Why do these guys go so low?

This is a question that I've had since I saw Calc set some records and learned that he has a propensity for getting hot.

I'm sure that the more experienced players here know of guys who are good (not great), but have the ability to go super low. The player who, when he gets hot, he gets REALLY hot, and it isn't a one-off thing. It's not quite a regular occurrence, but it's something that this player does enough that he/she is known for it.

What is it that these players have in common with each other that makes them different from the average player, and different from the regular top-tier player (or even the HOFer), both mentally and game-wise?

Sub 65 rounds for the type of player who does it are usually a combination of two things: hitting a lot of iron shots close that day and making a bunch of putts.

These guys always drive it in play, always have decent short games, and always are good lag putters and good putters inside ten feet. The reason for this is that these are the skills to a basic degree you have to have to be a sub scratch player.

So when you always drive it well and always get it in the hole well you usually don't have a lot of blow up holes, you make your birdies on the par 5s, and on an average day you shoot 69-73 (for this type of player). So the difference in the low rounds is you hit a bunch of iron shots inside 10 feet where your make percentage is really high, or you hit your irons like you always do and start filling it up from 15-25 feet.

So that's the general idea.
