New Member from Chicago

Just joined the forum. Getting the itch up here in Chicago but still a long way to go before it's golf season. I just picked up golf a few years ago to screw around in scrambles and company outings and stuff, but now I'm hooked. Last year I committed to try and start figuring out how to play this game, so I figured this would be a good place to be stomping around to to try and pick something up that might help me along the way. I'm currently a 17 handicap, having started at over a 40. I'm from the Chicago western suburbs, 29 years old, and a mechanical engineer.

 

I've taken about 10 lessons, which were worthless. We covered too much too fast and gave me the same drills that are in Golf Magazine, except for 100x the cost of the annual subscription. Did the GolfTec thing and I won't go back there. Too much salesmenship and not enough golf instruction.

 

That all being said, I am basically self taught and probably played under 100 rounds in my life. I score better than it looks on the course. I'm long and inconsistent, at times wild, but have a very good short game. I played over 30 rounds last year, which was the most I've ever played in a season, and ended the year at a 17 handicap. I nearly broke 80 several times, but I also nearly broke 100 equally as many. The disparity in my game off the tee vs my short game is astromonical - several times I shot in the mid-80s while missing nearly every FW and GIR on the course. I've seen my swing on video a million times and I can easily point out what I'm visually doing wrong, but I don't know the cause is, fixes, or what doing it the right way feels like. I've read a handful of books and watch videos and lessons on the internet all the time in hopes that one day, one person will just happen to articulate the swing the right way and it'll click for me. Until then, I feel like I'm just further engraining bad habits.

 

 

 

Summing Up My Game:

 

Everyhing is in play when I'm on the tee, including homes, lakes, highways, and forests. I am hazardous on the course with anything more than a 7 iron. Seek shelter and hide near the flagstick or lay in the center of the fairway. My swing is a dumpster fire. I should ride in a golf cart painted as an ambulance as I try to save shots and revive my game. My short game is the defibrilltor.
