ovaling question/Ozik HD6

my local clubmaker spec'd out a few of my drivers that i will test during the offseason; interestingly, he said that my TM TP Superfast w/Matrix Ozik HD6 was ovaling quite a bit when he was running the specs, more like a shaft from 7 years ago might do; he said that if i have a consistent swing, it probably won't hurt me, but that i could see some inconsistency in shot direction because the shaft was ovaling so much...i was just hoping to get some feedback from some of the online experts here...is the Ozik HD6 known for this problem? i believe this is the stock ozik hd6 that comes with the superfast tp head, so is this a "made-for" shaft issue? he also spec'd out two other drivers for me, one with a Mitsubishi Hawk and another with a tour issue Ozik X-Con 5 and neither of those had the ovaling concerns that the HD6 had. thanks for any insight!

Ovaling? Is he somehow measuring cross-sectional deformation of the shaft or is he describing an oval pattern when the club is twanged in a clamp? If the latter be sure he removed the grip or clamped below it before twanging. HD6 should be pretty consistent.

i believe he was describing an oval pattern when testing for cpm; and i'm pretty sure he removed the grip on all the drivers tested since he changed all the grips out; he said the ovaling was oddly pronounced on the HD6 (something he said was much more rare nowadays when he tests clubs), but nice and tight with the Mitsu Hawk and Ozik X-Con 5; should i consider yanking this HD6 out and replacing with another shaft, or is this a minor concern? thanks for your help.

I'd suggest pulling the shaft and aligning it for FLO, then reinstalling. some variation is ok but if your xlubmaker detects big spine I'd suggest it was a warranty deal and he should contact Matrix or TMAG

thanks awalkspoiled...do you think i perhaps got a rare shaft "lemon"? in my initial testing, i was hitting this driver longer than the others, but i can't really afford for it to sometimes drift way offline because of the ovaling issue!

I doubt TaylorMade will "warranty" a club just because the shaft isn't spine aligned, but if they will more power to you. It would probably be easier to just have your club builder pull the shaft, find the spine, and reinstall it.

gotcha - familiar with Bassara name, not Hawk - just not a mitsu guy

By getting this shaft corrected for FLO, it would drive more consistency into the club as a whole.
The goal is to tighten the pattern of contact marks.
The ovaling causes inconsistencies, resulting in toe hits as well as heal hits (a large inconsistent pattern).
The alignment should titghten the pattern on the face - resulting in improved contact and a more consistent ball flight.

The only real way to tell if it's a problem is to pull and check for inconsistent frquencies. Once you've done that you might as well reinstall with good alignment. The fact that it's working well is a good sign. Flo is about a third or fourth-order parameter. Other features are much more important most of the time. A good clubmaker will do flo, but it's mostly just professional thoroughness, it won't make a good shaft out of a bad one or vice cersa
