hoarse from trying to communicate with my foursome. 🙂

Well….can’t get on Chattanooga Golf club due to city work on water pipes.  Black Creek told my assistant pro that they had a members event (thought that was odd since asked for a Thursday).

reaching out to McLemore Monday / Tuesday to try and get on Thursday morning 10/14.

Can’t see a problem to get on Mclemore if willing to pay. We are renting a house up there 10/26-10/29 and playing a few rounds.  They did tell us no stay and plays available on weekends until spring tho.  No worries here as it’s a work trip.

They have the "Friends of McLemore" program and maintain a spreadsheet on their website that shows the available times. They tend to be early morning or mid-afternoon through the week. Should be easy to find a place to slot in. You have to call the clubhouse to make the reservation and you have to pre-pay for your round (I think it's $150).

Enjoy, it should be in primo condition!

Just a word of caution: this is peak baby copperhead season. I've not seen any at McLemore but there are a lot of places I'd expect to find one. We were on the Cumberland Plateau over the weekend and saw a few laying about on the cart paths.

Just curious, baby copperhead season is important why?  Are they more likely to hang around?  Strike at anything?  After two years of not being in the southern US, I'll have to recondition myself to watching for snakes.  Always like to get more educated on them.

They are more aggressive than the adults and less disciplined. When they bite they’ll always discharge all of their venom where adults will often hold back.

So I posted that a couple of days ago, and completely unrelated to that post, I came across a video of a guy searching for copperheads and cottonmouths.  Was looking up something else, saw a snake video, and you know how that goes....  Anyway, he was saying the stuff you said here was "a myth people believe"....  that the babies can hold back as well.  Not saying he is right and you're wrong, or vice versa, was just funny I came across that.  I had actually forgotten about posting that until I saw you replied.

All I know is baby or adult, as much as I am fascinated by snakes, I'm ok with having a glass between them and myself.
