Other than Torrey Pines and La Costa, what are the best courses in the San Diego area?

Definitely play Barona. I live about 10 minutes away, and my head pro gets us out there all the time. Great course, and still not that expensive.

This is a broker that i used to get on Aviara ( which i highly recommend, great course.)

 

Barona is nice also.

Dont forget Steele Canyon (G.Player designed) is nice, Mt Woodson is target golf at its best, Sycuan has 2 18 hole tracks, Coronado GC is very nice if you can get on...PM me, I live here.... ;)

What are your thoughts on Rancho Bernardo and Redhawk?

Is Torrey Pines really worth playing, or is it over hyped just becuase it is a Tour course.....though It would be sweet each year to say, "I've had that putt" or "Ive been in those trees" each February during the Buick....or of course the 2008 US Open.

i play it almost once a week and live here in san diego and I still at a loss for words at the views..and the sunsets that i see at Torrey every week.

 

The only downside to Torrey is if you get a day when its really busy your round can take 5hrs........and make sure you check to see if the greens were punched recently.....other than that make sure you have s strong wrist and eagle eyes if they have not cut the rough in a week.......bring plenty of balls if its your first time playing becuase the rough will goble them up like candy.

I believe they are all public and can be played. Or at least a resort course that can be accessed.

 

Torrey is tough to get on without a broker, i used the one i had a link to in a previous post in this topic.

I used them for Aviara as well.

La Costa....way overrated! Average layout.

Torrey Pines......just ok due to pace of play and high green fees for non-San Diego residents

 

I recommend and play often:

 

Encinitas Ranch.....just a couple miles south of La Costa

Aviara.....nice layout, but high resort fees

Maderas....simply awesome

Arrowood.....new course with fun and challenging layout

 

My favorite is Talega Golf Club in San Clemente in south Orange County.

About 1 hr drive north of downtown San Diego. Fred Couples designed.

I live right down the street from Maderas and was lucky enough to get to play it 5 times a week for HS golf, its an amazing course. Rancho Bernardo Inn is nice but is a little beat up right now. Twin Oaks is a great course i think along with Encinitas Ranch. I go play Cottonwood every week cause its cheap and usually in decent shape. I got to play Ranch Santa Fe CC once and it was awesome, beautiful course. I play a lot at Oaks North also when i wanna play a quick round and work on my iron play. I would look into getting a JC player card from www.jcgolf.com its a great investment.

Man would it have been nice to play these courses....about a week before my trip I broke my wrist so did no get to go....too bad.

Rancho Bernardo is over-rated and is no more than an "up-scale" muni. Redhawk was great until all the homes were constructed. There is a cool island green par-3 there with generous first cut unlike TPC at Sawgrass. Upper-end: Aviara, Mid-level: Maderas, Torrey Pines South, etc. and low-end: Encinitas Ranch.
