My freshamn year i really wansnt that good and got a bunch of Sh** for playing really bad clubs like the whole box set. I still do even though i have decent sticks now. I think its a load of bs what some kids give other kids just for the equipment they use. Ive improved drastically and Should be playing a lot more matches then last year. Even you guys encouraged me to keep the irons i have now even though i may have bad days with them there still amazing irons

Its not as if an i5 is a SGI iron....geez! Several tops pros play a mid-cavity back. Next time one of these bozos say something stupid about your clubs, ask them if they ever watch the Golf Channel? Most of the guys in the top 25 in the world play cavity backs or at least a mixed set.

Like everyone else said, use this as motivation.

I know everyone is being really positive to your quest to play the I5's, which I am largely unfamiliar. I played high school golf with Tommy Armour 845's, but learned on an old set of top flight blades. I played the blades during the summer but the 845's in fall and spring. Helped keep my ball striking sharp, and allowed me to work on shot shaping as well. If you have never played a blade you should at least consider it for your developement as your teamates had said. I was top 2 on my team as frosh and won the first tourney we played. Even today if my swing doesnt feel quite right I go back to the blades for a couple rounds and get my feel back. I felt going into college and playing that I wasn't developing enough and switched back to thinner cavity backed blades Burner tour I think. The transition was tough but I was able to throw up lower scores than before although not as consistent. I've never been able to hit the trouble shots as well with the thicker cavities. The high cut, low draw, high draw, low cut shots you need to get from bogie to birdie. Can you hit a wide open 7 iron around a tree from 100 yards with the i5's? Just something to consider... I support playing the i5's for now but suggest making a transition sometime in the future so you can get better.

Wow it was great to see how this played out for you! The sad thing is, knowing highschool kids (and even people who are supposed to be much more mature) if you work hard enough to make it to the number 1 spot, then they'll probably flip their story around and say you only have that spot because your cavity backs make the shots easier for you. But just remember, in life there are some games you'll never win, and aren't worth the time wasted trying to.

Wow, I didnt expect this thread to get such positive responses! Anyways I see some people want a update so here goes. Ive had 1 match and a invitational tournament. In the match it was 9 holes and I played as the #2 man. I shot 38 to finish in the 4th spot between both teams. Our team captain shot 35 for 2nd place. Then we had the 18 hole invitational of 20 teams. I got off to a bad start hitting my drive WAY left into OB. I shot 40 on the front nine and at the turn at the snack shack place, I ran into our captain and 3rd man, who joked and said "Oh is the #2 spot getting a little to much to handle now" I asked how they were doing but they didnt respond. They are such jerks, but I keep my cool with them and am very nice even though they treat me like crap.

Anyways I got my stuff together on the back and shot 1 under 34 for a total of 74. I finished in 4th place to get my first medal in high school! I was very excited. My coach, 4th,5th,6th guys were all happy for me and congratulated me but #1,#2 didnt say a word. They finished 15th and 27th with captain shooting 82 and #3 shooting 88. My dad is so excited for me, he wont stop telling me how proud he is. It means alot to me as we have had a tough time of late with my mom passing away within the last year. Its something to get excited about together.

My coach said he is keeping the team spots as is for the year as he knows our capabilities and he's happy where we are at. So I will stay at #2. Anyways I want to thank everyone for their kind words and encouragement. It really means alot! Hope evryones season goes well!!

I had my first meeting with my high school golf team the other day, and as a Freshman I didnt know what to expect. When I got there at the range, I thought Id definetely be the worst player there. All the returning kids shoot low to mid 70's. I usually average a 78 for 18 holes. I noticed every kid on the team played some type of forged muscleback blade iron. I have been playing Ping i5's for a while now and they do OK for me.

I was talking to the captain(a senior) who is going to play D1 college golf next year, and he asked if I was trying to earn a college scholarship and when I told him that I would like to he basically laughed in my face. He said that I would never develop a good enough swing using those "shovels" as he called them. At first I ignored it but then other kids told me the same thing. I even had the coach ask me why I felt the need to play a club that is more about forgiveness. He asked if I lacked ambition to practice?

I am very dissapointed as I couldnt wait to start with these guys as I just moved here and couldnt tryout for the team at the beginning of the year, but now Im not sure if I even want to go back. I talked to my dad and although he doesnt play golf, he told me that if its important to me he would try his best to get me some new irons. I appreciate it very much, but is it necessary? Is the team right? Will I always have to rely on a forgiving club as I wont know how good I strike the ball? Will my swing get sloppy as I wont need to strike the ball well to get a good shot, as they said? Please help! Also should I go back or just wait till next year?

I see Sergio has decided he lacks ambition to practise!

Hey bud dont worry about. I am junior on my highschool team, and a few seniors have blades because they want to be the only ones who can hit them and what not. Well this kid was talking crap about how I could not hit his blades compared to my r7's, so then I then take out his 3i and hit it straighter and further then he has been doing the whole time. Its not the equipment its the player..

I am a freshman in high school and hope to play high school golf this year, and I have had callaway big bertha's with graphite shafts (regular) and people on my summer team at my club asked me why I had such beginners clubs, and I kicked their asses in matches and laughed at them. Now I got ping s57's ordered once my swing got better but definetely use the i5's if they work.
