Ever been a marshall at a pro tourney?

Would love to hear your experiences

Me and a mate have recently been selected (out of a group of 1000) to be marshalls at the upcoming Australian Open in November. I have never had anything to do with a tournament before and would like to know what to expect. Doesn't matter if you marshalled in a PGA, LPGA, Nationwide, European etc i'd just like to hear your experiences.

Plus the Shark is gonna be in the field! It'd be great to see him take on Ogilvy, Scott, Appleby and the like! I'll try and get some pics if i get the opportunity.

It's gonna be a great opportunity to check out the pros in the flesh. The power these guys hit their balls with doesn't come close on TV!

 

I've been with the Linde German Masters for three years running (not this year though) and have my application already filled out for next year's Mercedes Benz Championship. Maybe Tiger will come too :drinks:

 

Us on the European Tour are quite lucky as we get everything for free. On the US tour they have to pay for their equipment (up to $100 so I've heard). We get free parking, free access, free lunch, free one-time greenfee after the tournament, free equipment (2 polos, 1 rainjacket, 1 cold weather garment), so basically everything free....

I had the pleasure of being one at the Masters in 97,98,99 and 2001. You stand on the same hole all day everyday but the perk of getting to go back May 24th and play 18 holes with a cart one time for free and playing the par 3 course all you can until dark is the best perk in golf I think besides being a tour pro. :drinks:

I know the waiting list is crazy long, but how do you sign up to volunteer at the Masters?

I was a marshall (greenside at a par 3) at an LPGA event in 1999 - great experience! The crowds aren't as large as at a PGA event but ya' still gotta keep the crowd quiet. :cheesy:

 

At the same event, I was a walking scorer for the Pro-Am and then for The Golf Channel during tournament play. I knew the course better than the pro & her caddie and all the amateurs so that was fun... the pro actually asked me things, the guys never did. :drinks:

 

For The Golf Channel, we were assigned foursomes and when they finished we got sent back out to certain holes to pick up other groups - that was a very busy day (thankfully the course wasn't too hilly!)

 

And, I got asked to fill in as a hole monitor/timer when someone did show up for their shift. Learned that the timing starts when a group pulls the flagstick and ends when they put it back.

 

My last stint was as a player/caddie shuttle driver at this year's US Women's Open... priceless!

i was a standard bearer for the US Open at Olympia Fields.

 

got to carry the sign for Luke List and JB Holmes during a practice round, both were still in college

 

biggest perk was free entrance even on days you didnt work along with free shirts and hats

 

i dont know if they still do this but when i volunteered they had an unlimited supply of krispy kreme's all day every day
