Titleist Performance Institute: what's your impression/experience?

I heard about the TPI last year, and it certainly sounds intriguing. 100% I agree that each athlete is individual and that there is no one right way to swing a golf club. Just look at 2 big hitters and how different their swings are (Jon Rahm vs Fred Couples). The coach I work with doesn't quite understand my physical limitations, for example. He doesn't have a kinesiology background. 

 

So, what is TPI about? Is it actual golf instruction infused with attacking physical weaknesses? Or geared toward making the golfer better physically so that they can work with their coach (outside of a clinic environment) and achieve their goals on the course?  I have been working with a physio (not TPI) to increase my spinal flexibility: I can attest to the benefits of being more flexible: my driving is up by 20 yards in the past 3 months.   

 

Also, what do instructors/practitioners typically charge?

I have a lot of experience with TPI and I'm a big fan.  The primary component is identifying and improving what you're physical capabilities are......strength, flexibility and mobility.  You'll go through the physical screening and from there they will prescribe a plan to address your areas of weakness.  Some TPI professionals also have technology like the AMM TPI 3-D which maps your body movements during the golf swing.  That allows them to accurately see positions and sequencing.  For the workout plans, in addition to targeted strength and flexibility exercises, they will incorporate exercises to help your movement sequencing. 

 

During my last go around, screening showed tightness in my hips and some lack of lower/upper body separation on 3-D.  They gave me a workout and stretches to free my hips up and they gave me some movement exercises to both improve and properly get a feel for the separation I needed.  I started seeing results in my golf swing within a couple of weeks.  

 

If you take it to the next level you can combine the evaluation with swing instruction.  The basic idea is to help build your swing mechanics around you ability to move.  For example, if your flexibility or range of motion in your shoulders isn't great (i.e. you can't get a lot of external or internal shoulder rotation) they may address your swing plane......instead of fighting your body to swing upright like a Justin Thomas, it's going to be easier to swing more around your body like a Jon Rahm.
