VERY preliminary iron comparison...

checked out some models for future purchase this year
I went with a family member to Golfer's Warehouse here in MA to pick up a travel cover for me bag of implements of destruction, and pick out a few pairs of polos and shorts... and just happened to take the oportunity to to a visual comparison of some iron models that I will be considering for a fitting/purchase later on this year... so far, based on expectations ( I know, I know, expectations are bad ) that the new (and MUCH improved!) mechanics and ball striking will continue, I am strongly considering trying a set of players or "wanna-be" player's cavity backs. No blades. Not for a while, at least.

Most pleasing to my eye in the playing position so far (no particular order):

Titleist 704cb
Titleist 735cm (reach, in terms of ability)
Taylor Made Rac LT's
Ping I3+ Blade
Ping I5 (this was actually second to the I3+ Blade, for some reason)
Mizuno MP 60
Mizuno MX 17.

Others will certainly be added!

Again, these were the models that I was able to do a VISUAL comparison of in the playing position. Any comparisons that could be made by users would be appreciated. If you would be so kind, please let me know
what kind of ball flight you found with the irons (that you chose to purchase), shaft choice, swing tempo, etc... especially the ball flight that you were looking for and why the other irons you may have tested didn't stack up...

I'm trying to build for myself a little data base for future reference when I can get on a launch monitor with my teacher while doing a thorough fitting evaluation.

Thanks so much! :)

I have had the MX-17 ,MX-23 and now the 735 CM's. You cannot hit a bad shot with the MX-17. They're very forgiving, very long (strong lofts), but they feel very harsh (cast irons). The MX-23's feel very soft, are forgiving and are very long (strong lofts). But I didn't like the accuracy of both the MX-17 and 23. Mx-17 was graphite shaft and MX-23 was Rifle Flighted 5.5. With my new 735cm's I need a really good stroke because they aren't forgiving but they are feeling good (chrome finish), and they are so accurate. Recently almost holed out an hole in one. For me when I have a bad day I have some problems with the 735cm but on a good day they so much help my game. i would highly recommend them. Of the others you mentioned I would also prefer the MP-60, a little little bit more forgiving and softer. But as you see I'm a Titleist ho...

I have owned and really love the MX-23's and the MX-17's, both are excellent irons IMO. I agree with Markus1 that the feel of these two is significantly different but I enjoy both, the 23's are very soft while the 17's are very firm and solid (similar sensation IMO to Ping ISI's that I played for a few years). I recently put my 23's into play and coupled with the Nippon 950 shaft they are iron perfection for me, but if I couldn't play the 23's, or my game goes completely haywire, I would gladly acquire another set of 17's (with Nippon shafts) and be content. The 17's are easily my favorite OEM cast cavity back and they are supremely easy to hit well, especially the long irons, they're incredibly stable feeling when hit anywhere on the grooves and I think their aesthetics are very simple and classy.
